Re: Diaper Cakes? PattyC- I can't bake or cook in real life so diaper cakes are the only cakes I make. The link with instructions seem pretty through. The only tips I'd add is that I use big rubber bands to secure the folded diapers. To hide the rubber band that is holding each layer together I use wide ribbon or I'll take some washclothes, onesies, bib, baby blanket, etc to fold over to hide.
I've put in thin wooden dowels carefully (don't get any of those diapers) poked between the 3 cake layers. Seems like everyone wants to pick up the diaper cake and you run the risk of your layers flying away if things are just tucked in together. If you make the dowels just about an inch taller than the highest layer you can put a little stuffed animal on top and tie the legs down by putting ribbon around the dowels to secure. (Did a very cute Winnie the Pooh cake this way. And had a bunch of other W the P items on it as well.)Would work the same for a toy, those dowels are good for securing that on top too.
I like to put lots of curling ribbon on each layer. Just looks festive, and hides the wooden dowels.
If you can't find a cake plate what I've done is put a plate down to make a circle on cardboard. Make same size circles of baby wrapping paper, glue to cover front and back.
I also like to get those big clear basket gift bags from Micheals (using the 40% off coupon) and put the whole thing in there and add some more curling ribbon to the top and tie it closed.
And I would also add to do up a "Receipe Card" with the contents of the cake. Punch a hole through it, keep it held through the ribbon at top.
The last tip I want to give is if you have a budgeted amount, be careful not to go over it. It is so easy to do with a diaper cake. All of those little things add up. I do try to find and buy some things off of the receipent's baby gift registry but I do try to find things like rattles, pacifiers, washclothes, shampoos, soap, onesies, J & J travel pack (use $1 coupon), Balmex (SWM, use $2 coupon), ribbon, and receiving blankets on sale and/or use coupons and keep in the gift closet to use till the next cake. The extras plus the cost of diapers do add up!
Hope this helps,
