Default Soft rice crispy treats * what's the trick?*

    Soft rice crispy treats,
I have made them in the past but everyone seems to be partial to the ones pre wrapped they seem so moist and chewy I agree they are yummy but the budget is pressing really hard and I can only splurge on these once in a while, I think it would be much more fun to be able to make them together and enjoy them for much less than the pre packaged ones.

What are the secrets to soft treats?

I had them come out ok but most times they are alittle to crunchy I use the recipe off the kelloggs box so I thought it would be fool proof but am I cooking the marshmellows and butter too long not stirring it fast enough, I dunno why they come out a little to hard thanks would love to know how to treat my family for less we all love the rice crispy treats.

I think the packaged kind uses all kinds of chemicals and preservatives to obtain that softness. Eww. I have not followed the recipe in eons, and I just kind of throw the stuff in, but they always come out soft. I do use the entire package of marshmallows, and I think that varies from the recipe. I also use real butter, in the recipe and to butter my pan and to press the krispies into the pan.
Hopefully someone can give you some specific measurements. Good luck!

I found this recipe on a website and thought it looked interesting. I don't make rice crispy treats, but two things struck me. One they don't use that marsmallow creme, and two they don't push the treats down...

I included the url, so you can see the pictures (they actually took pictures along with the instructions).

    Rice Krispy
    10 oz Bag of Marshmallows
1/2 stick of Butter or 4 TBSP of margarine.
    greased pan or cookie sheet
    pot

    · First gather all of your measured out ingredients. The process is quick, so you must have all of your ingredients ready. Make sure your grease your pan first, so once you are finished mixing the ingredients you can pour warm mixture onto cookie sheet or pan.
    · Start by melting your butter or margarine into a large pot on low heat. Allow to mostly melt down.
    · Add 1 10 oz bag of marshmallows to pot when butter is mostly melted. Mix the butter and marshmallows. Coat all of the marshmallows with the butter. Let the marshmallow melt slowly, but NOT completely. The melted marshmallow and butter should still have marshmallow lumps.
    · When marshmallows are mostly melted, turn off stove and immediately add 7-8 cups of Rice Krispy cereal. (7 cups for really gooey treat squares). Mix cereal into melted marshmallows. Mix from the bottom up, evenly coating the cereal with the marshmallows.
    · Quickly pour onto greased cookie sheet. Spread out the mixture onto the cookie sheet evenly. DO NOT PRESS DOWN. Pressing down the mixture will result in hard square treats.
    · Allow to cool for an hour before cutting squares. The squares will stay soft and gooey for several days. Store in greased tupperware for freshness.
    · Enjoy!

I dont like the ones in the packaging...for some reason they have kind of a chemically taste to me.

But I love them soft and gooey, I dont even care if they fall apart . What I do to get them softer is use marshmallow cream. I dont know how much.. but usually at least one small jar maybe more...I just see how they look and feel in the pan. They always taste awesome! (Oh and otherwise same as on the box)

I think not pushing them down really hard will help. I agree the prepackaged ones taste fake to me, I can definitely taste fake vanilla. My son will only eat the prepackaged stuff...so he don't get them unless I have coupons and a rebate.

I use real butter and the recipe on the back of the box...maybe since I eat them quickly( no joke I can eat a half a pan in a day) they don't have time to get hard. I don't make them for the reason stated in the line above this one.

Maybe if you don't want them so crunchy...you might want to let the cereal sit out for a day so it gets stale, that would make them more chewy.
