It looked like a suitcase turned into a filing system for coupons. Neat system.
I could never save as much as they do as or stores won't double coupons. :(
Funny thing is that same news article was played here locally. Even though our local anchor person did the article it was word for word exactly as the one on your news link..lol.

That's pretty typical. The news story we were in this last fall aired on 75 stations around the country and it was pretty much word for word - there's a script that goes along with the video footage for the local anchor to read.

We don't have much in the way of double coupons in Oregon - like $2 or $4 per grocery trip is the total value.

That organizer looked like an old fashion hard briefcase, Salvation Army has lots of them for very cheap. inserts can be made from photo organizers, arrange few inside, just pick right sizes from Staples clearance or dollar stores.
Overall their advice is more to our style of shopping from anything I've seen so far, no "buy generic to save" type of suggestions.. LOL

This was filmed at the South Commercial Safeway in Salem, Oregon. I was the other person in the video. I'm Barb. Luana has the large coupon box. I should add that she has two. One for food items and one for non-food items. I don't lug all my coupons around like that. I just take what I intend to use.

Luana and her sister keep the food pantry at her sister's church stocked. That's why she buys so much stuff.

It was filmed during the Savings Rally. In Oregon, we are limited to four double coupons per trip, up to a maximum of $.50 each.

I rolled my previous $20 SR coupon and used a Kraft $2 catalina and a couple of $1 Glad catalinas to get my balance down that low. The news people wanted the total to be low so we planned that trip very carefully to make it work out that way.

Luana's $150 in savings wasn't from WAGS. It was from rolling her $20 SR catalina on the Rice A Roni. They were $25 for 25 of them - $20 SR catalina - several $.50 off one coupons - $2 double coupons. She had a profit for every transaction and had to buy other items to eat up the difference. She was ending up around $13 profit on each transaction. She bought meat with the difference because it's one thing you don't normally get for free.

I think the folks on this board are way more advanced than the Supersavers group and I appreciate you all very much. I've learned so much here.

The Supersavers group was meant for the stores in Salem Oregon although they will work elsewhere if the same stores exist. HCW has far more posts and better deals than our board. Most of our members aren't interested in doing "power" couponing, they just want to learn to save more money.

A couple of other interesting things I forgot to mention...

They filmed us for about an hour. Isn't it amazing how little gets used out of all that?

As mentioned in previous posts, the anchor person introducing the story wasn't at the store at all. A Field Producer and a Camera Person came out. They were not in any of the shots. They told us that they do all the work and someone else gets all the glory.

My 12y DD came with me on this shopping expedition (as she does on most). She was too shy to be on camera. She's been wondering if I'm going to get stopped in the aisles and asked for my autograph. Not likely!! However, the jokesters at work have been bugging me for my autograph.

This is so cool. Thanks for the link to the organizer. I was just telling DH that I need another organizer. I am still using the beginner style coupon holder. I have 3 now and I can't even close one because there are so many coupons in it. I had to take out one catagory today because I was worried it would spill while I took it out with me.

Hi Barb! Didn't see your post until after mine - LOL

Hi Julie! It was great chatting with you the other day!!!

I am very new to this group, but for myself, find this group WAY more advanced in their/your savings. Our Yahoo Group is great for new people and hopefully it grows and helps others to save money, but I find I learn alot more from this group. You all ROCK!!!

One thing I wanted to mention about the coupon organizer I have, it has a nice side area for a mini calculator & pen. They say it is for a checkbook/credit card, but honestly, I prefer my debit card to be in my pocket.... I don't suggest leaving it in the cart with my coupons. If you want pictures of it, just let me know :)

IF you buy a coupon organizer, DO NOT just buy one that is up for auction. They have a 1-800 # to call, so call them and chat, you'll get a better deal. They are very nice people, I think his name was Bill (?) They will use your material if you send it to them, I just got a pure black one and then a Coke designed one. (Sorry Pepsi) They didn't have a Pepsi option :(.... But I got different materials because I can tell which one is which without opening it.

Another hint: If you don't/can't buy 2 right now, try to go together with a friend so you both can share in the savings.

Also, I made my own labels. They have a numbering system, which I am sure works fine, but for me, my tabs were easier.... I also took some plastic pouches, cut them and seal-a-mealed them to the size I wanted, then used a hot glue gun to put them on the inside of my lid. This has been SOOOOO helpful to me!!

Barb is correct, my sister and I donate almost everything we get to my sister's church. We also are part of a church network in the area that helps families in crisis situations. We also adopt 10+ families a year during the holodays and stock their cupboards with food on top of giving gifts for the family & children. We love doing it and feel really blessed to have the knowledge that allows us to have this ability.

