We're Army here. Hubby went to WP and has been in 17 years. We don't have any commissaries near us, but we always poke in whenever we are passing a town that has one. We do take advantage of the MWR office and the cheap tix that they have. And on Army.com, there is some good info about traveling and the discounted condos and such.

What naval base is your hubby at?? Mine is up for orders in oct. and we are desperately trying to find a base in a location we can both enjoy. In addition to trying to be close to my family, the only other criteria i've told him is the grocery stores must double lol.

Husband is retired Navy, retired Boeing and just plain retired. I retired 10 years ago from Civil Service. We are in Oak Harbor, Wa. (A great place to retire) Husband was stationed here in Oak Harbor at NAS Whidbey Island.
Went to the Commissary today but didn't find to many new deals. Was told the new sale will start on Tuesday. (We are closed on Mondays)

Hubby and I were having a conversation about the commissary, and he said a while back that there was a law passed that limited the ability of the commissary to compete with off-post stores, so the deals there aren't near as good as they were in the past. He said some of the sales were just amazing. When we were at Ft. Benning, I never saw these deals - I could always do better at Publix than I could on post. And since there isn't one around us (that and I can never find my ID card) I just never shop in there.

DH is Army reserves but is currently on active duty as a drill sgt at Ft. Benning. The kids and I just got back from spending a month with him. While there I found a couple of deals at the commissary but not a lot. I actually like the PX more. I have bought a couple of high end items (flat screen TV, camcorder) that the saving on tax alone is worth it.

My husband is retired Navy and we live in Georgia, south side of Atlanta. I am a SAHM right now after having (I'm sure many of you understand) about a hundred jobs. My son is leaving this week for college which leaves just my baby (16) daughter at home. I told her not to worry I will be able to give her 100% of my attention now. Needless to say she is thrilled.

I discovered coupons (stockpiling) about 2 years ago and it was a life saver. I had major back surgery and we lived off of that until I got everyone trained enough to do some shopping for me. I am hoping to have passed on some of it to my son that he will be able to use at college. My daughter is my shopping buddy and loves coupons almost as much as I do. She tells all of her friends and even tries to talk all of the mom's into how great they are and how much you can save your family using them.:cheerleader:

Welcome to the board! We have some great military families on the board. PMsFan is really good at posting commissary deals and keeping us up to date on the cheap items we need to get from there.

I am pretty sure we have other NC members on the board, so you might even think about posting to see who they are, and I know we have members who get together to shop.

Start reading through the couponing 101 threads - that's a good starting place.

And watch for things like RAOK that come up where people will start you off with some coupons, or there's contests you can try to win envelopes of coupons or prizes.

We'll be having another referral contest and Fridays are Fun Fridays between now and the end of september where you can win a prize just for posting in the Fun Friday thread for that week!

So welcome, and glad you are on your way to saving money!!!

Hi my name is Tara, and I am new to the site. My husband is in the Air Force and we are stationed in England, at RAF Mildenhall. We of course shop at the commissary. I will admit that I am not a big fan of our (RAF Lakenheath) as they don't follow the sales. Everytime I go I grab the sale ads, but when it comes time to check out it's never on sale. I inquire and I am told that either, since we are overseas they don't have to follow the sales (eventhough the sales ads says Overseas edition) or that the manager decides what goes on sale not DECA. I emailed DECA about this, and never got a response. Whatever the case may be though, I do get good deals a good majority of the time I go.

Me too. Plus I am PCSing in a few days and we will be going from 2 incomes to 1. So until I can find another job (and I want to be picky with what I take) I have to find a way to live on less. So couponing seemed like a good thing to do.

Hi,

I'm Becky. This is my husband's first military assignment, so we are learning a lot. Looking for good deals at the commissary. Friends and family are sending me their unwanted coupons. We're at Schofield Barracks, HI. Prices off post aren't good at all, so the commissary is going to be my main source for shopping.

