I have never had the nerve to make these - but I thought the sticks were lollipop sticks? If so, Hobby Lobby will have them over by cake decorating stuff and you can use a 40% off coupon which should make them reasonalbe!
Good luck!!
My niece and I are going to be making cake pops. They looked like fun to decorate and eat. I haven't found any reasonably inexpensive sticks to use for them. Does anybody know where to find them? Kohls sells them but they are expensive. Would love to hear from anybody who has made these and has any little tricks.
Heard if you dip the stick in melted chocolate and them insert it into the cake pop, it will harden and be more secure on the stick???

What a mess!!! I am never going to make cake pops again. Thought it would be a fun project for my 10 year old niece and I, boy was I mistaken. I did research on line and followed the recipe, sounded so simple. The cake pops break and fall off the sticks so easily. I had a counter and floor full of chocolate, cake, and sprinkles. We had some that turned out good but so not worth the time and trouble. In the end, we were so frustrated with breaking cake, we used the large marshmellows. They turned out really good. Coated them with chocolate and nuts. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!!

Yep. I like to think I'm pretty crafty...but cake pops kicked my hiney, too. They really are hard! I had a magazine article and I followed the instructions. I had no idea they would be such a pain! I still have a couple dozen in the freezer. We made 10 the first time at Halloween. Tried again on Black Friday. Gave UP!!! I ended up just dipping them into the black chocolate and handing them to the kids on a napkin the second time we made them. The kids were all..."Where are the sticks?" I gave them the stink eye and they decided to eat them without.
Don't know if I am even going to mess with them for Valentines! The rest may end up in the garbage can.
I made cake balls (cake pops minus the lolipop stick) just over a year ago for a family Christmas get together. I thought it would be cute - like Christmas balls since I was using red and green candy melts. I went the easy route and just made 2 box cake mixes and then went over my moms the next day to shred down the cake and mix it with the icing and dip it in the candy melts. After 2-3 hours we finally had them all done.
We show up to the party and a decent amount of people (including some kids!!) really didn't like them (I think the one combination of cake and icing we used was really sweet and if people got that one first they wouldn't taste the others). In the end the consensus was we should have just left the cakes whole and put the icing on it so we wasted 2-3 hours turning what everyone would have liked into something only half of the people liked
I moved to jell-o shots for the next family party and they have been a huge success and earned my respect back (though I still threaten my one uncle that I am going to make more cake balls!)
aimeebee - good luck if you try them for Valentines day!! If I recall - we put the cake balls on either parchment paper or wax paper for the candy melts to harden and they hardened pretty quick. So if your issue is just the "stick" (and not people not liking them) that may be something easier you can try.

I had the same problem the one time I've tried them so far. Found out later that I missed a step and didn't put then in the freezer first before trying to coat them.

Ok, for Christmas I made the small single bite size ones and dipped them in melted Nestle Morsels (semi-sweet as the icing in the cake mix to form the balls was sweet enough).
BUT, I would HIGHLY recommend putting the cake/icing mix into the fridge to chill before shaping the balls because it's very sticky and messy. Letting it chill some makes shaping much easier and less sticky. (still, wear gloves!)
And just before inserting the sticks, dip them in the melted chocolate then insert then put in the fridge to let that harden a couple minutes (again) before dipping the ball in the melted chocolate and putting them on wax paper to harden. You can also add a half bar of canning jar wax to one full package of semi-sweet chocolate pieces as you're melting them, it allows the chocolate to set up quicker and is safe for eating and not "waxy".
Good luck!