As Barb stated, my savings was pure profit from the coupons I used at Safeway. The first week of the savings rally I focused all my extra savings towards London Broil ($1.99 lb) & Chicken Breast ($1.49 lb). I stocked my freezer with about 40 lbs of London Broil and 20 lbs of Chicken Breast. I also bought produce and such that we never get much of a discount on.

I just got home from a Safeway and here is what I got:
1 Box Total Raisin Bran$3
7 Bags Flat Earth Chips 2/$5
2 Box Quaker Life $6
2 Box Quaker Cinn Life $6
4 Box Honey Bunches Oats $8.00
1 Vitamin Water $1
4 Pillsbury Pie Crusts 4/$10
8 Bertolli Dinners $39.92 (@$4.99 ea)
2 Windex Antibacterial $3.99

After all coupons and catalina's at the register I paid $5.11 and got 2 free movie tickets :)

I love couponing :)

Thanks for your support everyone! I am really glad I found this group!

We've already been overwhelmed with new members. The story ran for the first time at 11:00 pm 2/27/08. At that point we had about 493 members. We now have 1,033 and more come on board every day.

Man.

Apparently I need to drive in to Raleigh to go to Safeway! :D

I saw that organizer on eBay awhile back - I just can't bite the bullet and pay for it. Although I love that you can send them material to have it in the fabric you want. I've tried everything for organizers - photo protector pages, baseball card pages, envelopes, regular coupon organizers, ugh I can't find anything I like.

Right now I use a zippered trapper keeper and keep all coupons organized by type, each type within a zipper pencil pouch.

I thought the same thing at first, but I am so happy I bought it.... Before this I had a 3" zippered binder (from Office Depot) and took heavy duty page protectors,, using my seal-a-meal (don't laugh) sealed the top, then marked and sealed the page into thirds, THEN, cut the side open. Then I labeled the sides. When I took it shopping I set it in the kids seat, unzipped it with that side up and had my instant filing cabinet with me... Hope this makes sense :hectic1:.

I can try to take a picture of that one if you like...

But I can honestly say, after making the switch to this organizer (from eBay), I could not go back!!! The one I made was great, but got "fat" in the middle, and was SOOO hard to close.... It was heavy and a pain to pack in, and a REAL pain to zip back up before I left the store.... This one is admired by the checkers, and others in the store. It actually seems to give me credibility (funny huh!).... It has a nice carry handle and is very easy to use.....

And in case you are wondering (because I sound like a commercial - lol) NO I don't know the seller's on eBay, actually my sister found the organizer, bought one, then told me about it....

If you don't want to put the $$ out for that one, you might try the one I made.... I have tried ALLLLLL kinds, and that WAS my favorite, before this one :)....

Good luck, and if you need pictures of my 3" one, please let me know, I'd be happy to help a fellow couponer :BigHand:.

I just knew that was the one. I'm going to have to find a local couponer to buy one with me to save a bit. I'd love to have one and have been stalking their "older" auctions and trying to decide if velcro versus a clip is a big difference.

The other half of my brain is telling me to borrow a sewing machine and make my own.

Go with the clip if you can. The velcro doesn't stay nearly as good. Plus "IF" you were to drop it - AHHHHHH UGH!!!

Trust me on how I know this (lol)..... Clip is WAY better and is what I have now :)

When I saw that coupon organizer I immediately thought of those old cassette tape organizers that everyone used to keep in thier cars. We even have a case like that with my DH old 8-tracks that he refuses to throw out:hysterical:. Then I started thinking it looks like a Matchbox Car case that little boys get for the gazillions cars. I bet some of you real thrifty and crafty types could find a case like that at a yard sale/thrift store/flea market/back of husband's closet and commandeer it for your own coupon organizer at a fraction of the price.

:wow77: I just saw the footage, and unless I'm mistaken one of the ladies was also using the binder method {which of course is my favorite} I have three, one for non-foods, one for shelf foods and one for cold & frozen foods. I have even started up a couple of smaller ones for ind. stores like Publix folder, and CVS folder. I keep all my binders in a basket that I have no idea where I got it from but it works great and is very portable. Yes, I usually take 2 or 3 binders into certain stores, but I want to be ready for anything.

Different methods work for different people. I sure owe a lot to Clarkestep for teaching me the binder method. It has been a life and money saver.

I have the one from refund cents, it is hard plastic. Doesn't really sit in the seat of buggy that well, and won't stay open. It works but don't work that well for me. I can't seem to find anything that I love.
So lately I go through and pick out what I am going to use and only take that along with me. I don't like that either.

