Arrested!

Small town police must have nothing better to do than arrest an otherwise law abiding mom for failure to licence her dogs.
Yes, today the police arrived at my house this afternoon to arrest me on a Bench Warrent for failure to licence my dogs.
I had just put the three youngest of my kids down for a nap and my oldest daughter was about to leave to a friends when they came a knocking. They let me call my husband who was thankfully on his way home. I told him to head to the bank to get out $455 bucks for my bond and go to the jailhouse.
They had me empty my pockets and proceeded to handcuff me and took me downtown. I was processed and put in a holding cell with a lovely meth head who was in for fighting with her friend. The holding cell was nasty and gross and I sat there in my orange jail slippers and tried not to touch anything. I was thankful that I had peed before leaving as there was no way I was going to go to the bathroom on the nasty toilet!
After 4 hours they let me go. I have to call the courthouse tomarow to see if they still want me to go to court on the 6th or not (probably not since my bond paid for the fees)
So if you are ever in Wyoming...make sure you licence you dogs otherwise you could be wearing orange jailhouse slippers in a cell with drug addicts.

Thankfully they did wait untill I was out at thier car to handcuff me so that I was not cuffed in front of my daughter.
What had happened is that in Jan we had lost our dog Fuzzy and in late Feb we had gone to the shelter to adopt a new doggy, Ubu, and when we adopted her they ran our name through the system and saw that our other dogs licences were up for renewal. So they gave me a time frame to get that done but I also had to get appointments for everyone for shots and the Ubu spayed. So anyways....by the time everyone was vaccinated and UBU spayed I had missed the deadline.
Anyways...it is crazy. You can bet your bottom that lesson is learned. That I will get the dogs licenced right away because this small town does not have much leeway.Posted 05-02-2008 at 07:22:13 AM by queenofthehivemomof5

Oh an another thing...all 3 of my dogs are spayed now. All are current on thier shots. I fork out $100 a month for my Husky's antibiotics that she needs because she has a pulmonary lung deisease that leaves her open to phnumonia.
I am responsible pet owner, I just missed the deadline, but I did get it all done and they are licenced.
Im sure there are other real crimianals that the police force could be focusing on out there...Posted 05-02-2008 at 07:27:53 AM by queenofthehivemomof5

That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard!
You'd think they'd fine you with a late fee, not jail you.Posted 05-03-2008 at 07:11:39 PM by PurpleIris

That is just the craziest thing I have ever heard! I would be furious if I had that happen to me. Where I live they just give you a $25 dollar fine per dog. I got busted with that once when they came around knocking on doors looking for proof of a license if you had a dog in your yard. I tried to play it cool and was like "what dog?" LOL Of course our dog decided that was the time to be a watch dog and started barking like a nut at the officer behind our wooden fence. "Oh him, sorry we don't think of him as a dog, he's our baby" The officer was not amused. I quickly called my mom a few houses up and told her to put her dogs (3) in the house and not answer the door. She went down the courthouse that day and got the licenses for the dogs.Posted 05-10-2008 at 09:18:51 PM by mmb1996

Gee Whiz....I can't believe it.
Meanwhile, I'm kinda wishing I lived in Wyoming because I am having some major issues with my new neighbors' vicious dog. It came after my youngest son the other day and from the sounds of it I just knew he was a goner. Police and Animal Control say they are "working" on it whatever that means. Now I'm kind of wondering why one officer told me to file a city warrant and then another told me to just give them some time to take care of it. Three complaints for three different incidents from me alone in less than one week and two (that I know of) from another neighbor = I just don't understand what's going on.
Sorry that happened to you. I am sure you were horribly upset about the whole situation especially because of the kids. I guess 20 years from now you guys will be sitting around at a family get together and one of them will say "Hey, remember the time mom got arrested?"
Oh well, if letting the dog license slip by is your worst I'd say you're a SAINT.Posted 08-27-2008 at 08:12:45 PM by ELLE-TN

ha, i didn't read this when it was posted.
My sister had a major problem with her dog in middlefield ohio. when my sister moved there, my brothers and I helped her move in..there watching us on the street was a police car.hmmm..after like 2hours he came up and asked us questions like everything was normal. questions on who was living here and where did they move from?
well she moved from warren which is one of the city's on their list of bad. the other one was youngstown. we heard from boys playing basketball at the court.
so a month passes by and she talks to us on how each night she goes out they follow her car to her destination and back. She even said spotlight were turned on when she had someone visit! we told her its not right and she should do something about it. of course she thought it would just blow over.
a few weeks and they had her arressted for having HER dog which is a size of a cat, unleased in HER very own yard! cuffed and everything! each time she went to court the judge overruled she just had to pay a small fine but even then the judge thought something was not right when each week she would be in the courtroom for the very same reason.
the dog isn't a wanderer, stays in the yard but they said he was and by law needed a lease :(
I even witnessed how bad it was when i came to visit..they followed me and my brother (teenagers at the time) everywhere..maybe thinking we were dealing drugs? lol
she eventurly left..but that town reminded me of those movies. where when an outsider comes the police get involved.
i thought of this when you said you got arrested for being late! of all things! we don't have to license..or basicly do ANYTHING about our pets here (only speaking of my area lol) but there are times i wished they would like..max aloud pets no matter if they are outdoor pets or not.Posted 01-12-2009 at 01:08:04 PM by lifeskills13

This is almost unbelievable. In my New Jersey town (think this is the highest cost of living state in the country) I just paid $7 to get my dog licensed. If, after 2 months notice, I missed the deadline it would have been another $5. Then after another 2-3 months, they start calling to "remind" us. Then, they will come out to the house to "remind" us. At one time, they came out to remind us every year, and guess what? Every year they had it wrong because I had been paid up. Just my luck if I missed a year I would not have gotten a reminder and end up with a bench warrant for my arrest. I digress. I guess nothing surprises me anymore.Posted 03-04-2009 at 09:06:51 AM by Tagliando

WOW ... I knew I liked living out in "the boonies" for some reason -- think I just remembered one of them!
One thing about it, it's probably a good bet that pet owners WILL pay their fines, fees, etc. rather than stay in jail or have their "child" (as we think of ours) taken away ... sounds like an easy source of income for a town/city/state.
At least where I live, dog catcher won't come on to your property to take your dog and (don't know what actual law says, but) apparently only has to be on leash when off your property ... I know -- Finally had to call dog-catcher because was tired of fussing at my neighbors for 3 months to keep their dogs at home instead of letting them roam wild = translation: they spent more time in my yard than in their own, and my cat was getting MAD about it and "acting out."
Had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't the dogs' fault their "parents" didn't care about them enough to teach them to stay home ... "miraculously," after dog-catcher posted notice about leash law on their door, they managed to figure out how to keep the dogs in THEIR yard ... amazing! miracles never cease!Posted 03-16-2010 at 12:41:43 AM by jaws1

I see this is kind of old but our new neighbors had a little bitty dog that crawled under their gate, went around and squeezed through between our gate post and house. I saw him out there several times. Then one day the woman told my husband she saw him in our yard and one of our cats had him down on the ground just kicking the stuffing out of him. I never saw that little dog in my backyard again.
I had another cat a long time ago that beat up a bigger dog, one of those poodle mixes, something-poo. If it saw the cat in our yard it would run the other direction.Posted 11-05-2010 at 03:29:24 PM by nonegiven
