I got this recipe from a friend in 1984, she got it from her elderly Aunt, I've made them every year since!

    1 c margarine
1 c shortening (I use butter flavor crisco)
    1 c sugar
    1 c Conf. sugar
    2 tsp vanilla
    2 eggs
4 c flour (shifted) 1 tsp baking soda
    1 tsp cream of tartar.

    Cream 1st 5 ingredients
Beat in eggs 1 at a time
sift in dry ingredients, beat in slowly
    devide into 4 parts
wrap in wax paper, chill until firm, overnight best
    roll on lightly floured board

(I dampen the counter, put down wax paper, flour the wax paper, put on dough, flour top of dough, then another layer of wax paper, I roll the dough in between the two wax papers.)

Ungreased cookie sheet flour cutters, 375 8-10 min.

    Frosting

    2 c confect sugar shifted
approx 2 tbls liquid, water, milk or lemon juice
    2 tbls softened butter
    2 tsp vanilla

    Blend carefully

too stiff add liquid, too thin add sugar, can add food coloring.

After frosting I use the tubes to outline each cookie, I plop in the freezer so it sets & they can be stacked, it's work but everyone just adores them!

This is the recipe I use and I make the best sugar cookies ever.

    2/3 cup shortening
    3/4 cup sugar
    1/2 tsp vanilla
4 tsp milk (I add a bit more as needed)
    1 egg
    2 cups all-purpose flour
    1.5 tsp baking powder
    1/4 tsp salt

Thoroughly cream shortening, sugar, and vanilla. Add egg; beat until light and fluffy. Stir in milk. Blend dry ingredients in creamed mixture. Divide dough in half. Chill 1 hr. Roll out to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 6-8 minutes.

I have a good recipe if you are going to use royal icing. For just everyday sugar cookies (like with colored sugar on top), I like a recipe I have that is much like the one Meems posted (less the frosting).

    3/4 Shortening
    1 cup sugar
    2 eggs, slightly beaten
    Mix together and set aside.
    -----------
    In another bowl, combine:
    3 cups flour
    1 tbsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp salt
Mix flour mixture slowly into shortening mixture.

    Then add:
    1 tsp vanilla
    1/3 cup milk

Mix in Kitchen Aid - be sure not to over-mix as this will make the cookies 'tough'.

Roll out dough and bake at 350 for 10 minutes, being careful not to over cook.

    Icing:
4 cups powder, 2 sticks softened butter, 1 tsp vanilla and tiny bit of milk - blend in kitchen aid until desired consistency is reached.
