I love "I Capture the Castle"! That's a great book, and Dodie Smith is a wonderful writer! Have you ever read her original "101 Dalmatians"? My kids of course love the movies, and I wonder if the book would hold their attention. I've never seen it on any reading lists for children that I can remember, but if it is as well written for children as "I Capture the Castle" is for adults, I imagine it would be quite good.
