I can easily give compliments on many products. For those that regularly do this with the additional hope of getting good coupons, do you keep track of who, when and what products you contact for? While I can honestly give feedback on products, I wouldn't want to overdo it as well as repeat comments on same/ similar products.

I do keep track. I use a small calendar. When I contact a company, I note the day/email/phone and then, I make a note three months forward.

Three months because that seems to be the average time that companies keep your email/phone in their system. I've just learned that through all the emailing I've done.
I get coupons back probably 80% of the time. Some companies will return your email and tell you their sending them. Some don't and you get a surprise in the mail:)

I contacted Creamette about a year ago about some bad spaghetti noodles I purchased. They all broke into 1/2" to 1" pcs when they were cooked! They explained how that may have happened, asked for the UPC code and said they would look into it. I received 5 coupons for free any Creamette pasta. I didn't pay for pasta in almost a year! I wasn't even trying for coupons. I never thought of complimenting. There are TONS of products I loyally purchase.

For mega companies, like P&G, asking will get you a response that they publish their own coupons in the monthly paper, and other offers.

Complaint will get you a coupon, often a free product.

For small companies that can't afford to pay for the weekly insert publication, just contacting them gives them access to their target audience, and if you ask for coupons they will send.

Some companies will send great coupons just for a compliment; almost everyone will respond to a request for coupons if they don't have regular inserts.

SC Johnson will send a product for a free coupon with any compliment, just include your address in your email.

If you DON'T ask, you might just get a thanks. Coupons are more expensive to PRODUCE and mail than you might think, so if they don't know you will use them, they may not send them.

Organic companies, ALWAYS ask.

Every year, fraudulent coupons cost retailers over $500 million dollars. The situation is serious enough that many of the premiere U.S. law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, FTC, IRS, and USPIS and even the Secret Service investigate, and prosecute, coupon fraud related crimes.

Thanks, Flash, for the info on how much it costs to insert a coupon - I had figured it must be expensive. That's why they don't bother to put them in our paper - the market's too small to make it worth their $. Looks like printables will be more attractive to marketers. It will be cheaper to put a file on their website than to print a glossy coupon. If someone sends them a fraudulent one, they just won't redeem it. The ones getting squeezed will be the grocers first because they won't get paid for taking the coupons, then we'll get squeezed because the grocers will stop taking any and all printables. I hope they figure out a way to stop the counterfeits. I will try contacting the companies - this is a great thread. Thanks for all the work.

I know a lot of posts out there talk about the 'try it you'll like it' guarantees (and possibly abusing them?) and MIR's for free products, but you'd be surprised how many companies are generous enough to send out complimentary-product coupons! This is especially true with smaller natural and health-food companies. All you have to do is write to them with a compliment and politely request/ask about some manufacturer's coupons as a frequent buyer of their line. You will usually get a very friendly response from a very generous Customer Service Rep!

Here is my running list of the most generous, all of whom I got at least one free-product voucher, in addition to $1/cents-off coupons that have no expiration date!

I went to Frito-Lay's site, to sign up for their Club, and I filled out the whole form, and hit 'enter', and suddenly, I was on a different web page, and there was no welcome, or email confirmation, or anything, when I finished. I wasn't sure if they had gotten my info. Most companies, ask you to wait 6-8 weeks, but I didn't want to wait that long only to find out that I hadn't been signed up all along. KWIM?
I looked for a contact email, and didn't find one. But...they did have a # for me to call, so I did. The lady there took my info, and said they'd have someone return my call. I reiterated my whole story again, to this person, and this person said that they were going to send me coupons out in the mail, for "all my trouble"!!! This person called me back 5 MINUTES after I called them! Talk about quick!
All I called for was to find out whether or not I was signed up. Isn't that cool?

I love contacting companies for coupons. One good reason is that the date of the coupons are dated better than the coupons that you get from the newspaper. The company that surprised me with coupons was Pepsie. I called them and they send me five 50 cents coupons. Now you know that pop companies don't send coupons, so that was a big surprise. I tried to call Old spice today for the prove-it challenge(the deodorant made my poor dh itch and burn.) All I could get ahold of was the automated section. The recording was downright degrading, insinuating that my dh wasn't manly enough for their product.

I left a message, but was so mad, I wrote them an email. They answered back about they don't know why this happened, the deodorant went through very strict testing. blah, blah, blah...

They did say they would be sending out a letter in the mail to me. No mention of replacement cost or coupons or anything. I guess I will just have to wait and see. It says right on the deodorant there is a 1-800-prove-it guarantee. If they are going to make it this hard to get your money back, they shouldn't bother to offer it.

