Default Do you ask to dumpster dive?

I found a couple of recycling centers in my general area. I was wondering how many of you that DD, ask for permission first, and if any really OK it? I figured if I ask, they will probably say "No".

I never asked. The dumpsters in my area are on public property and intended for use by the entire community since we have no curbside recycling here. I put my things for recycling in and then take the inserts out. There aren't any signs saying I can't and I've never encountered anyone who had a problem with it.

But if you have actual recycling centers in your area that aren't accessible to the general public or are manned by workers, then I would definitely ask for permission first. It might not be allowed by the center or it may be illegal altogether by local ordinance.

How do you go about finding where these public dumpsters are? Are they marked specifically for newspapers?

Try using the link in this thread:

    http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums...-near-you.html

In my case, it's seriously outdated as some of them have since been moved or removed completely. But it should at least give you an idea about whether they exist near you and where they might be.

You can also try contacting your public works department to see if they have any info to give you-- namely if it's legal.

If you have curbside recycling that then gets transferred to a facility, the chances you'd have public dumpsters is slim.

This makes perfect sense but doesn't seem to be true in my area. The city offers curbside recycling yet there are tons of paper-only bins at many of the churches and schools. They use them as fundraisers and they are usually full.

Even though the list from earth911 might be outdated, you can use google maps to scan the parking lot to see if the bins are there. Hey, no sense in wasting gas if you can cruise the street from home!

I haven't asked permission and so far nobody has told me I can't fish out coupons and since I buy newspapers they go into the same bin so I'm leaving more than I take. If I ever get questioned I'll tell them that the old papers have expired coupons and I'm sending them to the military bases overseas which is true. It doesn't take very long to collect a stack of expireds and it's good for the soul to send them on.

The big difference being what you just said-- the churches and schools use them as fundraisers. Those are not public dumpsters that are provided by the city/county because there's no curbside recycling offered in the area.

How about ones in store parking lots? Is that considered private property?
    Thanks!

They aren't considered private property in my area. The parking lots are designated drop off areas because they are convenient to the public.
