Ok, here's the other game I promised would be posted today.

We're going to have a good old fashioned poker night next Friday, October 5th. If you've ever seen the scene in Mr. Mom where they are playing coupon poker, that's what we're going to do.

If you can commit to playing, and keeping a window of time open on Friday night between 5-8PM pac time, we'll have a winner-take-all poker tournament.

I'd like to limit this to tables of 5, and I'll take signups until October 4th.

On the 5th, you'll all be dealt the first round of cards and I'll PM you what your cards are. There will be a thread for each table to play in, where I'll deal in the remaining cards, and you all can play, ante, and fold. We'll play until there's a clear winner at each table. The winner of each table will receive coupons from the other players. In each round, I'll PM you more cards for the new shuffle through.

Here's the first part of the rules:

BUY IN for the play: You need to have $200 in face value of coupons to buy in. So, if the coupon you're playing with is a BoGo coupon worth $2.99, that counts as $2.99 of your buying.

When your table thread is open, please go in and introduce yourself to the other players. List out what coupons you're bringing to the table .and their exp dates in your intro

Some caveats on acceptable coupons....

* Must have at least a 2-week expiration window
* No cleaner, pet, baby, make-up, or haircolor coupons
* Since coupons are face value only, if they're "hot" like a cereal peelie, it's still only worth what it's worth.
* If you come in and your coupons are a little over $200 because of the odd numbers, don't worry about it, but please do come in with the minimum.

Once your table has a winner, please put the coupons out right away in Saturday's mail.

In each table's thread, the rules for actual play the night of the game will be posted in my intro thread to each table.

Again, please be sure you have the time to commit to be online to play. In the event a table isn't full, we'll bounce you over to another table...Texas Hold'em has room for 8, so we'll be ok if we plan for tables of 5.

If you have any questions, feel free to post them. Since this is the first time we've ever tried to do something like this, bear with me on working out the kinks.

If you want to play, please post in this thread!

Thanks - and I hope we have some great fun next weekend!!!

Ok, you can include BTFE since they are .10c each. And coke codes can work too - let's decide a value for them though, and I'm terrible about judging them. Rebate forms can be used to, for the face value.

It's Texas Hold'em, and we'll be playing through the site, not through any kind of yahoo or anything.

In the OP, I mentioned that specific directions would be given in the threads the day of play. However, for those who need a broader understanding, this is an easy read on how to play.

LOL - it's really not hard...there's just some steps to it, but really, it's all about making poker hands.

Pair
Two Pairs
3 of a kind
straight (5 sequential cards)
flush (all the same suit)
4 of a kind
straight flush
royal flush (sequential cards of the same suit)

Update - there's enough people that have questions about how this is going to work that I think tonight's round - we'll do a demo tonight only - let people ask questions, and then play for real next week. That will give people a chance to see how it works first, and gather some more coupons to play. And if $200 in face value is too hard to come up with - let's drop it back to $100 - just means you might be spent out a little faster if you aren't a good poker player.

Demo tonight will be start somewhere between 6-7PM PAC time.

Ah Bummer I was really looking forward to playing. But since I still havent come up with a full $200 in coupons I guess its a good thing. I did have a question though are IP coupons ok? And is ok to use 2 of the same coupon?

Thanks

10-05-2007, 07:21:03 PM
Ok, sorry I'm late - our waiter tonight at dinner was slow as molasses.

I would say no to IP coupons since some people can't use them. Yes to multiples of coupons is ok.

Getting a deck of cards - brb!

OK, here's the demo.

We're going to assume we have 5 ppl at this table.

I've just dealt each player 2 cards and we'll say that I PMed you your cards. You wouldn't let anyone know what those two cards are.

In this scenario, each player got dealt the following:

H=Hearts
D=Diamonds
S=Spades
C=Clubs

Player 1: Ace-H, 5-H
Player 2: 7-S, Jack-D
Player 3: 2-H, 3-H
PLayer 4: King-D, 7-C
Player 5: Queen-C, 7-D

Again, you all wouldn't know each other's hands. At this point, based on your cards, you can choose to bet or fold. Max bet and Max raise is $5.

Let's say everybody opted to play.

Player 1 decides to play the cards, and bets $2 in face value of coupons.
Players 2-4 can either then fold again as a choice, or call or raise the bet. Calling the bet is matching it, raising is matching it and adding to the bet.

Player 2 would post if they want to call or raise.

Player 3 raised the bet $1.

Player four needs to bet $3 if they want to stay in the game, or fold. Player 4 opts to fold based on this hand.

Player 5 calls and bets $3 - the original $2 bet plus matching player 2's raise.

Player 1 has a choice - they can either call, raise, or fold. Everyone gets 1 chance to raise the bet. So feasibily, this could go around 5 times, but really, you need another card. So Player 1 calls the bet. Player 2 is going to call the bet two. Now everyone is in for the same amount.

The pot is now $12.

So, now we deal the next 3 cards. Everyone shares these cards to make the cards better. This is called the flop.

The flop for this hand is:

7-H
8-H
4-C

Now, you'd play for poker hands.

Everyone goes again. Based on what everyone has, everyone is still in the game.

Player 1 starts again. He could check the bet (ie, skips to the next player) or he could place a bet.

He has 4 hearts right now, so he's going to place a $3 bet.

Everybody calls or raises again until everyone who's going to play has placed an equal bet.

Now we deal the Turn card. The turn card for this game is the Jack of Spades.

Player 2 has the best hand right now - with 2 pairs.

Player 1 says - $1 bet
Player 2 - Raise $5 (the max)
Player 3 folds
Player 5 - calls (putting in $6)

Player 1 has to either call, fold or raise. And so it goes until everyone is either in, or out. In means, all bets in have to be matched.

Last card - The river card.

Last card dealt is King of Hearts.

Player 1 now has a flush
Player 2 has 2 pairs
Player 5 has 1 pair

The bets go around again.

Player 1 bets $2
Player 2 raised the $5
PLayer 5 has to put in $7 or fold. Player 5 folds.

Player 1 has to either then match the $5 or fold or raise. He raises $5. Player 2 has to put in $5 or fold - can't raise cause they already had the chance to raise once.

PLayer 2 puts in the $5, and then compare hands.

Player 1 with the flush is the winner.

Now, based on what coupons were played, set aside what you used because you've now committed them to that round's winner. That round's winner needs to keep inventory because they can now use those coupons in future rounds. We'll help keep track as we go.

At the end of the game, all players will end up sending their coupons played to the big winner of the night, so in essence, since there were 5 players in this round, 4 ppl are going to be sending out an envie the next day.

Ok, now that said, do we have some people who want to test this through tonight? Practice run here. Three people minimum to do the practice round - maximum of 8.

Please post if you want to do a practice run tonight!

Bumping up an old thread... Wondering how that first coupon poker event went, and are you all still playing coupon poker occasionally? If yes, when is the next game? I am learning poker and I have coupons...
