I've been dumpster diving 30+ years, my mom would take me when I was little.
My most recent story was from this weekend. There was an older man at the dumpsters when I arrived Sunday night. When I looked into the dumpster (which was about 6 feet tall & almost empty) I saw some really old stuff someone had thrown out.....there was also a ladder standing up inside the dumpster. I asked if was his & when he said it was, I asked if I could use it.
After I got my stuff out of the dumpster we started talking. He told me he always carries a ladder with him. He said once he jumped in & every time he tried to jump out his leg FELL OFF. Come to find out he was an amputee. He said he had to stay in the dumpster until some woman came along & he had her throw bags of trash in from another dumpster until there was a mound high enough so he could climb out.
What a funny story!

you guys are too funny.. I can not bring myselfe to do this, I don't even look at my own trash on the driveway, scared that my neighbores think I'm wired..lol.. I'm so proud of everyone that can do this :-)
I've been dumpster divin since I was 8 and found an AWESOME used slipnslide on the side of the road along with one of those barbie heads you put the make up on! ;) haha! Some people's trash is our treasures! haha!
I say that if the trash is out, its for the grabbin!
Thursday my sister and I went dumpster diving at one of the bins I have been going to for a year and a half...what was there? Four bundles of Sunday papers...40 papers!!! I have never found a whole bundle before, we were embarrassingly excited.
People at my recycle center are super nice when you need boxes they will even go inside the recycle center and get you out the good ones. I needed newspapers for a girlscout craft (I needed a BUNCH) the ones out front had gotten wet, so they brought me out a trunk full of nice dry ones. I guess it all depends on where you are. I am at Ft. Sill, so a military post my treat you kinder than a civilian recyling center. We do not have a recycling center off post at all. I have to drive on post to deliver my stuff that needs recycling (no curb side pick up in our town!) Also dumpster diving is perfectly legal. One time I got a WHOLE case of unopended decorative lights that the PX was throwing out. I was looking for boxes!!! But the box just happened to be full!
