View Full Version : hscouponmom's savings journal

11-05-2007, 07:21:36 PM
Well, I have enjoyed reading other peoples journals and thought I would start my own.

I am a stay at home homeschool mom from Texas. I have three kids still at home ~ 17 ds, 15 dd, and 10 ds. I also have a 26 dss who comes by for groceries! I am also an author of a history homeschool curriculum. Hmmm...we also have seven dogs.

I have a wonderful hubby who is very supportive of everything from couponing to homeschooling. I think he feels less pressure on him now that I am saving money instead of spending so much of it!

I have been couponing for over a year now and have a nice stockpile on most nonfood things but the food gets eaten up pretty fast.

We are working on becoming debt free. We have not used the credit cards in over a year (except once). Two credit cards and both cars paid off so far.

Well that's probably more than you wanted to know about us.

Hopefully writing this will help me see what $$$ to plan for a whole year starting in January and counting down. I am hoping to do $1,000 for the year  Hey it could happen...:hysterical: okay maybe like $2-3,000 for a year for a family of 5.

Downloaded the Rebate! Rebate! software....I see that it would remind me about my rebates but I could do that without a lot of typing right? I typed in the rebates, will type in when I get the check....okay....couldn't I just do a simple word document that says sent/received? Any rebaters reading this have advice?

What stores do you have, especially the grocery that is giving you all those frees?

11-12-2007, 07:25:34 PM
Well CVS is one of course. I also go to Walgreens, Homeland, Albertsons, Kroger, Tom Thumb, and sometimes but not very often I go to Walmart and Dollar General.

Seems like a lot of frees this week but most of them were the free dog and cat food/treats we got in this week's paper.

Wish it was always that much free stuff, don't you!!!

I have the gift boxes for the 21 families I adopted almost ready. It is mostly health and beauty items but it is one less thing they have to worry about buying. I do have some cleaning and some food products in there too.

Starting in the new year, I will not but anything that I already have stockpiled even if it is .....:frown: free. That will be very hard for me. But you have to understand...I have enough of these items to not buy them for a year: toothpaste, toothbrushes, shave gel, razors, ladies deoderant, hairspray, shampoo/conditioner, makeup, excederin, tylenol, antacids, lotion, woman products for daughter, dusting cloths, laundry detergent, hand soap, cleaners, spray good stuff, pickles, miracle whip, mashed potatoes, bisquick, salad dressing, can soups....hmmm that's all I can think of now....but there is LOTS more that I know I could go a year without buying.

Things I will need within the year:
HBA: guy's gel deoderant, body wash,
Cleaning: toilet cleaner, dishwasher detergent, tp, pt
Food: KETCHUP!!!, canned veggies, can milk, milk, eggs, bread, butter, fresh fruit and veggies
Baby: all baby items as we are having all within two weeks of each other: a boy, then a girl, then a boy AND a girl (TWINS)!!!!

See even if it is free, I still pay tax on it. So if I save those cents, I can use that money I would pay on tax to buy the items I do need.

So that is my resolution. Not to buy anything thing that I do not need (or that I already have stockpiled) for a year. It will be very hard for me to pass up free stuff!!!!:shrug7::hectic1::hysterical:

Okay after xmas, I am going to make a list of stuff to not buy for the whole year...even if free!!! You all will help me stay on strong right??? Is there a support group for free-aholics? oh wait that is here!!!:wavehi:

Okay, I am looking at the new ads for next week and it is looking hard to NOT buy stuff for free!! or better yet, when I can make money on it. I have sooo much excederin BUT it would be free+ next week. I don't need it....

Well, this should be loads of fun!!!:hectic1:

I am going to hold strong though. I don't want to be paying tax on something I don't need this year. It's been fun getting so much stuff for free or more than free, and donating it....but is it really free when I am paying tax on it? Or using my ECB's on it when I could be using that money/ECB on something I really need, even if it does not generate more ecb's. Do I buy something I don't need to roll an ecb so I don't have to pay oop the next week or do I just use that ecb (if it is about to expire) on something I need?? Am I making this tooooo complicated? Do I need to just "get over it"....and just buy what I need. Sure I may not be able to roll that ecb but I will definitely not be wasting it. It's not like I will be spending money willy nilly or anything.

