My uncle was just diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Lukemia).

• Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) occurs more commonly in adults than in children, and more commonly in men than women. AML is treated with chemotherapy. The five-year survival rate is 40%.[3]

He is currently fighting for his life at the University of Michigan Hospital. This has been devastating news for our family. He is only 46 years old and has a daughter (my cousin) graduating high school this year. My aunt and uncle are labor workers. Actually all my family are labor workers. My aunt and uncle work very hard but make very little. My uncle works doing golf course maintenance and actually the doctor brought up the point that working with all the chemical and pesticides could have been a cause for this but in reality we will most likely never know the exact cause. My aunt has not been able to work because she has been downstate. To make matters worse, after the diagnosis, they hit a deer with their car! So my mom (who is currently unemployed with zero income) was helping with errands etc and took them down to U of M where she is currently staying with my aunt at the hospitality house. My mom is spending money to help them even though she doesn't even have any herself. My uncle James currently has ZERO health insurance. I am sure that eventually his medical bills will be covered since they make so little but they are behind on a house payment, lights, heat etc. My uncle James of course can't work and prior to this he missed lots of work. (Actually he shouldn't have been working anyways because he just diagnosed last year with rheumotoid arthritis--which has been extremely painful for him but he couldn't afford to quit his job). They weren't sure what the problem was at first, his body wasn't making any platelets and he was LITERALLY living on blood transfusions. When they figured out he had leukemia, they had him rushed him down to U of M because most people don't survive more 1-2 months without treatment. He has been started on chemo......he will have 7 days of chemo for 24 hours a day. Then a bit of a break with some meds and then around round of chemo for 7 days for 24 hours a day. They had to test his organs to make sure they could withstand the treatment. The doctors said this was very serious and even if the treatment helps........relapse is very common in the type he has. If it comes back then they are talking about a bone marrow transplant. My uncle James is actually the youngest of his siblings. None of my family makes any decent money....most are laid off (we live in Michigan and jobs here are extremely scarce). I never thought I would be the one asking to have a benefit auction.......since I'm usually the one donating to causes......but I have been very sick myself and I do not have health insurance either. I have racked up some serious medical bills within the last 3 week so I'm only to help my uncle with $200.00. For those of you that have seen my posts before......know that my husband has been looking for a better job for a long time now. My heart aches because I wish I could help my uncle more. So I got to thinking, I don't have any more money but I do have stuff.....so I asked for permission to hold this auction (Julie said it was ok--THANK YOU JULIE). Christmas presents are NOT important, but being with family is. So my whole family will be driving downstate and having "Christmas" at the U of M hospital (this hospital is about a 4 hour drive one way). Family is the most important thing but it sure would be nice if my uncle and aunt didn't have to worry about losing their house, or worry about the shut off notices--that would be a huge awesome present for them. I don't have much but I also have my coke points account which I am auctioning off. The points are already entered. I will just email the password to whoever wins the bid I have some box tops. The only other thing that I can think of that I have is finger paintings from my 4-year old Of course I'm sure those are only valuable to me and not others

edited to add: the social worker at the hospital said they only allot so much money and they won't pay for the hospitality anymore for my aunt or mom. And we don't want to leave my uncle there all my himself scared.......so is going to be another HUGE expense.....:frown:

Right after posting this auction........I JUST got word that the social worker is out of funds to approve for staying at the hospitality house. They can't afford a hotel, none of us can but we can't leave him by himself there so my mom and his wife will be sleeping in the room and in the lounge area. I guess that is where we will be sleeping on Christmas......doesn't matter where we sleep though as long as we are all together. They are talking about moving him to ICU because his blood pressure has dropped to 80/50 and they aren't sure why. Just got word on that too.
