Congrats! Haggling or bartering is fast becoming the "new money" as well as couponing. I have been doing this for years. As farmers, we haggle or barter services for various things. Also, when you go to a farmers' market, try asking for an "end of the day" discount for produce, etc. The farmer doesn't want to take it home.

There are also bartering services or gleaning services for all kinds of products and services. If you wish info, just PM me.

I personally like to haggle on clearance. I ask the manager "how much if I buy it all?" and I offer to take whatever they have left. Be that clearanced lip gloss or baskets of holiday candles or candy. I usually can score a deal because they need to get rid of it. Also Julie taught me the haggle tip for ground beef way back years ago. To go to the butcher at the end of the day and ask them what sort of price they can give you if you buy 20-25 lbs of hamburger meat. Most grocery stores have to toss the ground beef anyways so they are willing to make you a deal.

Also I find you have great opportunities to haggle on larger purchases at smaller stores because they are in competition with the big box stores. We got a new dishwasher at a local owned store by price matching Home Depot. He beat the price plus threw in free delivery and set up AND this store services all appliances they sell. So we got a better deal plus better customer service out of. And of course I will spread the word to my friends and family to shop there (Landmark Appliance in Gillette WY! LOL)

    That's a great article!

I haven't ever haggled her in America. I need to learn the ropes though!

I know all about the haggling and bartering. I just got a great deal on Hersheypark tickets from the buy $40 of Kraft deal at Giant PA. I got 6 tickets (gate value of $311) for around $150 OOP and well over $350 worth of food. I need work done on our car so we've bartered 2 tickets for the labour. Works out well for all of us.
