I love this thread, My SIL and I went last week and took her 10 year old son with us. Needless to say he was more than thrilled to get in the Recycling Bin. i will have to show her this so we know for later. We got quite a few good stacks.

I don't know about yours but you should check your library, mine has a rubbermaid type bin that people just put coupons in it, and anyone can go look through it!

I SO wish I knew where the recycling center was around here! We have recycling day every Monday, so I just have to figure out where the stuff goes post-truck...and I live in a small town, so there aren't any good dumpsters behind stores to go diving in. eh. I guess until I figure it out, I'll just keep looking on with envy

Dumpster Diving - What does that mean??

The definition for Dumpster Diving is to pretty much riffle through the trash looking for goodies.:)

In the couponing world we are usually referring to looking though recycling bins looking for Sunday newspapers and their coupon inserts. As one of the main keys to stockpile couponing is to obtain multiple coupons!.

What tools should I carry to successfully dumpster dive?

Here is what is included in my dumpster diving tool kit:

1. Step stool:

If you are short you may need one. I am not short at 6 ft tall but I still use a step stool to give me added reach.

2. Something to help you grab your newspapers:
Such as...

A short handled 3-pronged garden cultivator (either long or short handled... I prefer the long handled version myself)

3. To help you collect your newspapers it is a good idea to have on hand a way to corral the newspapers... I use an old milk crate, but you can also use a cardboard box, or even some twine.

4. Not necessities but also nice to have on hand:

Something for your hands,.baby wipes as handling newspaper can be quite messy!

During the summer those metal recycling bins can get QUITE hot so I like to include an old towel to toss over the edge of the bin to prevent "recycling bin burns"

Last but not least...if your children don't mind...toss a kid in the dumpster! Throw them in and let them help you get to those papers that are just out of reach. Some kids find it fun and exhilarating (my 8 year old begs to be thrown in the bin) while other kids find it terrifying (my BF's DD thinks you are throwing her away LOL)

You may also want to add these to your kit.

Gloves (like you all need a picture LOL)

Head Lamp

Grabby thingy (I used to have one when I was PG with the twins but using it Dumpster diving it broke..was ok for grabbing small amounts but not a lot all at once)

All in all have fun dumpster diving. Don't forget to be carefull and watch for items that could harm you. There are many treasures to be had in those dumpsters but its not worth it if you are hurt.
--------------------------------------------------

I have not read every message on all 51 pages, so hopefully this is not a repeat. Before joining here, someone elsewhere asked a question about all the different ways to get coupons. Dumpster diving was one of them. It seems that the people doing the diving were, and this is true, two ladies on their lunch hour, in high heels. They had to take them off before "diving". And the way they explained it, they had none of the items pictured above except the dumpster and the coupons if they found any.
The stool, rake, and grabber would have been handy.

As far as the post office, not many coupons go in there. Some people get the Sunday paper in the post office box but it is rare. All we get around here in the post office trash would be grocery ads.

However, I did find a coupon one time. I think it was Victoria Secret and good for a free pair of ladies undies.
Well, me being a single male, this was some coupon find. Looking to save on my food bill and end up with .........!

I didn't want anyone to see me with it, so I hid it and went home and traded for pphf as fast as I could. And that pphf went straight to my food bill. I could have used that "redeemed" coupon as a gift but decided not to.

Do you ask for permission first before you go poking in a dumpster of a buisness? What is the proper way to go about doing this? It sounds like it would be a fun adventure....Maybe I can talk me DH into helping me -I'm 5'2 and he's 6'2 --How can I ask him without him thinking I've gone off my rocker?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE our recycle center here. They have 8 large dumpsters designated for paper only (there are seperate ones for cardboard, plastic, ect) I talked to one of the employees who helped me look for inserts and brought me a grabber and she told me the schedule when they empty the bins, M W F so I try to go on Tues, Thurs, and weekends when the bins are almost all full. That way I dont have to "dive" in too much but they do have little things on the side I can climb up on if I need to.

I don't buy newspapers anymore and get tons of inserts (too bad we dont get alot of the high value ones) I also get the flaps off of Coke boxes for the cokepoints which I use to purchase $50 gc from resturant.com and subway so free date night with my man!

The only bad thing is I do tend to go late at night and carry pepper spray, and park really close. It is on a busy street and kept lit up at the facility at night but my dad was chased by a man one night, beaten and had a gun held to his head but the guy just took off. Her was there at maybe 4or5am dropping off papers for USA Today and tho I know it was probably a one off situation I am always guarded because of this. So you may want to add something for protection as well because these days you never know even in broad daylight.

I've wondered what retailers do with their papers at the end of the day. Does the newspaper company pick the extras back up to dispose or do they do their own? If so, the gas station employees where I buy my paper are super nice. I'd think maybe they'd let me rifle through.

Currently I take advantage of an offer here in Des Moines that Kum and Go offers: if you buy gas, you get a free paper. I get some gas at a few different places with each of our two cars and then have plenty of copies. Some people would think this is cheap but I know I can write this here. You get it. LOL. <3

I don't think I'd physically dive into a gigantic recycling bin: I'm too much of a klutz and who knows what would ensue. But I'd rifle through something smaller for sure!