I've only been cutting coupons for a couple of weeks. I've already outgrown 2 binders. I spend ALL DAY Sunday cutting, sorting, folding, blah blah blah you know the routine. I can't do it every weekend. I'm thinking of switching to the case this woman in the video has. I like that it looks like a tote instead of a HUGE binder. Has anyone bought one? I like the idea of not spending so much time putting coupons into plastic sheets. I can then go alphabetical. Any thoughts?

momgenet
03-31-2008, 06:32:29 AM
I know that a lot of people like the binder method . . . . .personally . . . .it drove me nuts! To much upkeep. I go small scale for now, I use two 4 by 6 card file boxes. But I would go for the tote over a binder.
You can do them alphabetical, but I arrange mine by the isles of the grocery store . . . .broad catagories, like frozen meals, canned fuits, dairy case, etc
To each thier own!!!!
Really liked this news piece!!!
Yeah to you ladies!

Just ordered the coupon box!!! WOW, I love the box /envie way of doing things, it just never occurred to me to use a real box?! My husband saw the clip with me and said, 'You saved more than the cost of that in your last trip!! Get it!!!', then he repeated himself until I did it. I'm so cheap......I mean frugal. Anyway, this going to be more exciting than waiting for a Tide free sample! Way to go gals! It's nice to see people getting the spotlight for savings. Sure beats all the negative news stories, and now other families can benefit too. Good job!

Great!! Loved that organizer as well. As others have stated, good, but already knew all their tips from communicating with everyone here. Is nice though that someone has noticed people like us and complimenting how we save, instead of some harsh comment.

Ok last question!! If any of you were to buy this case would you buy 1 or 2? I was thinking of 2 for food/non food so I wouldn't have to bring the one big one into CVS or the smaller stores. What do you think? Before I became so frugal I would have bought 2 with no problem!! Now I can't question everything I buy!!!! I'll never go back!!!

Why don't you take food coupons into CVS?? I don't usually use them there, but I have gotten free/near food before from CVS. They cleared out a bunch of Pringles one time and I had $.30 off, got them all for under $.25 each. I've done deals on soup and cereal there too. You just never know with CVS....

Leann, hopefully your CVS keeps their food aisle fresher than mine! I bought some SoftBatch cookies when they were on sale (several months and ads ago, haha!) and they were WAY expired when I bought them. ALWAYS check the expiration dates on their foods, Ive read other users complaining too!

Hi Girls!!!

I am the one in the video, my name is Luana Parker and I love my organizer!!! I have had it for about 3 months now and I actually have 2 of them, one for food, and one for non-food items. I just ordered a 3rd one because I have an over abundance of coupons for medicine, vitamin stuff!! I am not normal - LOL I actually coupon a lot for charity, so for a normal family I would suggest 2, one for food, one for non-food items....

Do not get the ones that velcro, get the clip closures. I do not use their suggested format for filing (a numbers system) instead, I use my way, air fresheners, baking mixes, baking misc, cereal GM, cereal Pots, etc....... Make it your own and whatever schematic of filing works for you, don't change that....

I leave for vacation today, but am online alot and I will try to answer questions if I can.

Happy couponing!!

Luana

I loved the piece on the news about you and your friend. Especially when you said you sometimes make money shopping!!! I look at it this way, if I get as good as you ladies, that’s how I can justify to my husband not going back to work!!! I've been going back and forth with this organizer. I emailed the store today I think I'm going to get the largest one with the clip. I like the binder I have, but it is so labor intensive I know I'll start losing motivation. This looks like a tote/purse and the lid stays open. Have a wonderful vacation. I just got back. But how sick is this, I couldn't wait to get back to couponing!!

I got my organizer this week!! I really like it. I thought the filing system they use was crazy, so I covered it with 2 rectangular tyvek envies cut to fit. I notched them with a 'V' in the front and BAM! One is for coupons I'm using during that trip, the other is for coupons I grab/find and need to sort. I'm using the little envies they already had there for coupons for Free items so I don't forget them. It is a good system. We shook it around and dropped it and none of the coupons moved.

If you buy 2, you get $10 off. I use one for my Grocery & one for NON grocery items :)

happy Couponing ALL!

Luana
By the way, the other gal on the video was Barb Parker & she is the owner of our local Yahoo group :)

That is a nice organizer but I cringe at spending $39 for it plus shipping. Shouldn't be too hard to make my own.

After I dropped mine earlier this week and dumped everything out, I have almost finished putting it back together. I found the numbers on the divider cards hard to see, so I cut the divider cards down and added self-adhesive index tabs. I also devised my own filing system so I don't have to refer to their spreadsheet in the top of the box. I am not finished filing the loose coupons, but have made a good start.

I really like this organizer. I used to sort my coupons into photo boxes and then put into my binder. Since I got the organizer, I just clip and sort into the organizer as I go.

I heard about this guy Riff Parker who is also a member here on HCW and how he has videos on Youtube. This is where I got this idea, thanks Riff!!!! Basically he puts all the same pages of the inserts together, staples the coupon through the picture and then cuts them up. They drop like little coupon packages!!!!! SO EASY!! I put them in the organizer if you drop the organizer they always stay together. You always know what you have. Just keep a staple remover in the box. Here is the link
