Once again, CVS-T was out of the main part of the deal I was going to do (the deodorant). While the folks that work there are friendly enough, the store just doesn't stock what I want to get a lot of the time, and that stinks. I convinced my husband to drive to CVS-A, and they had everything I wanted. Yay!

The cashier I got at CVS-A was really awesome on very many levels. I asked her if it was okay to use the $1 Sure coupons if I was using the BOGO coupons as well, and she said she didn't see why not, if it went through then it was all right. They went through, so I saved myself an extra $3!!!

Not only that, the Lipton Green Tea had $1 peelies on it. It said they were for 'pyramid' tea, whatever that is, but the cashier scanned them AND THEY WENT THROUGH!!! She saved me another unexpected $2!! Considering how much tea we drink at this house in the evening (and our guests when we have gatherings) this was VERY NICE!!!

I had a CRT for $1 off any CVS pantiliners that I got when I got the Stayfree pads from last week. I warned her it might need overriding to $.99, but the full $1 went through. LOL free penny!

I handed her my reusable bags as she was ringing me up. She asked me where I got them, and said they were kinda neat when I told her I made them. I've been getting lots of compliments on them. At the end of the transaction, the register spit out about five ECBs and a bonus CRT. She mentioned that I still had a bunch of money to spend, and I just grinned and thought don't you worry, I'm going to be back in a few weeks!!!

I checked the CVS forum and stratusxp posted an awesome deal -- on 20-27 July, CVS has L'orel Vive Pro Shampoo/conditioner on sale as a BOGO deal. What she so helpfully pointed out is that the 13 July inserts have a coupon for BOGO!! FREE SHAMPOO! I'm going to be stuck in Montana for this deal, which kinda sucks but I can work with that.

Related: My husband thinks this whole idea is a little silly. He doesn't always say as much, but that's what he's thinking. The buying of multiple papers, and ESPECIALLY the stockpiling. He just doesn't understand the idea, and thinks having twenty bottles of shampoo and conditioner is a bit ridiculous, even if we effectively don't have to pay for them. It frustrates the crap out of me.

The other problem (which I'm going to test out today, before I leave) is whether my CVS will do the BOGO as a 'half off each' sale, or ring up the first at full price and the second free. If I do this myself, I can argue the point of them ringing up as actual BOGO and not half off. If my husband does it, he won't know the difference and wouldn't want to argue the point.

Bearing these two things in mind, I'm actually hoping that CVS-T is out of stock of the shampoo and conditioner when he goes in. I'm going to ask him to get a raincheck for the BOGO, so that when I get back from Montana I can do it myself. I'll make sure to doublecheck the conditions of a raincheck (namely, is there a limit on quantity).

My goal is to get around ten papers, and do my first real stockpiling, whether my husband likes it or not! This will be a bit more difficult if I don't like the conditioner -- I prefer my conditioner to be rather thick, not watery like some of the cheap stuff. Beggars can't be choosers, I know, and free is free, but if I'm going to be stuck with the stuff for a year I'd like to make sure I'll actually sort of enjoy it, right?

The earlier trip to CVS-T didn't pan out quite as I'd have liked; they didn't carry Soyjoy, they've always been out of Listerine, and they had the wrong stupid price up for the Colgate. All the same, when I went to CVS-A I could not have planned this better if I tried. Pulling a scenario out of my butt as I tossed stuff into my basket, I pulled off quite possibly the most perfect thing ever.

Soyjoy bars x8: $8
Smart Rinse 250ml: $3.49 - $1 Q
Gatorade BOGO: $1.89

The Gatorade was my husband's idea, because I always get thirsty at the grocery store (where we went when we got out of CVS). Looking back I shouldn't have bothered, since Meijer has Powerade for $.59 this week (#*&^!@), but oh well...

Today I learned that the self-checkout computer will complain about two (well, three) things:

#1: Using more than two coupons.
Solution: Have a register monkey come enter their code so I can get into supersekrit cashier mode (SSCM) and scan more in.

