    Default Need opinion on washer

Not sure if I am posting this in the right forum so if it is wrong I am sorry.
My washer has bit the dust and they are going to replace it. Now comes decision time. I've found a couple I am looking at but the reviews are so mixed they make me nervous making a decision. What kind of washer do you have and are you happy with it or do you have one that you would recommend?

Well I have a performa ( Maytag) generic brand and I had to have it serviced a week or so ago and the repair man told me that Maytag products are notorious for problems :( Mine machine is only 6 years old and has a horrible squeak noise while it is still working well the gear box is on its way out to fix that is $250 + so he said we would be better off using it until it kicks it cookies! So After a service call and $25 belt we spent $60 to find out our washer is well junk as far as the repairman is concerned. We won't replace it until it officially dies. We did ask him what was the best brand to buy so when the time comes we can make an educated decision and he said most are made to eventually fall apart. He said the companies count on the fact that people are either going to fix or replace the machines and it is what they are counting on. He also mentioned so many machines have to be serviced within the first year of a customer owning them and that is something else the companies are counting on. I wish I had a good answer for you but I also posting here so I can follow suggestions others post for you because we will eventually be shopping for a new machine because we know ours won't last much longer from what he said :(

We have the GE Harmony machines and are very happy with them. We've had them for years (washer for about 7 or 8 and the dryer for 5) and haven't had to have any servicing done. They are connected together and "talk" to each other so that's fun. That was new technology back when we bought them but I'm sure many of the options now can do that.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I had thought about a Maytag because they say they are so dependable but I just didn't like the ones I looked at yesterday and I honestly didn't even bother to look at the GE's because I the last refrigerator I had was a GE and was nothing but a headache. I've had several Whirlpool and Kenmore appliances and always had good luck with them but they make things so cheap nowadays and plus they make them to the point you almost need to get some kinda computer genius just to work them. LOL
Oh another note I have been very lucky with this washer and my last refrigerator. My last refrigerator I had kept a warrarty on it through Sears and when it started giving me trouble I called them to fixed it and because they couldn't fix the icemaker on it they told me to go to Sears and pick me out a new refrigerator. I was given an amount comparable (sp) to the one I had before an I chose a very nice one an am enjoying it and have had no problems with it.
My washer was covered by my home warranty (American Home Shield) and they are doing the same thing. I have of course not finished with this but so far things are looking up and hopefully this will be a easy process also.

Whatever you decide on, considering most large appliances have computer boards as a main component, get a warranty. Gone are the days when your hubby could fix it himself, like mine always did. If the computer component goes, it's expensive.

We have Samsung front loader washer and matching dryer that we got three years ago. Within the first year, we had the dryer sensor system go wacky, they replaced it and it's been fine ever since. But we have them covered for several years.

Now, watch the cost of the extended warranties too! Sears is extremely high on theirs and we find that Lowe's or Home Depot is better on that cost and if the item is on sale, we can beat Sears prices on comparable products.

We have Whirlpool washer & dryer. No bells & whistles, just regular ole washer & dryer. The dryer we've had for 10 years and the washer about 7. Never had a problem with either one of them, but the dryer I think is starting to go. It doesn't get as hot as it used to.

Our next washer will be a top loader without the agitator. I am not fond of the front loaders w/out the agitator because you have to leave the door open due to mildew issues.

I have a plain old GE Profile washer (also says Prodigy on one corner?). It's several years old and very basic and gets the job done. I mostly avoid computerized appliances and stick with basic stuff with knobs and dials because we are very much DIYers when it comes to maintenance and repairs. All I need is something that lets me select load size, hot/warm/cold water temp, and cycle. Anything more is just something else to tear up. The only thing about front loaders that appeals to me is that I think it's cool to be able to watch the clothes tumbling about, but I'm not willing to pay for that entertainment.

I guess my only point in sharing any of that is to consider whether or not it matters if you can repair it or maintain it at home once the warranty runs out.