In the SC Johnson one, there was a coupon for a free Fanastik product and little booklet with several coupons in it. The one from Del Monte had several coupons for their fruit product.

Well today, I got 4 50 cent coupons from Heinz & 3 $1 off coupon from Oroweat. I'm really impressed so far!

Sometimes they won't say that they are sending something and they still do. About half of the companies that sent me these kinds of e-mails sent q-s via snail mail later. Don't give up hope!

I sent two messages to SC Johnson, one was a compliment for their new Ziploc Zip n Steam bags. I bought a box for .25 (using Target & manf. q's). They thanked me for my comments & said they are sending out a coupon for a free box. I also sent them a complaint about a Drano product I used. I found that the store brand works much better! They apologized to me & said they are sending me a $7.29 refund. They didn't even ask how much I paid for it (I used q's & it was definitely less than $7.29!) I can't wait to get my mail! :biggrin:

I think SC Johnson has the best customer service. They send an e-mail immediately after your your comment and then in 2-3 days you get the mail with a free coupon or refund. They are very generous. Hope they will keep it up even after being flooded with complaints or compliments.
I had to e-mail them recently about the shower cleaner which is worthless. They sent me a refund check for 24.99! I really hated that thing and was bummed that I never got a rebate form but now I don't need it any more.

So far I have gotten coupons from Olivio (2 for a free product and a few others), Dannon, Pictsweet (2 each for a free bag of veggies), Turkey Hill (they sent 10 coupons and a magnet), Lauras Lean Ground Beef and Birds Eye (3- .25 off). After reading through this thread last week, I decided to try to collect coupons for the products I use the most and seldom see coupons for in my inserts. I started small by contacting 4 companies to compliment them on their products. I contacted:
1) SC Johnson to compliment them on the new crystal rain Windex scent. Within three days, I had a coupon for a free Windex and a booklet of other misc. coupons.
2) Purina to let them know that my cat is brand specific and will not eat any other dry food besides Kit N Kaboodle. They sent (2) $2.00 Coupons.
3) Hellmann's to compliment them on their Canola, Cholesterol-free mayo. They sent back a very nice email with no mention of coupons. Keeping my fingers crossed for snail mail.
4)McCains to compliment them on their Sweet potato french fries. Again, I got a very nice email in response but no mention of coupons.

I'm definitely going to keep this up! Off to email more companies.

I emailed customer service for McNeil consumer healthcare (Tylenol, Motrin, etc...) I told them that my teething baby goes through tons of these products and that I would like the coupons on their website, but the coupon printer was saying that I had reached my limit, and I've never printed a coupon from them before (honest to god truth.)

Received in the mail this week 2 $1 off children's or infant's Motrin (NED), 2 $1 off children's or infant's Tylenol (NED), 1 $1 off children's Tylenol Plus (NED), $.55 off Viactiv (3/1/08), and $1 off Mylicon drops (12/31/09). MUCH better than I would have gotten from the website if it had let me print. Also some product information and a little chart that shows which cold medicines and prescription meds contain the different pain relievers, to help you prevent double-dosing.


A couple of months ago, I called Pampers regarding some defective diapers (the tabs kept tearing off). They sent me a postage-paid envelope to send them a few of the defective diapers, along with 2 $10 off coupons for the super mega packs.

I don't really use a form letter -- if you're giving a compliment, just tell them how much you like their product. I always just say something like, "Just wanted to let you know how much my family and I enjoy [insert product here]. It's something everybody in my household will eat - and we're picky eaters! Thanks so much for making a great product!"

If it's not a food product, then maybe talk about how useful it is and how much time/work it saves you.

For a complaint, just be honest and tell them why you're disappointed in the product. I've emailed companies because products didn't work they way the label promised, they were defective products, too strong-smelling, etc...

And then I always end with, "I don't think I will be buying this product anymore in the future." I never demand a refund, but most of the time they will send me an apology and refund anyway...

Anyway, that's what I do. Hope that helps!

I recently tried to print one of the Oust candle coupons from their website & it said I had printed the coupon already (which I hadn't). So I sent them an email telling them I was unable to print the coupon even though I had never printed it before. They apologized & sent me a coupon for a FREE Oust candle holder which is even better than the one I was trying to print.

I purchased a package of the Kraft LiveActive cheese sticks at the store and when I got it home, I saw that one of the sticks was all moldy. I called to let them know & they are refunding my purchase price!

This has happened to me numerous times. I have even called the paper to complain. I may have to stop my subscription and just go to the store to get them.


You know what gets me mad? It's getting the Sundays paper without the coupons section. I went back and forth about three times looking for the coupons in hope that I missed them but no luck.