I have two girls, 3 1/2, 1 1/2, and one more girl due in 10 weeks.

Looking forward to learning what I can about saving $$$ the military way.

Hi! My husband is in the Army Reserves, was active duty a few years ago. He's been in for longer than I've known him. :)

I'm just getting into couponing and haven't been to the commissary yet. I can't wait to see if I can find some good deals.

We're in Virginia and near Ft. Belvoir, so I'm hoping to find some good stuff there. I know they take internet coupons, so I'm very happy about that!

I'm from Vegas. Lived there from about 5 years old until 20 years old. Dh used to work at the 25 Club, directly across from the main gate at Nellis (I think its a casino now...or the parking lot of a casino). Anyway, thats why he joined the AF. He'd go to work (cook) & all of the military guys would tell him its a dead end job & he should join the AF. After 2 years, he did:-) Best decision we ever made. Went in as a jet engine mechanic, finished up his 20 as a Network Administrator with background in network security:-)

Hi Ladies!!
I am new here too!

We are AF at Little Rock AFB. I am from GA...Clayton County, near Ft. Gilem. I was born at Ft. Benning!! I see that a couple of you here know the places I am talking about. We have been stationed at Spangdahlem AB in Germany and at Luke AFB in Phoenix, AZ. After this base, I hope we go back to USAFE.

Anyway, I have been couponing forever. I am glad I found this thread. The base is about 30 minutes from me so this way I know what to look for on the rare occasion that I go.

Thanks and I will contribute when I find something!

Hello! I'm a newbie all around: new to this board, new to couponing, and (relatively) new to the Navy life (DH and I married 10 months ago).

We just PCS to Jacksonville, FL (Anyone else from there?) and I've found the commissary to have pretty good deals.

Although I just started couponing, I've already had some great trips to CVS/Walgreens and saved a bunch of money. There's still a LOT more to learn though!

Welcome ktmarvels! I'm a Navy wife, too... but currently living in MA (75 minutes from the nearest commissaries at Hanscom AFB and Groton/New London sub base) while dh is IA in Afgh. My name is Holly and my husband is active duty AF at Buckley in Colorado. We should be here another year or two. We have a larger family so we appreciate all the deals we can find.

I recently found this board and am happy to have a place where we can post commissary finds. I follow the sale ads pretty closely and find that what is supposed to be on sale versus what is varies as well as the dates (e.g., sale should go through a certain date but it ends early at my commissary).

Hi, all. I'm faily new to HCW. My husband just retired, 30 Sept. He was a pilot. We have a commissary here, in PA, but it's TINY (it's mostly for retirees and reserve folks) - not much variety, compared to Norfolk, our last duty station. What a nice Com that was! I wasn't into couponing much then, so ... I have a question for you-all, but I'll ask in another topic.

HI!
My DH is Navy & 100% SC Disabled. We live in a remote town in WA State and are lucky enough to have lots of bases. Unfortunately, they are all at least 2 hours drive from where we live, but we try to do a once a month big shopping.

Sometimes it has seemed like we actually spend more at the base. My coupons usually only cover the cost of the extra 5%.

I used to be an avid couponer when we lived in Southern CA and miss being able to stockpile. No double coupons here!

I'm so glad to have found this site!

Hi. Hubby is active duty army. We are in San Antonio now, which is nowhere near Shreveport so you (forgot your id) must be in East Texas!. I grew up in the Shreveport area and was born at Barksdale, back when they had a hospital and were larger. I do not like San Antonio. We were at Ft. Campbell, Ky before and it was nice. We lived there when the tornado demolished down town. I heard it go right over our house and hit others down the road, and ruined our church. We moved shortly afterwards so it must all look much nicer now that it is rebuilt. The commissary there back then was very anti-coupon though. Hope that has changed.

Hi and welcome. I live at Tyler. Barksdale is very coupon friendly now. Just this past week, I used 93 coupons for 94 products. The cashier didn't blink an eye and was very excited by my total. I paid more in the surcharge than I did in actual groceries.

