2010 budgeting goals

Posted 12-31-2009 at 09:51:47 AM by MamaBird06

so i have found that tracking every cent is just not going to work for me, so i am thinking that going to the envelope system may be the best bet for me that way i can track on a monthly or weekly basis and rather than figuring out how much i spent after the fact, it may be better to go over what i have at the end of the month, mainly in entertainment/eating out/gifts areas.

I will continue to track our food spending and savings as usual, only this year there is an added twist: we will be transitioning to more organic foods which pretty much equals less savings and less stockpiling. I will be doing more of a stockpile challenge for january for myself, and working on cleaning out the pantry. I have went over the spending for the past 11 months and it looks like i am at an average of 275$ a month for grocery/eating out spending, so my goal will be to try to eat more healthfully on 275$ a month, what every i don't spend one month will be carried over to the next. This figure also includes all cleaning/household/health and beauty products and while i may have 6-12 supply of odds and ends in the food department, my non-food items will probably last closer to 2 years for most items. I may sell some of my unwanted items that i get for free at a yard sale once or twice a year and use that money to stock up on items i can't get free.
I will not be switching over to organics 100%, only making adjustsment gradually where i feel they are needed.

January and february are normally times i slow down shopping or stop altogether, after the big xmas shopping days. I plan to do that also and i have learned that it is better to not buy something unless i know i will need it at some point as reselling is not always what is cracked up to be. Selling a few free items sure, okay, but stockpiling the wrong size pullups and your ds pottytraining before needing them is not okay, so i will definitely pay more attention to what i'm buying and make sure that it is not something that i may end up losing money on later on.

We will continue to work on our consumer debt. This includes: 8000 in student loans, 4200 in suv, and 14500 in credit cards, 850 in taxes, and about 5000 in medical bills. Although dh will probably be getting a settlement at somepoint this year, we will still continue to work on these debts as income flow allows and continue with snowballing them as usual. Our originial debt last year was over 54k and now it is at about 32k with the medical bill included. So we have made a lot of headway this past year despite many obstacles along the way.
