Making Lemonade!

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. That is what I have decided to do since two of the major grocery stores(Ralphs and Vons) around here stopped doubling $1 and up coupons.:frown:
I never really shopped at Vons. I would only go there for cheap and free items. The news that they would stop doubling really didn't bother me as much. This is the second time they have done this. "Fool me once, shame on you....."
What surpised me was that Ralphs would stop doubling $1 and up coupons! I never saw it coming, nor was I prepared for this.
What to do?
Ralphs has a new reward program where you receive $5 for every $500 you spend.
You have 3 months to accumulate those points, then you are sent a rewards certificate to spend at Ralphs. The Details are Here
At first I thought, "oooooweeee-stop-the-presses-Ralphs-is-bring-out-the-Big-Guns-$5-for-$500."
Yeah, it does not sound like a lot. I vowed I would never go into Ralphs again. They are to expensive, and doubling $1 and up coupons really helped reduce my grocery bill. But they had a 10 for $10 sale and I got free deodorant using $1 qpons. While viewing my receipt, I notice that the coupon amount increased my reward points. I didn't think they would count the coupons as points, but they do.
Here is where I can start to make lemonade. Last week, I had accumulated about 250 points. They gave you 100 points for turning in you old rewards card for a new card. Within a week, I now have a total of 756 points and I paid nothing out of pocket to get the extra points.
Here are two of my receipts from today.
--------------------------------------

As you can see, I went up 100+ points today. I spent nothing oop.
So this will be my goal. I will try and earn as many rewards certificates as I can from Ralphs without spending any money out of my own pocket.
I love lemonade!

What an awesome way to at look at it! A lot of couponers here don't understand what it means to lose the $1 doubles because either their stores don't double coupons, or they do double coupons, but not $1 and over. For us here, it comes as a disappointment and shock because food prices here are "regularly" higher than most places and the coupons are our lifeline so that we can lower our OOP without breaking the bank. Sure we are still lucky to have any form of double coupons, but since the stores will only double "one" like coupon, all other duplicate coupons are redeemed at face face value, and so then we are like the rest of the couponers that do not have stores that double.
Just thought I would throw that out there.

cost of living(to much)
Exactly! I don't want to sound ungrateful, but the cost of living here in Cali is quite expensive. $1 doubles helped to even things out.Posted 08-28-2008 at 09:34:19 AM by Zmom