I think the older guy behind me was even more excited. He kept crowding me so he could see the total go down. He was in uniform, but since dh was marine, I don't know the AF ranks. He likes coupons and wanted to know all bout them.

I don't like S.A. either. Went down when my neice was born and after a few day, I was ready to come home. I love east texas.

Hi! We're a Navy family, stationed in Norfolk, VA. I'm glad I found this thread! I have never shopped at the commissary... I was looking at thier sale paper one day & saw some good deals that I could get with my coupons, so I called to make sure I could use coupons on sale items. The person who answered the phone didn't seem to speak good english and she told me that they do not accept coupons period. So I just assumed it was because there is no tax or something & never went there. Maybe I will have to check it out now that I know I can use coupons!

welcome to HCW !

there are deals to be had at off base retail stores also - target, WM, kmart, CVS, walgreens, rite aid, etc. there is a forum dedicated to each of those here.

my best advice to newbies is to read, read, and read some more :)

Suggested reading:

New to Hot Coupon World? Start here (http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/new-hot-coupon-world-start-here/) - all the sticky threads
you may want to introduce yourself here (optional): The Welcome Wagon (http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/welcome-wagon/)
FAQs - see store forums for stores in your area

also, check the commissary December and recurring deals threads.
you'll soon find there are many deals both on and off base.

once you have a grasp of the couponing way of life, a 15 minute drive may be well worth it if the store(s) is/are having triples or other great deals to stock up on.

Hi everyone. I'm Amy, a Navy wife, and we're stationed in Maine. I'm used to very large commissaries, but ours here is tiny. It generally has the basics of what we need, though.

I'm new to couponing, and I've found a few great deals from this board. Thank you! I think the thing that confuses me is that *most* of the time, it seems less expensive to buy something at the commissary than to buy it on sale with double coupons at our local grocery store. The prices at the store are so high. When I check the discounted produce or meat, it's still way more than commissary prices. The packaged foods in the center aisles are twice as much!

Do you all find the same thing? Do you do most of your shopping at the commissary? If so, do you still find that couponing drastically reduces your food budget?

Sorry for the tome!:wink7: I'm glad to be here.

Curlybwc

I think you're right, but it depends a lot on where you live - when we were stationed in CA, we could get a ton of stuff off base for free or even have them pay us after rebates. In MO, not so much, but there's still the occaisional great deal/free item. Most of the time, though, the commissary is a lot cheaper, especially when you use your coupons there! Welcome to the board! You will find a lot of great commissary copon deals too.

CVS is also a great place to get freebies - even if it's stuff you don't need, eventually an ECB deal will come along of things you can use and you'll be glad to have the ECB from previous deals to stock up. deals can be $ makers by combining ECB w/ manf coupons.
rite aid has a very good rebate program. as with CVS, deals can be $ makers by combining ECB w/ manf coupons.
walmart - free trial size things w/ coupons. also other frees (recently - cat food & cereal)
target - free trial size items w/ coupons. printable target coupons result in great deals; though, again, i don't have time to follow/take advantage of these. i've read about great clearance finds too.

that said, i do most of my GROCERY shopping on base as i don't have the time to follow all the catalina and sales. i use the coupons giving overage on base to reduce my total. most weeks i save 80% or more. of course this means i buy lots of things i do not need; however, they end up being donated.
Hi everyone. I'm Amy, a Navy wife, and we're stationed in Maine.

Welcome and glad you decided to register! You already know this is a great site for finding deals !

Hello Everyone, I have been a lurker since they site opened. I kinda stumbled over when the originators left the other coupon site. I didn't think I could handle looking at another board. Anywho, I got tired of not being able to comment on posts so I finally decided to register.