I think I averaged everything right below. Getting on later in the year, I can determine what I am getting low on and that will be okay to buy to keep my stockpile up.

Here is a list of things that I should not have to buy in 2008

pasta sauce
salad dressing
regular pickles
cookie mix
brownie mix
corn bread mix
mashed potatoes
potato side dishes
can chicken
Karo syrup
most crackers
instant oatmeal
snack bars
chex mix
sandwich bags
cleaner spray
dish washer detergent
hand dish washing detergent
laundry detergent
headache medicine
acid indigestion medicine
shaving cream
man deodorant
hair styling products
regular shampoo/conditioner
fabric softener

Things I need to stock up on now:
hot sauce
can milk
a little can corn, peas, green beans, carrots, potatoes
peanut butter
instant coffee
trash bags
sour cream
olive oil
ladies deodorant
dandruff shampoo

Things we will need almost weekly:

fresh fruit
fresh veggies

Wish me luck!!

Categories for new 2008 year

Need stockpile - things I need to bring my stockpile up to max. Most things I try to keep enough for year if possible....OR...I stockpile up to the space I have available for that item.

Need - things I will regularly need...frozen and fresh foods, dog foods, etc.

Free ++ - these have to make money....free above and beyond tax. I am going to keep this category in check. I want to be strong about my "don't buy it even if free" resolution.

Overage - these are the little items you need to buy when your order is in the negative by just a bit. I need to find a more productive item than candy!!!:shrug7::whistle:

Well I think that's it.

Total Spent: $29.91
Total Saved: ? LOTS !!!

Total spent for year 2008: $81.77

02-08-2008, 07:31:37 PM
things have been crazy around here. My total for January was $142.43 for groceries! That's so much better than I thought. I will try to do better at posting here...it's just that I am painting my bedroom, organizing my craft room, homeschooling my kids, etc etc.

03-01-2008, 09:00:45 AM
Well February was just as good....grocery wise. I finished painting my room. My niece had her twins early (and they are beautiful and gorgeous!!!).

I just don't seem to have time to post details on here right now.

I will do my best.

Cvs last week spent $2.92 and saved $436.99. I did use some ecb's because I bought easter stuff and things I "needed" to use up ecb's about to expire. But what I bought was ketchup, canned milk, teeth stuff, bread, milk....things I needed...so I am still staying within my resolution.

What I have found is that my ecb's are expiring and my need list (atleast from what cvs has) is getting smaller, so I have asked my friends if they need things like toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, etc. SOOOOOO.....if an item I don't need comes to more than free with ecb, I am going to roll my ecb on that product and give them to my friends. The item has to be completely free or free+. I still think this falls under my resolution because I am not spending any money (and not loosing money..ecbs) and I am right away giving those items to people who need it. win win!

03-02-2008, 05:07:54 PM
Wow I'm amazed by your savings. I know I've done pretty good but Hundreds of dollars worth of stuff for .01? please teach me.

03-02-2008, 08:31:29 PM
What would you like to know? I have been doing this for a few years, so I only shop to maintain my stockpile, and buy fresh foods. Or stuff that I can get for free of course. Like today, I got Aunt Jemina frozen breakfast foods for free! At CVS, I save a lot of money because I roll my ecbs. Let me know how I can help.

I am so impressed- I am new to couponing and trying to figure it all out. I'm starting small, but I have to admit I am very intrigued by CVS. Do you get ECBs for things other than what they publish in the ads? Do you always know how many ECBs you are going to get before you purchase? I used to not even use my CVS card all the time because I thought the ECBs were worthless. UGH!!!

You inspire me and I like seeing the actual things you bought and what was free.
