PattyC- I can't bake or cook in real life so diaper cakes are the only cakes I make. The link with instructions seem pretty through. The only tips I'd add is that I use big rubber bands to secure the folded diapers. To hide the rubber band that is holding each layer together I use wide ribbon or I'll take some washclothes, onesies, bib, baby blanket, etc to fold over to hide.

I've put in thin wooden dowels carefully (don't get any of those diapers) poked between the 3 cake layers. Seems like everyone wants to pick up the diaper cake and you run the risk of your layers flying away if things are just tucked in together. If you make the dowels just about an inch taller than the highest layer you can put a little stuffed animal on top and tie the legs down by putting ribbon around the dowels to secure. (Did a very cute Winnie the Pooh cake this way. And had a bunch of other W the P items on it as well.)Would work the same for a toy, those dowels are good for securing that on top too.

I like to put lots of curling ribbon on each layer. Just looks festive, and hides the wooden dowels.

If you can't find a cake plate what I've done is put a plate down to make a circle on cardboard. Make same size circles of baby wrapping paper, glue to cover front and back.

I also like to get those big clear basket gift bags from Micheals (using the 40% off coupon) and put the whole thing in there and add some more curling ribbon to the top and tie it closed.

And I would also add to do up a "Receipe Card" with the contents of the cake. Punch a hole through it, keep it held through the ribbon at top.

The last tip I want to give is if you have a budgeted amount, be careful not to go over it. It is so easy to do with a diaper cake. All of those little things add up. I do try to find and buy some things off of the receipent's baby gift registry but I do try to find things like rattles, pacifiers, washclothes, shampoos, soap, onesies, J & J travel pack (use $1 coupon), Balmex (SWM, use $2 coupon), ribbon, and receiving blankets on sale and/or use coupons and keep in the gift closet to use till the next cake. The extras plus the cost of diapers do add up!

Hope this helps,
LUVS

at one of my showers a coworker of mine made the most adorable diaper cake, it was in the shape of an elephant.. I'm looking to see if I can find something like it online but is was tooo cute!!!

ETA: I can't find a flipping thing!! lol I'll look through my pictures and hopefully someone got a picture of it. I can't even remember it completely, but I remember the truck was a rolled up receiving blanket and she used a boatload of scotch tape to hold it all together. The gal that made it recently moved away, but I'll see if I can get her email address and see if she can get me some more info on it.

Do you mean like this?

no, that's not it. The elephant part was created by arranging a baby blanket (possibly 2 of them) The blanket's edge was kind of scallopy so it gave it a nice look for the big ears, and a rubber band held the truck rolled up. You have no idea how annoyed I'm getting that I can't find anything at all like it online. lol

I did find this diaper elephant, but it looks nothing like mine did... I'm still looking, but I gotta go to bed!!!

This at least gives you a visual that you can 'create' an elephant from blankets!!

Oh darn! I can't see any of your pictures except the elephant link. Can you repost the pics of the ones you made?

I think I'm crazy and want to try the elephant. I'm hosting a shower for my best girlfriend and her nursery theme is the Amy Coe elephant in celery green and brown. She would LOVE that elephant "cake".

Thanks for this thread!

I like the one in the picture above. Diaper cakes are adorable but if the mom wants to use the dipes it's really obnoxious to have to unroll/unrubberband 100 diapers.

Diaper cakes have been at every baby shower I have been to lately. They were definitely the talk of the party.

yeah, the rolled diapers are a pain - some don't unroll well... the flat type is great!

I dont really roll my diapers when using them for a cake, but I perfer to make my diaper cakes using receiving blankets. And everything I use in these cakes can be used by the mommy.

Some of the instructions want you to roll and rubberband each, that is just a pain and wasteful. I start with a baby bottle in the middle and then place the diaper next to it and use one big rubber band and just kep going out until it's as big as I want and then when they are all in I take some of the diapers out and put in onesies or socks or other little things like that.