Now, about me. I'm a mother of 4 & wife of 13 yrs to my Army husband. We are currently stationed in Ft. Leavenworth, KS. I've always been into saving money and finding deals. And can't wait to talk more deals:BigHand:

Hello all! My name is Tina and I am in the army reserves. But my husband is a full timer in the army. We are currently at Fort Bliss, Texas. I love this site and visit all the time. But hate my commissary cause of how they handle me and my coupons. If anyone has any advice on getting the place to except overage I would love it cause nobody in the store is listening and thinks I am trying to commit fraud. Very rude in general. I guess what I am trying to say is HELP!!!

hi there. glad you like the site!

i always have the directive with me in my purse so if a cashier gives me a hard time, i pull it out or ask for the director or on duty manager by name (if i know them). i also have a printed email from my store director verifying overage is the deca policy.

if you've not talked to the store director, i would suggest going to commissaries.com and click on your commissary page. on that page under store information is the name and email address of your store's director. email him/her to inquire about deca coupon policy. reference the deca directive which does allow the full coupon value if the value exceeds the item price. the policy is a sticky here at HCW on the main commissary page.

if the director replies to you that yes, deca policy *IS* to give overage, print that email and also carry that with you when you shop there along with the deca policy.

if the director does not agree that deca allows overage, contact deca via the commissaries.com website to express your concern/experience with your store not following deca directive. in my experience, deca is pretty quick to respond to customer inquiries.

let us know what happens !

Hi! Thought I'd introduce myself. My husband is active duty Navy and we are headed to an overseas duty station soon. We have a dog, but no kids yet. We eat a lot of natural and organic products as well as a TON of produce, so it seems like we are always spending money on food! We also use a lot of earth-friendly products (cleaning supplies, etc.). We may have to be flexible about some of these things overseas, though! Right now, we're trying to clear out our pantry but I'm excited to start stockpiling once we move. The overseas coupon policies will definitely make it easier!

Hi:wavehi:, I'm new to HCW and just found this thread. Hoping to find out how to save at the commissary. We are both retired Army and I've gotten so frustrated at our local commissary (small to med). Often prices are more than "on the economy". We buy organic milk and after the surcharge is added it would be .89 more than elsewhere.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing how others do it.

Alright.....here is my newbie question:

Is there a preferred q sales site? I feel bad bidding for some of the q's on ebay.....because all I am doing is raising the prices for the rest of you all. I know that you probably can't endorse a site on the board, but please feel free to PM one if you know it

Wife of a retired Navy CWO (22 years), living in Chesapeake, VA. We have 4 commissaries, but they are all at least 20 miles from me, which means I better be buying a LOT to make it worth the gas. If only I could get the ads before I went, I could really maximize my coupons there.

I've used coupons for years, but not THIS well! So far I have a great stockpile of toiletries and cleaning supplies, but not much $$ saved on actual food. I understand there is about a 12-week cycle, so I'm sticking with it. Especially with the way prices are skyrocketing!

We are from Luke AFB. Phoenix AZ. Anyone else on here at Luke?

I don't think I introduced myself yet here. I have followed this group since it was on FW. DH is retired Navy and we are in Phoenix and shop Luke. I shop about once a week there for overage on items we don't get on sale elsewhere. But hit the sales in town more often since we have so many good deals here! I love doing the Walgreens deals to make $ and using the RR at Albertsons.
I don't know all the cashiers at this commissary becuase I avoided it the first two years after we moved. They are a little tougher to deal with here, and that made me nervous, as our last duty station before he retired ,the commissary staff was great with coupons and overage! But I'm starting back in with the great KY coupons we've been getting.

I am still absorbing all the info that is on this site and trying to use it at the commissary and the surrounding stores like all of you. I am a bit shy and timid, and do not like confrontation whatsoever, so I am a tad nervous on getting overage on ky and monistat at my commissary. I have redeemed plenty of coupons there, but I usually do not have alot of coupons that would give me overage. If anyone has any experiences, bad or good, at this commissary please let me know, so I can prepare for the best or the worst. I do know to have the DECA policy on me just in case I have a bad encounter with a cashier or management, so thank you for the thread on that! Anywho, thanks for taking the time to read this!

