Thinking of making my own bread..

Posted 01-30-2009 at 12:00:35 AM by lifeskills13

i know i have been thinking a lot lately
well trying to find another way to lower my food budget. Like milk and bread, which we buy more times weekly then i can count lol one of the things we can't go without.

I have a bread machine that i bought early last year..only used it maybe three times since then :(
There are some really good recipes out there for the bread machine, but i hate the look of my bread when its made in there. Great for cornbread and things like that though. so im goin to just use my bread bans in my good oven.
I was looking at the cost of Sam's club bread flour, for 25lbs its 8something plus their yeast is a very good price too.
yea i know large amounts..but here is what im thinking, if i make myself buy milk ONLY at Sam's (unless i find it cheaper then 2.66around me which is rare) and make my own bread and try not to buy it at the store..i wonder how much ill save.

I can't even calucate how much it would be if i did it on my own. We buy bread up to three times a week (blame my DH has to have at least three slices for every meal, and my DS loves gumming on it, my DD also likes a slice w/ her meal.)
Sometimes I get it on sale w/coupon (which if i make my own i will still get the cheap priced bread) but 90percent of the time i pay 2dollars or even more (cornerstore :(

I basicly give or take spend $260 on bread a year.
Think i can lower the budget of bread a year if i make my own?

(if your wondering why we even pay 2.00 a loaf thats because im VERY picky on choice of bread. I want whole wheat ..i hate cotton bread lol i call it fake bread
so making my own will open a lot more choices for me

ETA: i was browsing on the net for more info, and found a great site, talking about homemade bread vrs. store bought.

I have read it costs about .30 per loaf to make and I read about some taking the bread out of the machine after it mixes and kneads it. They transferred it to a regular pan for the stove because they didn't like the shape.

    I haven't made bread in a while.

Sometimes I make my own bread too. I use the machine to knead the dough and then I take it out and transfer like the previous poster said. It turn out great. I am also picky on my bread. We like the whole grain stuff in our house too. I never priced it but I am curious how it would compare. It does come out more dense if you use whole wheat flour but if you toast it you can't taste a difference anyway.

I have been making my own bread for years. I use a kitchen aid mixer instead of the breadmaker now and shape the loaf and bake it in my oven. It makes a size loaf that is more practical for sandwiches, etc. The only time I buy store bread is if there is a coupon that makes it near free. I order my grain in 50lb buckets and grind it now as well. I was buying flour but since its pretty expensive AND you lose all the nutrients, I started researching grinders. Also, wheat flour will spoil and gets bitter. Fresh ground is not. I also discovered that freshly ground wheat made into bread is better than you could possibly imagine. We typically eat 5 loaves a week.

yes i heard people using the bread maker for the kneading only...lol but i also heard the kneading yourself is very therapeutic..i need a lot of that! lol

Thank you shrenlee, i saw a site that sells their grain, and other things by 50lbs. I would love to do what you ended up doing. The very first reason i switched my DH from white bread to whole wheat is the nutrients..but never imagined i can make it myself for tens times more nutrients.
Im goin to start small like four ingredients, if after a week i got that mastered..ill ventrally want to grind the grain like you mentioned.
any links about a grinder..or the one you use?
I heard also about high-gluten flour will be needed if you use any thing like grains..so the bread can stay together and not crumble..what is your opinion on that?

thank you guys for feedback..its so much better discussing my thoughts with you, then w/ my kids..not sure on the translation of their talk..but getting there! lol

If you aren't going to use your bread machine anymore, SELL IT! I just bought one for $20 at a garage sale, slicer included. You could put the money you make towards ingredients :) Craigslist is where I was looking for one, I just happened to find a garage sale in my own neighborhood with one before I replied to any ads.

there is a really good recipe for a bulk batch of bread dough online at http://www.motherearthnews.com/Real-Food/Artisan-Bread-In-Five-Minutes-A-Day.aspx
This recipe can be refridgerated and used over a span of days, frozen and you don't even need to wash the bowl, just keep reusing it and the flavor of the dough takes on a sourdough quality and gets better and better. I have made it twice and absolutely love it, you can sub in whole wheat flour-great recipe. AND sorry forgot to add very fast, and easy, almost foolproof-no fancy rising and kneading techniques!!

I read your post and the article you posted, and I think that's a really good idea. I can pick up a nice, used bread machine for about $25 here. DH is all for it, he loves eating bread, lol, so we're considering it.