#2: The item price is less than the doubled coupon price.
Solution: Tell the computer in SSCM mode to just use the item price as the coupon price.

#3: The hidden cap for coupon usage.
Solution: Use SSCM to enter them in by hand.

Bonus discovery: They only double two coupons of the same item, so I now split transactions when I have more than two of the same item with $.50 or under coupons. *nodnod*

The DiGiorno wasn't included in the sale (grrr) but we got the pie anyway, because we haven't had pie in a while, they're really good pie, and the coupon was going to expire. Patience only lasts me so long.

Four boxes of whole grain pasta rocks. Two more for $.38 apiece is pretty nice too.

Fifty-cent jello is niiiiice. I wish I'd had a coupon for it. ):

Normal Price: 66.27
Sales + Coupons: 23.41
Total OOP Cost: 42.86

The point behind this is to find out Why it cost as much as it did. Looking over the receipt, I see why I paid as much as I did. I don't have a problem with paying this much, but the why will help me figure out what to do later on.

#1: I bought four boxes of Near East pasta. I learned that Meijer only doubles two coupons of the same type -- in this case I had four $.50 IPs, but only the first two doubled. I could have saved another dollar by splitting the NE boxes into two transactions. They were on sale for $2 each, and I paid $5 for four. IN THE FUTURE I will try to get a small basket and anything that needs to be split into a second transaction can go into that basket and done FIRST.

#2: I completely forgot to use the $.45 coupon for the cottage cheese I bought. That's another ninety cents I could have saved. (I do see, however, that the tubs were on sale for $3 apiece, so there it is.)

#3: I bought three boxes of Carefree pads, which I hadn't planned on. They were B2G1F, and I had a $1 coupon, so I paid only $1.66 per box (4.99 total afore tax). They were an unplanned buy -- but I now have enough of the things to last me for MONTHS, so I won't have to buy any of the other packages for a very long time.

#4: We also had a few unplanned buys: R wanted to get two of the Cottage Doubles we saw on sale for $1 apiece. I had a $.55 coupon which brought them down to $1.45. Snyders of Hanover are very tasty snacks, and they were BOGOF @2.89. Meijer frozen stuffed pasta in the 25-oz packages were on sale for $2.50 apiece. We bought four, costing us $10. We've been out of hand soap for a while, so a small Softsoap dispenser cost us $1.50 on sale.

In the end we could have knocked it down to roughly $20 by eliminating the unplanned items and remembering how to properly use all my coupons. I likely could've done better.

On the positive side, we have enough of a stockpile now that we may be able to avoid going into town altogether for a week or so and just shop in the local store for the consumables that we need!

Over the last week or two, I've made some small purchases at CVS. I forgot to include them, partly because they were pretty small and not quite worth mentioning PLUS they managed to be OUT of something I wanted each and every time I went. Talk about frustrating ...

We went grocery shopping today, so we went to CVS-A that's in the town our Meijer is in (as opposed to CVS-T, which is in the little piddly town I live in). THEY HAD EVERYTHING I WANTED!!! For once, my scenario went EXACTLY THE WAY IT SHOULD HAVE. It's about bloody time ...

There was a major snag -- the computer didn't want to take more than one ECB (I had four), so the manager had to do some fu and faked the ECBs by inputting it as cash -- except that I only had about forty cents, not the $1.55 they wanted. I scrounged up the rest of the change out of the 'take a penny' thing by the counter, but we were going to be short a dollar. The manager told us not to worry about it, but we asked if there was a way for them to add a dollar to the second transaction so that we could legitimately give him his one dollar. In the end we had them ring up two more candy bars that we didn't actually take. The manager seemed happy that we were nice enough to ask. I made sure to thank the manager for his time and patience in helping us out with the whole affair.

ON TO THE JUICY DETAILS!

