Q about registers and overage

So I am so very much enjoying myself at Bi-Lo yesterday (and HT), just picking up things that were very close to free or free. I am not a regular Bi-Lo shopper but had understood that there is no overage there, so I wasn't worrying about putting anything in to counteract the "negatives". My total was in the negative over $7. The cashier and I looked at each other and I said I thought that wasn't supposed to happen and he said he thought the register wouldn't have allowed it either. So I pick up the hefty plates and cups and paid less that a dollar. I noticed there were several beeps, and thinking back could it have been on the last coupon of each kind and he just pushed them through? Very interested in your thoughts. I really don't like to be in this situation and really don't want to add more just to be adding. Thanks in advance!

It depends on the coupons.. The computers are not allowed to double a coupon and give you overage. So if the item was 1.00 and you have a .60 coupon it would be like 1.00-.60-.40=Free. Now if you have a .78 cent product and a 1.00 coupon it would give you the overage but might beep and most of the time they just push them through.

I have had success with overages on coupons, if I scan my bonus card at the END of all of my items. When the coupon doubles (or triples!!) the computer bases it on the retail price, not the sale.
