Thank you all for your help. I'm going to start with a small blanket for practice in nice bright colors. Goal is work my way up to some of those fancy schmancy afghans!

I was just looking at their ad and they seem to have some yarn for under $2.

You will enjoy loom knitting! I made hats and slippers for soldiers, made Christmas stocking for dh's unit the first time he was in Iraq. I got the Knifty Knitter round looms and love them. I have a fancy one that does afghans (got it for Christmas a few years ago) but haven't got the hang of it. Haven't really TRIED much on it yet, just no time right now. Can't wait until i have time for it again.

I LOVE to crochet!!! I take it with me everywhere I go. There is something about all those colors and textures that just makes me want to make them into something. I started when I was 8yrs with a small baby cover and have worked my way up to making clothing. In fact right now I am crocheting a dress for my 5yr old daughter. I started out with Red Heart yarns, but I really like the Baby Bee yarns from Hobby Lobby and not just for baby covers. The Red Heart website has a lot of free patterns too you might look there for some.

I've had these bookmarked forever. Maybe they will help you too: Beginner Crochet -- Crochet for Beginners

I found this helpful to print out and have nearby. They have a left-handed version too if you're a leftie (like me): Crochet Guild of America

I suggest you start with something square and easy. If you get some cotton yarn (like Sugar n Cream) you can try a simple dishcloth. The one I like is just fourteen rows of double-crochet stitches, 28 stitches per row. These also make great gifts. I have people who love to receive them!
