Urgh - bad house. 2/2/2007

Well, my dream has taken a temporary nosedive. It's OK, though...it's all for the best.
We paid $250 for a home inspection on the house that we put an offer on, and that is the best money we ever spent. The roof had a bad, apparently do-it-yourself repair done after the hurricanes that struck this area in '04. There were also several rows of shingles missing (hello??!). There was a water stain on the garage ceiling, although there was no current moisture.
The ultimate deal breaker for us though (as if that wasn't enough) was when we walked through with the inspector and the homeowners were sitting on the couch smoking. We have an asthmatic child, and that smell will never leave. They'd been smart enough to hide all the ashtrays and cigarettes on our initial tour, and it was obvious they'd just poured on the air freshener. That should have clued me in.
Oh well. We are looking into other options, including new builds in the area that are almost the same money. Why buy used when you can get new for a few dollars more?
This actually is a relief for me - things were moving too fast for my comfort. My realtor may soon be left behind as well - he feels we should "lower our expectations". Pardon me, but when something costs that much it'd better pretty dang nifty, if you ask me. Especially if I'm the one paying the mortgage.