I got a whole bunch of the "baby fisrt Christmas" kits on clearance at Wal-mart last year and none of them are really "Christmas" specific so instead or wrapping the whole thing up, I decorate it with those little ornaments and some ribbon, everyone love them.

Oh, and for transport, I wrap a baby blanket around a board and put the cake on it so nothing comes loose.

I didn't read the other posts, I am too lazy, lol so I'm sorry if I repeated anything.

I am seriously thinking about starting a small business doing these and towel cakes for bridal showers. I am still doing some research on tips to start a business. Any advice from those who did this? I am VERY crafty and have made things such as invitations, centerpieces, party favors, wedding albums, ornaments and even halloween costumes. Last year i put together my daughters winter wonderland Sweet 16 (on a budget of course) and i MADE all the decorations, centerpieces, personalized party favors (clear glass ornaments) and invitations. If i knew how to run my mothers antique sewing machine i probably would have made the dress LOL
Sorry i've been rambling a little but thanks for listening (reading) and any advice i may get.

This is beautiful!! Was this made by some one here or was this from a link?
I want to make one for a shower this month but I have some of the huggies little snugglers to use. I like how the diapers are all white. Any ideas about how to use diapers with designs already on them?

well i finally took a shot at it i had to keep it simple so i only made 1 tier i will have to keep practicing and work my way up to the 3-4 tier cakes anyone know which brand diapers are all white? and which diapers moms prefer to have on their baby?

Each baby is different, so I don't know that you could say one diaper is more preferred than another. There are the Pampers only, the Huggies only, and Luvs only crowds. I don't know of a diaper that is just white. I don't think I've even used a generic that was all white before. Maybe the backs were white though. I've seen diaper cakes with different kinds of colored diapers, and the colors on them don't detract at all. They kind of add to make it more attractive.

I found that the pampersbaby dry and swaddlers are mostly all white you may have to flip the front design to the inner part of the cake. I made a pink and a blue today. If I have time later I will post pictures. I have been working on 3 tier cakes using between 65-70 diapers. I have a shower in a couple of weeks and my sister has a shower this weekend to go too. After the cheap stock up deal at rite aid a few weeks back I have enough stuff to make a few cakes to sell and get what $$ I invested in to my stock pile and shower gifts back and might have a few bucks to boot. I plan to sell my cakes for $30.00 which I think is pretty resonable given what I have seen on diaper cake business prices. ( I just want to add I am not trying to advertise here just thought I would throw out some pointers that may be helpful to any one else.) I have been putting baby wash in the bottoms to help hold them together. Travel pack of wipes in the top tier and a baby wash cloth in the middle to top the washes. I think it is so much fun to make them and really is not that hard.

These are a few that I have done - including the Stork, which I created completely by hand and use as a centerpiece or greeter. I create hanging diapers that he holds in his beak with the baby's name or "Welcome" or whatever the mommy wants on it - she gets to keep it to take home also.

The blue cake was 7 layers counting all the design aspects. The stork is three feet tall.

Unfortunately, getting this going as a business is not easy where I live. Everyone looks at a Diaper Cake and says "Oh, I can make one of those - and save money" and they do, but they do not look anywhere NEAR as nice.

BTW - these images and designs are copyrighted by me.

Amys very cute I love them, the stork is so neat!!
I have been looking to find the nice doliey things to put over my foam board base but I haven't came across anything yet. I like the looks of the ones you are using under your cakes. I plan to check Michaels or other craft stores eventually. Keeping my oop to a minimum.

Thank you - I love the diaper cakes. I used to do standard cake deco until carpal tunnel made it difficult. These are easier, but still makes the CT act up.

I love making Diaper cakes, but I do not make mine out of Diapers. Everything I use on my cakes can be taken apart and used for the baby.

My diapers are to be used, I never heard of a diaper cake and not using the diapers.:giggle2:

I am on the wrong computer to post pictures but I have to say Amy's take the Cake!

PS...I stock up on sales so I have everything ready and on budget when I get an invite.

Oh, I love idea about the towel cakes for a wedding idea. I will have to borrow that with so many people living together before marriage/2nd marriages.
