Third Time's the Charm

Posted 10-05-2007 at 06:33:36 PM by Carolina Momma
Last night, something happened in our house that's never happened before - a baby actually slept in the crib (gasp!). The most under-utilized piece of baby equipment we've ever bought, finally got put to use. We're basically a co-sleeping family. Little did DH & I know we would become one when we bought the crib over 4 years ago for our first little one. We got everything in her room ready for her arrival and lo and behold, our little princess wanted absolutely nothing to do with the crib. So as terribly sleep-deprived first time parents, we welcomed her into our bed. An arrangement that benefited all parties, DD got the nighttime closeness she needed, and we got some sleep.

Two years after DD rejected the crib, our first DS arrived. By then we had become familiar with the term "co-sleeping" and the principles of attachment parenting. So there was no expectation he would sleep in the crib and no shame on our part for sharing sleep with our little man. In fact, DS slept with me while we were still in the hospital. But as DS got older, it seemed like none of us were getting good sleep anymore. So we transitioned him to a toddler bed next to our bed. It wasn't smooth, but he did settle into having his own bed eventually. Which worked out great because by then I was pregnant again and didn't want to worry about little toddler feet flailing in the night. But after the baby was born, DS became a co-sleeper again and joined DD and DH in the other bedroom.

Which brings us to the baby, now 9 months old who has co-slept with me since he was a newborn - until last night. We moved the crib into our bedroom mainly so I would have someplace to put the baby in the mornings as I got ready for work. Earlier this week, I found him standing in the bed against the headboard. So last night, I introduced him to the crib and figured I'd let him hang out in there until he got fussy, then bring him into bed. But apparently we both fell asleep because I woke up a couple of hours later to find him soundly asleep in the crib. And there he slept, all night.

So I guess some things do get easier the third time around. After having two little ones who seemed to have resisted every transition there was, #3 seems determined towards independence. But I guess I should have expected it from the baby who seemed to start crawling, standing and cruising all in the same day
