CHAT Using embroidery floss for crocheting?

I have a project that I want to do sometime in the near future that calls for gold trim but I have not been able to find size 10 gold crochet thread; all of the local craft stores have been downsizing. I know that I could probably find it on the internet but then I would have shipping & handling charges and my frugal hobby could quickly become an expensive one. But I past through the cross stitch & embroidery floss isle at Hobby Lobby the other day as I was leaving when gold caught my eye. I was amazed at not only the gold and other metallics but the huge variety of other pretty colors not available in crochet threads. I compared an unseparated floss strand to a strand of crochet thread and couldn’t tell much difference. So why can’t I use floss for crocheting? I realize it would get expensive if I tried to do a whole project with it, but shouldn’t it work for just a little trim? Has anyone ever tried this?

My first thought is that embroidery floss isn't as strong as crochet thread. And the metallic might be even more fragile.
I guess it depends on the usage of what you're making.

I've never done it, but I would think it would be a pain to join the pieces of floss together to make one continuous string! You could maybe try a little test swatch to see how it works?

It's been a long time now, but I used to crochet with thread quite a lot. The twist on crochet thread is much tighter than it is with embroidery thread. And you might find that metallics crack and flake after being pulled through loops as you stitch. If you can't find actual metallic crochet thread (which I think was just metallic thread blended with cotton for strength), you might try blending it yourself by adding metallic floss to a similar color cotton thread and crocheting with them together as one thread. If you live in an area with an active Freecycle or Craigslist, you might try posting to see if anyone has old crochet threads they no longer want. I've received quite a few balls of thread over the years from people who were finding homes for items from elderly moms, aunts, etc who had passed away. They were happy that the threads were going to someone who would use them and appreciate them. You might find the same thing. There certainly were a lot more colors years ago.