Transaction #1:
Cheerios x1
Cinnamon Toast Crunch x2
Honey Nut Cheerios x4
Listerine Smart Rinse x3
Coupons: $6
ECBs: $22.65 + $4/$20 Email
OOP: $1.55 due to ECB snafu making tax more
ECBs gained: $10.47 + $10
Transaction #2:
Reeses Peanut Butter Cups x2
Total: $10
ECBs: $10
OOP: NOTHING!!!!
My husband started laughing as we were leaving the store. He thought it was a little ridiculous that we basically bought $44 worth of stuff for a buck and fifty. He's starting to understand (:

Went into CVS to do a nice batch of deals and roll some ECBs -- Listerine x2, then bandaids and lots of tuna. I'd heard the limit was raised on the Listerine, so I was going to roll the Listerine once for good measure and end up with four bottles. THEY HAD ONE BOTTLE LEFT. Argh. I spent some time doing emergency math to figure out a new scenario (without a calculator, since I forgot my phone) and ended up just getting the one bottle and some soap. We were almost out anyway. I'm just frustrated I hauled my butt out there and didn't get most of the stuff I was after!

I'll call them up later this week and make sure they've got some, then roll the $3.49 ECB to get three more bottles -- or if my husband has enough money left over on Friday, I'll just buy all three at once and have even MORE ECBs for next time. Or something. I'll figure it out.

Listerine Smart Rinse: $3.49 - $1 Q
Ivory 4-pack: $2.49
ECB used: $4.69
OOP w/tax: $.37
ECBs Gained: 3.49 + 1

ALSO I have a $4/$20 coupon from an email, which I'm hoping to use next week. It's my first one, wooo!

Rolling those ECBs and making use of the new monthly freebies. My husband made a comment about buying a bunch of stuff we don't need; with that in mind I may skip the Brut deal (and I couldn't find the $2.69 stuff anyway -- maybe it's at a different store). In any case, I used up some ECBs and got a couple things that we could actually use.

CVS Bandaids: $3.98
Oral-B Crossaction two-pack: $6.99 x2
Carefree liners: $.88
Total: $18.84 pre-tax
OOP with tax: $1.50
ECBs Gained: $3.98 + $6.99 + $6.99
In interesting news: The Monthly ad says the CVS bandages are Limit 2 -- but my receipt does NOT say I have reached my limit. Perhaps they raised it??? Hmmmm...

Actually the problem was me buying the wrong darn toothpaste the last time. I fixed that pretty quick, borked the order of handing over CVS card - Qs - ECBs - Money card - cash, but luckily the manager was kind enough to forgive me and let it go through anyway (:

Well, I sort of screwed this one up. Eh. I'm new at this, I expect to screw up a few times, and in the end it's all good. #2 should have had the toothbrushes, not the allergy pills. Blah.

I rode my bike out to CVS-T today and cleaned up on the monthly freebies. Whatever we don't end up keeping we'll donate to a shelter.

Something else went a little funky with the toothpaste stuff. Either I somehow bought the wrong stuff, the ECB didn't show up or print, or I didn't get that ECB -back- when I did #3. I'm guessing it's either the first or the second option, myself. If I -did- buy the wrong stuff it was because they were out of the other stuff and they restocked with a different product (boooooo), in which case I'll just return it and no harm done.

Transaction #1:
Adidas Action 3 deodorant x3: $14.97
ECB Used: (3 + 3.99)
OOP with tax: $8.46
ECB Earned: 14.97

Transaction #2:
CVS Loratadine 5-ct x3: $11.37
Aquafresh Advanced x3: $11.07 (something went funky here)
ECB Used: 14.97
OOP with tax: $7.92
ECB Earned: 11.37

Transaction #3:
Colgate 360 Deep Clean toothbrush x2: $7.98
Tums Quickpak 24-ct: $4.69
ECB Used: 11.37
OOP with tax: $1.38
ECB Earned: 7.98 + 4.69

Overall OOP: $17.76
Remaining ECBs: 7.98 + 4.69 = 12.67

NEXT WEEK:
I get to experiment. My card showed up, so now BOTH OF US have one!!! MWAHAHAHA!!!
