So I went to Big Lots, without my son. While looking around, regrettably I realized that I had to pee. I've been in Big Lots' bathrooms before. But I had to go.

So I go. My MO for public restrooms is hover, pee and then kick to flush. So I hovered. I peed. I turned around to toss the tp into the toilet and kick to flush. Then I saw the sign.

There was a handwritten sign, in both English and Spanish, that said "please do not flush used tissue. It will clog toilet. Please puy in waste can."

I looked down to see.....yes folks......a trash can filled with used tp. If I hadn't been so grossed out, I would have gotten out my phone to take a picture. I have posted this story on another board, and apparently this is a common practice in many other countries, and I don't mean struggling countries--Europe too. I've been to Europe and have never seen this.

My new personal rule is to make sure I never have to pee while I'm in Big Lots.

You know you're addicted to couponing when.........

I've been feeling icky for the past week or so. Friday I went to my doctor. I woke up with the worst sore throat I've ever had. Sure enough it's strep.

First questions I had for doctor were--what to look for in my son, in case he gets it.

But my second thought was......Yay! This means I'll be getting a prescription, which means a gift card! yay! That's when you know you're addicted. You think of gift cards before your own health.

I love Big Lots. They aren't exactly known for their customer service, but I know this so the bar is set pretty low when I go in.

One time, I had a cart full of stuff and went to get in line. As usual, 7 or 8 people in line, 1 cashier. Not another soul to be found who could possibly help her and jump on a register.

All of a sudden, this young woman cashier just looked up and said "I quit. I Q-U-I-T. Quit." And she walked out.

Why, oh why, do you continue to tease me with your commercials? Why are there commercials on my tv, but no Sonic within 40 miles?

I fell in love with Sonic when we lived in the midwest. Came back east, and no Sonic. Then Sonic commercials starting appearing on my tv. Still no Sonic.

Crushed ice. It's such a simple concept, yet you're the only one who does it. And what is better than a fountain Coke with crushed ice? And your tater tots. Mmmmm. And of course the slushies.

Are you listening Sonic? Because if you are, contact me and I'll give you my zip code so that you can build one near me. Until then, I guess I'll just stick with Five Guys. Sure, their fries are better. But no slushies and no crushed ice.

I just have had so much going on in my head this month, there was no room for CVS. I had a job crisis (they were going to eliminate my position!), this is a busy time of year at my work, and it's a busy time of year with my son. I have a special needs son, and this is the time of year when he gets re-evaluated in everything, in addition to we have a new specialist (an orthotist) to see and had to schedule that. This same son is also pushing through some molars (and exactly how long does it take!) and he's just miserable. I have had to leave the store twice due to his screaming, and normally he loves going to CVS. All in all, it was just a bad month and I am glad it's almost over.

I screwed up sooooo many CVS deals and I really was hoping to cash in on some of the moneymakers. I'm usually very good at this, but this month I was just always in such a hurry and my brain was so overloaded.

Venus--on both cards I screwed it up and forgot to give the CVS Q in addition to my mfr Q. On one card I purchased it twice so I didn't get the ECBs. At least the second time I purchased it on that card, I did remember to give the store Q and mfr Q.

Tums--When I got the $1 Q in the inserts, I used it to buy it on a card that I had already maxed out on, thus no ECBs. My other inserts did not have the coupon.

Adidas--I screwed this one up so many times I'm not even sure if I broke even. First, I bought it on a card that I had already maxed out on. Then I used my "free" coupon to buy it on a card that was already maxed out on this deal.

I also lost a gc that had 7.98 on it. Or maybe I've spent it and don't remember--at this point, who knows?

Makeup--the makeup clearance was a good deal and I had fun. Paid $1-$2 per item after Qs. But I got carried away and bought so much, it put a dent in my ECBs. My SIL and my best friend aren't complaining though, they have lots of new makeup too.

Then we needed tylenol and orajel for my son, I tried to work it into deals, and it ended up costing me $4 in ECBs for both. Not a bad deal, but it still cost me $4 ECBs. So now, in a few days, there's a Pampers deal. I want to do the Pampers deal, but as any good CVSer will tell you, it's very, very hard to break even on Pampers deals. At least for me, since I am unwilling to do more than one or two transactions a week. Heck, at this rate I better not go to CVS more than once or twice a week, I'd only be screwing up more. But I barely have enough ECBs to get the Pampers I want, and that will almost completely wipe me out of ECBs on one card.

I guess overall I shouldn't complain. I got lots of free stuff. I did gain $84 in RR at Walgreen's this month. But you CVSers know how I feel.

All of a sudden, I'm the cool kid in town. I've been couponing since college, the late 80s. I remember one time, being in a pharmacy and matching up clearance items with tearpads they had, right there in the store! I couldn't believe my good fortune. That and a free razor with a peelie deal, and I was hooked for life.

Anyway, my family and friends have tolerated my habit. He doesn't say it often, but I know my husband appreciates the money I am saving us. He may get frustrated when he's eating the same brand of cereal for the 20th day in a row, but he is also quite pleased when he's drinking his 20th free Gatorade in a row.

I clip lots of coupons. I'm not embarrassed to use them, not at all. Any restaurant, any salon, I don't care. To me, it's the same as having cash in my hand. My family and friends have thought it was quirky, but cute.

Now with this crappy economy, talk of a recession, gas prices, mortgage foreclosures......now everyone is interested in what I am doing. I have tried to teach others before. I have told them about the time it takes. How it's not just about saving money, you really have to enjoy it. You have to enjoy the challenge, enjoy the 'high' you get when you get an awesome deal on something. They've never gotten it.

I still don't think they'll ever get it. But they're more interested. They want to know how I get so much for free. How can a box of cereal really only cost 40 cents?

I must admit, it does feel nice, it has a bit of a redeeming quality to it. I'm no longer a weirdo or a cheapskate, now I'm a smarter shopper.

Instead of hearing "I could never do that" I am now hearing "I wish I could do that." You can.

Too Many Coupons

I never thought I would say this, but I think I have too many coupons. Let me tell you about my sources. First, I subscribe to my Sunday paper--the Philadelphia Inquirer. I get my inserts on Friday or Saturday, which is great.

Then on Monday, I go to my little local newsstand, and they give me the leftover inserts. I get inserts from the Wilmington News Journal and The Daily Local. The variety is nice.

On Tuesday or Wednesday, my mail package arrives from my dad. He mails me the inserts from the Allentown Morning Call. But recently even my dad has taken it to the next level. He asks HIS neighbors for their inserts. And he is very pleased with himself when he gets an accidental extra insert in his Sunday paper.

When all is said and done, I have anywhere from 10-20 inserts each week. Of course that's not including any printables that I print or tearpads that I pick up. I belong to a coupon train, so that takes a lot of them. And I've gotten much smarter in the past six months about organizing them.

But it's still too many coupons.........sometimes.
