My question is ..... where do you go to DD? I would love to find my own source!!
I prefer curb picking to dumpster diving. But I'm not adverse to dumpster diving to DH's horror. Although he is getting into me yelling stop when I see something cool from the car.
Dumpster diving go to apartment complexes and check out what's on the outside is usually better.

I was at the church recycle center and I hadn't been very successful (Just a handful of inserts that day), this little old lady came in with her papers as I was leaving and she looked at me kind of funny so I said "I forgot to get my coupons from my paper", then I helped her get her papers from her trunk and take them in - I really wanted to go through hers too but I just left - LOL

I am by far no expert on law here, but I *think* on "personal" garbage, once it's at the road, it is considered public property and therefore not stealing.
I don't know if there are any laws about actual dumpters. But it would make sense if it was Not illegal, if for "personal" garbage it isn't.
That's why they say shred you bills, etc. because it is legal for the ID thieves to rummage through your garbage.
I don't dumpter dive, at least yet, but if I did I would just stay away from any dumpters that might have a no trespassing type sign or something.
Any others I'd consider fair game.
How any of this would apply to Recycling as opposed to actual Garbage, I have no idea.
I have CDO. It's like OCD, but in alphabetical order, as it should be.
I'm lucky - our county has HUGE recycling bins set up throughout the county. 2 are within 3 miles of my house, a 3rd is a little bit further BUT right on the way to my mom's on Sunday morning ;)
Only problem is, we live in an area that recycles like no other!!! And, now that the weather is getting nice there are ALWAYS people recycling. I'm still trying to figure out a good time to go when no one will be around. I went yeserday around 8:00a.m. thinking I would be a lone. H*** no!! Tons of people there - so annoyed, LOL. Went today at 6:30a.m. and no one was around, BUT I found NOTHING :( Arrrgghh. It's getting annoying...
I once was caught by some woman dumping across from me - and I'm currently looking for a FT teaching job so I'm always afraid I'm going to walk into an interview....and see someone that saw me, LOL...
As far as cops go, DH is one so I know all the city, county, and state guys. I think DH already told them what I do to save $$...

Here in my city, once its on the curb, it becomes CITY property, and on the books, it is actually against the law to take something from someone else's curb. The Chief of Police told me that as far as he can remember, nobody has ever been convicted or fined for trash-picking. OTOH, my garbage man has NO problem tearing open everyone's bags and placing a few choice items up in the front of his truck. Its so annoying. An hour spent picking up garbage on my street, wasting tax dollars (ie; STEALING from the citizens), just so he can trash pick on the job.
Queenofthehivemomof5 have you been talking to my Granny; because your decribing my childhood down to the "T" even thowing the kid in the dumpster(ME)LOL :) She did'nt need a gripper she had us.:)She even started a neighborhood recycling program in the 80s way before the city started just to get the papers and cans. We would go around in our van and pick it up and go through the stuff then take it to the recycling center.
Give these folks a hand... dumpster diving should be an Olympic Event..come on diving is.... why not the DUMPSTER version!
