If you know when they pick-up day is, go the day prior, as people are most likely to get rid of everything then.

Yea it is kind of hit and miss for me as well. I am not sure what the pick up date is, so sometime I go and it is empty and other times it is full. I just hope for the best and keep going back.

Never dumpster dived before either. When I worked the night shift, after my shift, I would stop by local quickymart (after asking) some clerks didn't mind me taking just the SunIns before the un sold Sunday papers where picked up. Other would say no . Wish I knew where to go dumpster diving in SoCal LOL
although DH would definately hit the roof with this idea LOL

Tragedy! The Boy Scout recycle drop off that I get all my inserts from is closing. Apparently they are not making any money from it, so they will no longer be doing it. Guess I'll have to find another source, but this totally stinks! Anyone have any tips on how to go about finding out at a recycle center (we have one about 16 miles away) if I can rummage through their stuff?

Today I found that our free local newspaper (delivered free to every house and business) has a copy of the SmartSource with the $4 Glade coupon.... now I am on a mission to find 3 more so I can max out my CVS deal. I am so tempted to just walk around the neighborhood and grab them off the street... I know I shouldn't but hey they are free anyway right?

eta: and the reason this is in the Dumpster Diving thread is because the one I found was from the garbage can at work where my boss threw it.

I'm tempted to do some dumpster diving for the Marcal toilet paper coupons. I am in love with this TP. LOL. My question is, the unsold papers, do they just throw them in the trash? I know my husband loves to see my face when I find a great deal, I just know he would flip if I told him about dumpster diving.

The local paper here has a contract with it's vendors that those papers that are not sold are to be thrown out, WITHOUT THE FRONT COVER. Kind of like imperfect clothes that have the tags torn out of them.

For me then, it is easy to spot a good 'pile' when I find it

Around here, the paper picks up any unsold Sunday papers on Saturday evening prior to the new one coming out. The stores are reimbursed for unsold papers and the papers are recycled through the newspaper company.
I made a deal with the store manager of the Food Lion near me- he allows me to come in on Saturday afternoon and get any inserts out of the ones that are left (and going to be picked up) since it doesn't matter if they have inserts or not- it doesn't affect their reimbursement.

I used to go dumpster diving and I would go every week. I knew which recycling dumpsters the newspaper vendors dumped their Sunday papers and when. I would come out with bundles still strapped together! I mean 20 bundles! I had an older Chevy Blazer and I'd back the vehicle up to the dumpster, open the glass, and the tailgate and use the tailgate to get inside the dumpster. *yes I always had either my son or a friend with me* I'm only 5'0" so this was fairly easy for me to do. I would only climb in though if the dumpster was 2/3 full or less. One funny incident was when a friend of mine was with me and we were at the dumpster in Kroger parking lot. It was dark out and I was inside the dumpster, handing her papers out of the little square hole in the side. Well, she had walked to the car to put some stuff in and I heard nothing but a large tractor trailer type truck stop there at the dumpster. I was thinking "oh no!! they're going to empty this and I'm in it!" so I called for my friend and got no response, so I peered out the little square hole and luckily it was the Kroger truck that had stopped and was letting traffice clear on the main highway before pulling out. BUT there was a car driving towards the direction I was facing with my face sticking out that hole..and the people were just pointing. I think after about 5 more minutes we finally left! lol It was kind of funny though.
