Default Hot Buttered Rum

1 lb melted butter
2 lbs brown sugar
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon each cinnamon, allspice and cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Pour melted butter over brown sugar and add spices. Mix. Add eggs and beat well.

To serve: 1 heaping tablespoon to 6 oz boiling water. Rum to taste. (I use dark rum.)

This lasts for months in the fridge, because the sugar keeps the eggs from spoiling.

The recipe makes a ton. I put into little decorative jars for the holidays with the recipe on a tag around the neck. Makes a great gift for neighbors and as something to take when you do one of those holiday drop-in visits.

Larissa,
This sounds wonderful. When I was a little girl I remember my mom making the 'mix' (even though I never got any). I don't remember the eggs though. What do the eggs do? Make it creamy? I have no idea, but I know what I'm about to make in a few minutes! LOL

Will it make me drunk? I hope. JK

Only if you actually add the rum! I sometimes don't, and it's still tasty. I may actually make this early, while I am still pregnant, and try to convince myself that there's rum in it! LOL

The eggs make it thicker and creamy, as opposed to the nasty excuse for hot buttered rum that you usually get at a bar. I actually had one bartender float a pat of butter on a glass of hot water and cinnamon (very little rum) and try to tell me that's the way it's supposed to be. Riiiiight.

Yup, the eggs DEFINATELY give it smoothness! I just had to make a batch! I halved it but used 2 eggs and dark brown sugar. I only had about an ouonce of dark rum in the house, so I was only able to make one glass. I let DH try it and almost didn't get it back! I'm gonna try it with rum extract and see how it tastes. Then I'll get the taste without the alcohol. I wouldn't want to get drunk on this stuff and seeing how it tastes so good even with the real rum in it, it would be easy to do. But I don't want to go that far.

Thanks for posting the recipe!

OK, I didn't even think about rum extract. Let me know how it tastes!

This sounds incredible! I've never tried it before, but as you said-- it seems like it would definitely be nice for the holidays. I can imagine chasing down some sugar cookies with it! YUM.

Made more yesterday and used the rum extract. I thought it actually tasted better.

Oh, and I made it with unsalted butter this time, rather than the ICBINB fake stuff. It was good, but the unsalted butter was much better!

I always use real butter. That may have been the taste difference you noticed. But I am a rum drinker, so will probably prefer the real stuff! LOL
