I've never heard of such a thing. Though I have no idea what they do with extra inserts either. But burning seems like a bit much...
I recently called the Houston (Texas) Chronicle Customer Service line and during our conversation the lady I was talking to told me all extra coupon inserts are burned. I told her I could not believe that and she swore it was true.
Anybody know for a fact it is or isn't true? Does anyone know what happens to those inserts in unsold papers, etc.?

Burning is illegal in a lot of states so i doubt it. I bet they recycle it though.
Our paper recycles them
My guess would be that they shred and then recycle them.
When I told her I didn't believe they burned them she was very vehement about saying they did! Whatever!

The term BURN here dose not actually mean BURN, its more of a distroy, we mulched paper and it was refered to as burning...( who is doing the burn run this week?)
so to say burn they mearly mean distory..
many stores purchase old papers to wrap product in, here we have a pottery place and they purchase old papers and i see the inserts and coupons tossed aside, as they are usually too small to cover the product with..
most of the time the manufacturer requires distruction of their non- sold (handed out ) ect coupns..
I did instore hands out s years ago and we would have to sign a statement saying we distroyed remaining coupons....
