A new year (for me) time to get back on track financially!

So I just had my bday and I have been MIA in tracking my spending for a few months, my health had suffered quite a bit, but now I am feeling better, and pregnant to boot, so starting October I will be tracking my spending again, not to mention the holiday season is fast approaching. While in the grocery dept. I don't think i went way over budget these pasts months I haven't held myself accountable in many other areas and that is what I plan to work on now.

Dh and I are committed to starting an Emergency Fund now and we are well on our way this month. Dh has had a great month with commsions and we plan to add quite a bit more to the EF in a few more days.

I plan to go to the cash envelope system for most of the daily spending and track money more that way, I will stick to strict xmas budget and not dare go over the limit either. In years past I would have begun shopping a while back but financially it wasn't possible and I was shopping much less due to my health. I do have small start though, and I am making up a list so that i can keep my eyes out for good bargains along the way.

While our debt hasn't went down as much as we'd hoped these past months, we have managed to get rid of all car loan payments so that is a plus, and once we get better hold on our EF fund we will be hitting our debts more aggressively, but for the time being we will just pay the minimums plus about 100$ extra on the card we are working on snowballing.

Couponing has not been as important these past months, I have cut back on my shopping first because of my health, then because of morning sickness, but it is definitely nice to have a nice stockpile to fall back on in these times. But my first trimester is about to be over in a couple weeks, and I am beginning to feel better, so I will be trying to hit more sales and stockpiling more this fall to prepare for baby! But my diaper/wipe stockpile is pretty much complete until size 4/so it is nice to not have to worry about that now that i am preggo!

In addition to the EF, we have quite a bit of expected expenses that will need to be taken care over the the next months, so I am hoping for a few good months for dh at work so we can get some things taken care of that need attention.

ALL PRICES are after coupons, clearance, sales, rebates, /gc deals, etc.

This will be a reference list to compare prices and try to determine a stock-up price for organic foods. When I first started couponing I stocked up on items at a price I wouldn't pay now, so just like conventional couponing, organic couponing will be a trial and error process.
okay this is by far my hardest area to try to convert to natural products, because these are the easiest items to pick up for free a/c! So My new project is to start researching the best available conventional items through using the website skin deep and trying to find the items with the lowest hazard level. I was surprised to see the loreal everpure shampoo/conditioner to be rated rather high. At this point i am going to go through all my hba items and check their ratings, and anything with a high rating is going into donation pile or yardsale pile. OF course not all items will be listed and i know dh's bodywash i cannot find on there, so that stuff will stay if we really like it. Ugh, this is going to be a daunting task, but it is good for our health...And it will help me to learn what to avoid buying in the future.

Well this month is about to come to a close and just tallied up my totals and while i am happy with my grocery numbers, eating out seemed to be way over budget this month. I am a little disappointed in this as we are trying to eat healthier and financially i would have preferred to spend more of the money on food at the grocery store, march i hope to adhere to the budget better and try to get dh to stop eating out so much!

status of buying organic: all milk and eggs were purchased organic, all apples, lettuce, pears and yogurt, raisins, soup, bought 2 boxes of organic cereal this month, all organic carrots, celery. Mostly focusing on the fresh produce and milk and eggs. I had two successful trips to whole foods, spending about 60$ and savings over 110$ this month. Plan to go to whole foods bi-monthly from now on as there seem to be quite a few great deals unadvertised there.
We tried organic chocolate for the first time and it tasted great! For march I will continue transitioning to organic and using up the non organic stockpile. I am still buying non-natural soaps at the moment, I plan to clean out the food first and then the cleaning products and the body products are low on the list right now.