Welcome!

You may have the best of both worlds there in AZ. It seems that the bulks of the "super" coupon deals are in AZ (lots of stores that double). Plus you have commissary privileges, which is a great place to get the rest of your stuff. (My commissaries are all 20 miles or so away, so with today's gas prices I have to be planning a reasonable-sized trip to make it worth the gas.)

Check to see if there are any web sites for the commissary in your area. They can't actually post the sale prices, but CAN post the discount % off the regular price. (I exported ours last month and then just sorted by the highest % off to match my coupons.) Commissaries are limited to marking up goods, so overall, if you don't have coupons you'll find your best deal there. (Except for loss leaders.)

After years of shopping almost exclusively at the commissary, I now do most of my shopping at the most expensive store in town (HT) because they double coupons and I'm actually spending less.

Hi, I'm Marlene. I'm active duty Navy and stationed on beautiful Whidbey Island, WA. I'm a divorced mother of 3 young kids (4, 10, 11) and new homeowner. I found this site in my search to reduce my food bills as much as possible to augment the rising prices of gasoline while accomodating the broad variety of foods my children each enjoy.

Thank you so much for the information posted. Just yesterday after copying the list of June deals and comparing it to my pile of clippings (mostly IP's received through this great site) I saved 58% off my commissary bill ~ $120 down to $50. The boy at the counter was pretty amazed, and I felt my time dedicated to using coupons was validated.

Thank you again, and I pledge to help contribute to the useful current information to keep the good deal train rolling.

Hi everyone...newbie here! We are in Baumholder, Germany and because of the exchange rate the commissary and PX are the only places I shop. I'm so excited to have found this site!

HI everyone! :wavehi:I am a newbie too. I am married to an active duty Navy guy and I mostly shop the commissary in my area. We are at Kitsap Naval Base. I have found that the commissary has the best prices except for loss leaders at the local stores.

Hello again! This is Chickbizz. I was a very active member about 6 months ago when my husband was active duty in Ft. Bliss, TX. We are now in California and my husband is National Guard and drills once a month. Soooo..... we still get commissary privileges, but the nearest base in NAS Lemoore about 45 minutes away. Needless to say, I am only able to go about once a month. We are on an even tighter budget now and I HAVE to get back on the coupon horse!!!

I just got back from northern California and have to admit I have grocery store-envy. If there is a WinCo near you, check them out. I was very surprised to see that their prices are about the same as the commissary (with no sales tax and no surcharge!).

The WinCo here does have good prices, but they DO NOT accept printable coupons which stinks. That's what makes the Commissary better sometimes.

Anyone else here shop at MacDill? Hubby is active duty army, stationed at Hunter AAF in GA but kids and I live here (Tampa Bay area) because of his schedule (just got home from Iraq) and health reasons. Base is about an hour drive for me but would love to go soon. Hoping to get direction from anyone who has recently shopped there as to their policies / coupon friendly / etc.

i do not believe that i have ever introduced myself on here. i joined this board a few months ago but have not been very active. i read a lot more than what i post.
anyways, my husband is in the army and we are stationed at fort buchanan, pr. we have one year old dd, and another on the way!!! we also have a min-pin, buddy.
our commissary is very small and we do not have a lot of items that others have. like everyone else we have the same cashiers who hate coupons, but then some who watch in awe. the only overage i can really take advantage of is ky since there are no other deals like that. i have a feeling the ky days are over though. thank you very much for opening my eyes to that deal though, it has helped tremendously!!!

only because they are starting to put the $2 coupons in the paper now. imo, the company started catching on about the overage. i could be wrong though.

We are temp. stationed at Monterey, CA and there is a small commissary here at Ft Ord, but at least there is one. After 2 years we will be back in Norfolk VA where the commis are bigger and better and I have 4 to choose from.
