QUESTION What's the stuff in snow globes?

I have an idea for a craft, making snow globes. I made them a long time ago, for a Welcome Baby program at my library. We got little blue and pink teddy bears, glued them to the lids of baby food jars. Added water and some kind of snowy stuff. Glued the lid on, inverted it and a snow globe. They were great.

Now I want to make them again, but I don't remember what I used for the snow. The lady at Michaels had no idea.

And I'm trying to find some kind of little animals/critters to glue onto the lids. No pink and blue teddy bears. Where to find a bag of little critters? I checked some dollar stores, and Michaels. Still need to check AC Moore.

but the snow is my problem. What could I use?

    thanks.

Irridescent (sp?) glitter. (You can also use eggshells, but hard-boil them first and remove that slimy skin off of them, or they'll be "floaters"). Of course the hardest part of a snow globe is making the glitter fall slowly, which can be accomplished by using mineral oil OR a combination of dish detergent and glycerin-but the glycerin must go in first.

So add a bit of glycerin to the water before adding the glitter?

I wanted to suggest a source for "critters." Try eBay and search for vending toys (the stuff in gum balls/vending machines). There are tons of different things available.

I am surprised that Michaels no longer has the teddy bears. I thought those were a 'staple' in crafting. I have seen those at yard sales for super cheap if that helps.

    What a wonderful craft idea!

When my dd and I made I spy bags, we found mason jars of trinkets at the antique shops.

Good luck with the snow globes and let us know how they turned out.
