    HELP Soy Milk/Almond Milk?

    Ok, a couple of questions:

    - Is soy milk good for you if you're not lactose intolerant? I thought soy was thought to have bad effects on the body but I've heard good and bad.

    - What kind to start out with if you've never had it before and would like to make it part of your diet? (I had like two sips of Silk a long time ago in college and thought it was wierd but I'm not sure what flavor it was.)

    - What's you're favorite? Why (describe the flavor maybe?) ?

    - I read online that you could loose weight drinking soy milk or almond milk instead of regular cow's milk. Anyone have any thoughts on this? (Also heard the same about dairy - regular milk - so maybe everyone's just using it as an advertising ploy?)

Note: I wasn't sure where I needed to post, so please move if necessary. Thank you.

Hi, I see this is old, but I figure I would give you my opinions. Both my son (who is 3) and I are completely dairy free. He is highly allergic, and I just feel better overall since I stopped consuming it.

Are you doing it because your lactose intolerant or as a life decision? If you are just lactose intolerant I assume Lactaid would be an option for you.

However if you need or want to be completely dairy free then I would choose Almond Milk for yourself. I drink it myself and its delicious!! I LOVE Silk Almond in Vanilla the best. Blue Diamond also makes a delicious one. A real treat is the Silk Dark Chocolate Almond Milk
You could also try rice milk, however the taste is very bland and its consistancy is watery. My son drinks the rice milk and is fine with it.
Rice Dream makes a decent tasting rice milk.

Hemp milk is also VERY good for you, however I could not get passed the taste...so I don't buy it ever.

As for the soy, it really is your own personal decision. There is loads of arguments on both sides whether its good for you or not. Obviously one glass daily of soy milk won't hurt you (unless allergic). Soy is the most overprocessed with pesticides, and is to be known as the largest GMO crop in the world. Its not the same soy that was grown years and years ago. Organic soy milk in small amounts I wuld believe is okay.
You would be surprised soy is in EVERYTHING. Its a cheap filler for processed foods.
Soy also in larger amounts can affect hormones in the body, in both male and females. I personally stay clear of soy milk and tofu (in large amounts). Tempe is fermented tofu/soybeans in their most original state and is much safer.

As for the dairy, please keep in mind we are the only mammal species that still consumes milk past infancy. Its gross when you really think about it...sorry just my opinion.

    Good luck in your decision

Thanks for the input. I bought some Blue Diamond Almond milk in vanilla and I'm trying it. I like the flavor but it's a little strange to me. It helps though when I don't think of it as milk. It may take some getting used to.

As for the why, I'm trying it because I read it a few places that it was a good thing to replace in your diet for small weight loss but I'm not trying to lose a lot of weight either. I'm just trying to be more healthy. Almond milk has the omega 3's you find in the almonds and I need more of those in my diet.

I think any weight loss from drinking soy/almond milk would depend on which flavor you choose. I buy Silk Very Vanilla because we like the sweet taste (it contains evaporated cane juice). DD doesn't like the sweetness and prefers almond milk, which I think has less calories per serving but is bland tasting.

I've bought 8th Continent vanilla and I think Silk tastes better.