Food oop: 214.65
savings: 300.38
eating out oop: 101.78
savings: 15.00
great month for rebates!

checks: 10.00, 14.97, 9.75,
free products, stacy pita chips, excedrin, kashi cereal from rb. Hope to get a good deal on olay for that rebate and also get good deals for the pandg coupon rebate next month.

so i have found that tracking every cent is just not going to work for me, so i am thinking that going to the envelope system may be the best bet for...

so i have found that tracking every cent is just not going to work for me, so i am thinking that going to the envelope system may be the best bet for me that way i can track on a monthly or weekly basis and rather than figuring out how much i spent after the fact, it may be better to go over what i have at the end of the month, mainly in entertainment/eating out/gifts areas.

I will continue to track our food spending and savings as usual, only this year there is an added twist: we will be transitioning to more organic foods which pretty much equals less savings and less stockpiling. I will be doing more of a stockpile challenge for january for myself, and working on cleaning out the pantry. I have went over the spending for the past 11 months and it looks like i am at an average of 275$ a month for grocery/eating out spending, so my goal will be to try to eat more healthfully on 275$ a month, what every i don't spend one month will be carried over to the next. This figure also includes all cleaning/household/health and beauty products and while i may have 6-12 supply of odds and ends in the food department, my non-food items will probably last closer to 2 years for most items. I may sell some of my unwanted items that i get for free at a yard sale once or twice a year and use that money to stock up on items i can't get free.
I will not be switching over to organics 100%, only making adjustsment gradually where i feel they are needed.

January and february are normally times i slow down shopping or stop altogether, after the big xmas shopping days. I plan to do that also and i have learned that it is better to not buy something unless i know i will need it at some point as reselling is not always what is cracked up to be. Selling a few free items sure, okay, but stockpiling the wrong size pullups and your ds pottytraining before needing them is not okay, so i will definitely pay more attention to what i'm buying and make sure that it is not something that i may end up losing money on later on.

We will continue to work on our consumer debt. This includes: 8000 in student loans, 4200 in suv, and 14500 in credit cards, 850 in taxes, and about 5000 in medical bills. Although dh will probably be getting a settlement at somepoint this year, we will still continue to work on these debts as income flow allows and continue with snowballing them as usual. Our originial debt last year was over 54k and now it is at about 32k with the medical bill included. So we have made a lot of headway this past year despite many obstacles along the way.

Well with the holidays fast approaching and me dropping money on gifts, not to mention i bought ds a new carseat last week (a good deal, but still it was money oop,) I am feeling that the last half of november will be a good month to try living off the stockpile. I am making a last round trip to lawrence for mega deals at dillons and heading to target to use some expiring coupons and wags. Actually, after this week, until black friday I plan to lay low on the couponing front, I am needing to concentrate on holiday deals and I am starting a new curriculum with ds in a couple weeks for his homeschool/preschool. Cvs and wags is getting boring, i don't even want to put in the effort to figure scenerios, so I will be going there a bare minimum also. Just when ecbs/rr's are expiring. I've got 7.50 in rr expiring tomorrow plus a 3/10 grand opening coupons i am still scratching my head on what to do with them. I can honestly say I don't really need anything, so I am going to try to get xmas gifts/stocking stuffers and maybe one deal that I can roll, thinking of the boxed candy deals...I will be heading to cvs next week to roll some ecbs and use my 5/30 but other than that I am laying low...

Hopefully henhouse will have a good sale this week, i have 10$ g/c for there that I haven't used, there just haven't been enough sales there to warrant a trip up there since i got the g/c a few weeks ago.

Here's another way to save money on the grocery budget. I think this year i have spent minimal money on the garden. I used seeds i already had, and bought some organic fertilizer for about 9.00 but i haven't used all of it. So other than my labor and the occassional water i use to water the garden, this garden of about 100 sqft has cost me a few dollars this season. I have 4 squash plants, 12 tomato plant 4 different varieties, 1 cucumber plant 10 pepper plants, about 10 bean plants and one parsley.

I have been getting about 5 squash a week for a few weeks now, but haven't posted any pics. Here's what i picked today from our garden. One cucumber, and the tomatoes are finally turning red too.
