Right of Passage?

Posted 04-17-2009 at 04:38:48 PM by pinkproverbs

I am SO glad the 160 order didn't work out, because I wouldn't want to think about what my trip to Safeway would have been like if I had been buying 160 pouches instead of 14! I've read many posts about ignorant checkers and managers when it comes to their coupon policy, but today I went through a "right of passage" as I was given my receipt with no Catalinas.

Here's what I had bought:

14 Bertolli Sauce Pouches $28
2 Pure Protein Bars $ 2
2 Beechnut Cereals $2.98

Total Purchase $32.98
The Bertolli and Protein Bars were my $30 for the LWFG promotion

Coupons:
14 Bertolli $1/1 -$14
2 Beechnut $1/1 -$ 2
Doubler -$ 2

Total oop $15.98
(*looking at my receipt, they missed a coupon so oop should have been $14.98 but whatever)

So neither the Bertolli, nor the LWFG Cats printed. I said something to the cashier and she said I could go to customer service and figure it out. I did a Pledge discount and it didn't print anything either. Ugh!

I took my receipts to the CS desk and explained what had happened. Well, the lady focused in on the LWFG issue. After checking each item to make sure I had reached the total (only 2 different products), she told me the $10 would only print if I had spent $30 AFTER coupons. I told her that was funny because I belonged to a website with hundreds of people who had done the exact same thing and they had received their CATS. I also pointed out that even if she was right about that (which I knew she wasn't) why didn't the Pledge CAT print? I told her I had just talked to Catilina before checking out to make sure the deal was still going for Pledge. She said she didn't know anything about a Pledge CAT and so she went to check to see if there was a tag for it. Okay, I'm already so done with telling this story, 'cause it just frustrated me, so I'm going to abreviate the rest.

Manager came over and "confirmed" I needed to spend $30 after coupons (WRONG)

Manager told me this had always been their policy anytime they had a promotion like this and that their $10/$50 coupon even said it at the bottom in the fine print (WRONG)

After bringing up the Pledge deal, he told the CS lady to give me $9 (I think he wanted me to drop it)

I was on hold with Catilina at the time, but decided I would work the rest of it out with them instead of staying in the store and getting more and more frustrated.

Finally talked to Danny at Catilina and he told me the store had 3 printers down and my line was one of them. He got the information from my receipt and my address and is sending me the CATS I should have received in the first place. I also made sure he called the store to let them know that 3 of their printers were down. I was glad about that because then (even though I wanted to) I didn't have to go back in and tell them they were wrong, but they still would find out.

The most frustrating part was the fact that I had my 2 year old son with me who melted down. I felt so bad to make him stay there when he clearly was done, but I wasn't going to walk away from $33 in CATS. I didn't know at the time that Catilina would just send me the CATS because it was my first time. Now I know to just call Catilina and forget about Safeway.

I'm going to contact the District Manager and ask that more training would be made available. I don't want anyone to get into trouble, but I do want to make sure it doesn't happen to someone else. I'm so glad that I had read previous posts and was more confident in the fact that I wasn't wrong. I am going to shop at a different Safeway in the future.
