Repair Kits Ready To Be Sent To Parents and Caregivers With Recalled
Simplicity Cribs
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC),
in cooperation with Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa., is announcing
today that a remedy is now available for parents and caregivers who
were
impacted by the September 21, 2007, voluntary recall of about 1 million
Simplicity and Graco logo cribs with older hardware. Simplicity will
provide consumers with a repair kit that immobilizes the drop-side.
After an intensive effort to develop a repair that would allow safe use
of the drop-side, CPSC staff and Simplicity have determined that the
safest repair option is to immobilize the drop-side. This repair
program
will be monitored by CPSC staff and is intended to reduce the risk of
death or serious injury to infants.
The free repair kit will be sent to crib owners who have pre-registered
or who register now on Simplicity's Web site
(Simplicity for Children) or through Simplicity's hotline at
(888)
593-9274. In addition, consumers will be offered a rebate coupon for a
future purchase as an incentive to return a reply card indicating that
they have successfully installed the repair hardware.
Simplicity will also have live operators available at (800) 858-8323 to
provide technical assistance to consumers and will make a video version
of the assembly instructions available at
Simplicity for Children.
Consumers who, due to the condition of their crib, believe they are
unable to take advantage of the repair kit should immediately call
Simplicity at (800) 858-8323 to address their concern.
The hazard with the recalled crib is that the drop-side can detach,
which creates a dangerous gap and can lead to the entrapment and
suffocation of infants. CPSC and Simplicity are aware of three deaths
in
Simplicity manufactured cribs with older style hardware, as well as
seven infant entrapments and 56 incidents with these cribs.
The Simplicity crib models with recalled hardware include: Aspen 3 in
1,
Aspen 4 in 1, Nursery-in-a-Box, Crib N Changer Combo, Chelsea and Pooh
4
in 1. The recall also involves the following Simplicity cribs that used
the Graco logo: Aspen 3 in 1, Ultra 3 in 1, Ultra 4 in 1, Ultra 5 in 1,
Whitney and the Trio.
To determine what type of hardware is on their crib, all Simplicity
consumers should call the Simplicity hotline, visit
Simplicity for Children, or refer to the hardware photos in the
press release.
WARNING: DO NOT use the repair kit on a crib that has not been
recalled.

Simple CPSC Safety Tips Help Prevent Halloween Hidden Dangers:
CPSC Encourages Parents to Incorporate Safety into Celebration
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Children around the country are eagerly anticipating
the night when they will wear their favorite costume and search for fun
and delicious treats. As Halloween creeps up, the Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC) reminds parents and caregivers that when it
comes to Halloween safety, there is no trick. Hidden dangers associated
with costumes, treats, and decorations can be easily prevented, so that
the holiday celebration is a real treat.
According to the CPSC, the most serious Halloween-related injuries
involve burns from flammable costumes and decorations, including
ignition from open flames, such as candles and Jack O'Lanterns. Other
incidents have involved abrasions from sharp objects attached to masks
or costumes.
"Home-made costumes that are not flame resistant continue to be the
major concern," said CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord. "When making a
costume, parents need to use inherently flame-resistant fabrics, such
as
nylon and polyester. Also, they should avoid long-draped items that
could cause an entanglement hazard."
CPSC helps keep children safe by enforcing the Flammable Fabrics Act
and
by recalling products at Halloween and throughout the year that can
cause injury.
Follow these safety tips to ensure this year's holiday is a safe one:
Costumes
When purchasing costumes, masks, beards and wigs, look for
flame-resistant fabrics such as nylon or polyester, or look for the
label "Flame Resistant." Flame-resistant fabrics will resist burning
and
should extinguish quickly. To minimize the risk of contact with candles
and other fire sources, avoid costumes made with flimsy materials and
outfits with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.
Purchase or make costumes that are light, bright and clearly visible to
motorists.
For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim
costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's
headlights. Bags or sacks also should be light-colored or decorated
with
reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware,
bicycle and sporting goods stores.
Children should carry flashlights to see and be seen.
Costumes should fit well and not drag on the ground to guard against
trips and falls.
Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes. Oversized high heels
are not a good idea.
Tie hats and scarves securely to prevent them from slipping over
children's eyes and obstructing vision.
If your child wears a mask, make sure it fits securely, provides
adequate ventilation, and has eye holes large enough to allow full
vision.
Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be made of soft,
flexible materials.
Treats
Warn children not to eat any treats until an adult has examined them
carefully for evidence of tampering.
Carefully examine any toys or novelty items received by
trick-or-treaters under three years of age. Do not allow young children
to have any items that are small enough to present a choking hazard or
that have small parts or components that could separate during use and
present a choking hazard.
Decorations
Keep candles and Jack O' Lanterns away from landings and doorsteps
where
costumes could brush against the flame.
Indoors, keep candles and Jack O' Lanterns away from curtains,
decorations and other combustibles that could catch fire. Do not leave
burning candles unattended.
Remove obstacles from lawns, steps and porches when expecting
trick-or-treaters.
Indoors or outside, use only lights that have been tested for safety by
a recognized testing laboratory, such as UL. Check each set of lights,
new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or
loose connections. Discard damaged sets.
Don't overload extension cords.

Thank you.
Thanks! I was just coming here to post this new list since I got it in my email. Thanks for beating me to the punch-repping you!
Good grief, a gov't recall to tell parents not to put a child in a bumbo seat on a table or counter???I thought that would fall under the "common sense" category.
I saw the same thing. Guess with 28 injuries reported, there were at least 28 parents/caregivers who did not read the first warning. sheesh!
Having a Bumbo of course I was immediately concerned when reading the post.....but then I read why they were recalling the product and my concern changed to sadness for the babies of these common sense lacking parents. It's a shame the company has to recall a million seats because of idiots.
I know it is common sense to not place the child on a table top, but if babies are throwing themselves out of these, a skull fracture is not that far fetched if the child is sitting on the floor in one these also---like if you have a tiled floor. I never had one of these, didn't really think it was good on the bones for children to be sitting before thier muscles/body are ready and able to.
Valid point about sitting on and launching on the tile floor. We have half tile and half carpet throughout our house. I put my DS in the bumbo while i get my shoes on on the tile floor in the laundry room. I often have wondered if he could somehow tip out of the seat but he seems to lean a bit forward instead of backwards in it. I'm more cautious using the seat now-only use for 5 mins or so at a time and at most a couple times a day. i prefer having my kids on the floor laying so they can learn to wiggle around or propped by pillows so they can learn to balance.
