Education!

Posted 09-16-2007 at 08:33:12 PM by jonjaktez

I was not a great student in high school. It's not that I didnt' care about school, I just didn't want to waste my time. When I finally went to college (several years later), I was concerned that I couldnt' do it. Well I did it and graduated with an associates degree in Accounting. I was 1 point from graduation with honors and that really pissed me off. I worked for several in the accounting field and quit my job for several reason. I looked for another job for months but the jobs I could do, I couldn't get my foot in the door becuase I didn't have that BS. So I went back to school. I spent 2 years in a 2 yr college to get as many transfer credits because it was cheaper. I did that and trasnfered to a university this semester.

I've been at the university for a little over 4 weeks. Boy is it different. The classes are all spread out and it makes it hard on me because I'm there all day, everyday. I havne't made many friends and I don't know why. At the other college I always made friends and it was a blast. Now i'm stuck being alone. I do have a few in class friends and I guess that's ok. I eat lunch by myself 2 days a week and the other 2 I am now eating lunch with one of the students in a couple of my classes but it does feel weird because I'm so much older than these kids.

The classes are strange also. 3 out of 5 of my classes are too worried about doing the work on the computer. While I'm comfortable with the computer I feel they are too focused on this instead of teaching us the material. This is something I will have to deal with. Thank goodness I've already had the accounting classes, I'm just having to learn this stuff again and/or remember it because I'm having to teach myself since the teachers aren't really teaching.

My classes and opinion of them:

Cost Accounting: The teacher is worried that we will not know how to apply Excel with Cost Accounting in the work place. We also discuss a lot of stuff in class and he dont' really teach us how to calculate the info. I have test on 3 chapters tomorrow.

Intermediate Accounting: The teacher is so not teaching. We have homework due before we've even learned the material. This drives me insane! Why give us homework and check it for correct answers before you teach us the stuff???? Well he actually doesn't teach at all. Had a test last Monday

Computer Class: I've had to take this same class 3 times. This is the 3rd time. I understand if the programs have had a major change in them that it will be helpful but sheesh when is enough, enough? Had a test last Thrusday.

Marketing: I like this class. The teacher is cool and he makes this class fun. We aren't really using the book. We take notes everyday from a powerpoint presentation and we have to write all those down as fast as we can. I do miss some info doing this. We had a test Friday.

Business Stats: This class drives me nuts. It's not that the material is hard, it's the teacher. He is the one that is seriously focusing too much on the computer. I have no idea what is going on in this class. I just wish he would focus on the material first and Excel second. We have a test Thursday.

The tests in each class are strange. It's also annoying. Each class has 2 to 3 test the semester. I prefer more test with smaller amounts of material so I actually have a change to learn this stuff!

Hopefully things will get better.

What about bringing some type of recorder for your marketing class? Alot of people do something similar.
Aw Honey lunch by yourself just means more you time. I remember back in hs when I wished that I had enough courage/self esteem to just go somewhere sit down and read, instead I followed others around. It's just the beginning I'm sure you'll get use to this new schedule in due time.

Things will get better!! Just focus on the end result. =)

Hang in there it will get better. I agree with love_virus....that you should look at eating lunch by yourself as a plus not a minus. It gives you time to have a little you time. You could read, do homework, plan a coupon trip, whatever!
