EASY WAY TO GET RID of WEEDS

get out that box of regular table salt. Take it
outside and pour it on the cracks or wherever those
naughty weeds or wayward grasses are raising their
ugly heads. They will die off!!

Don't do this on your flower beds-- it'll kill all of your WANTED plants, too. Just driveway cracks, patios. etc.

I have done this for years, only with rock salt. I always stock up at the end of winter with enough to last through spring and summer since it doesn't last too long before you have to apply it again.

The salt also keeps those nasty little slugs away.

If I did this I wouldn't have any grass left.

we pour boiling water on weeds in cracks, kills them, and no salt mess to deal with.

For weeds in your lawn, try this tip. Get a scrap peice of PVC pipe about 2-3 in diameter and about 5 inches long. Boil some water in a tea kettle and go around your lawn, setting the pipe over the weed push down hard to make good contact with the ground and then pour boiling water into the pipe.

This will kill the weed, might kill a little grass surrounding the weed but not a lot and will fill back in pretty fast. Uses no chemicals and really does kill dandilions and canadian thistle (two of the hardest weeds I have found to kill without killing your grass!)

I've got this funky weed i've never seen before my friend says its call "will not die or can not kill" guess what i've found nothing with that name he swore that is what it was truly called - it's sort of like ground cover but it's a weed- its everywhere my lawn/garden it comes up faster than I can pull it out and weed killer won't seem to touch it!!! HELP

Here's the weed killer my mom uses all the time - do not get on the grass if you want to keep it.

1 GALLON VINEGAR
1 BOX SALT
6 OR 7 DROPS DISHWASHING LIQUID

Still has the salt in it, but can be sprayed.

Does it look sort of like a fern spreading out on the ground? I have that stuff and I swear it grows like wildfire. It has a bazillion seeds underneath the fronds, so guess what, if you pull it up and don't throw it in the trash -- you just spread it to a new part of your lawn or flowerbed. :lame:

Thanks Queen I heard and have done the puring of hot water for weed killer but it does kill a lot of grass that surrounds the weeds. I will try your technique.

My kids play on the grass all the time I refuse to put anything on it other than organic crap so to speak. hahaha

This year a lot of crab grass has grown. Not only in our yard but the neighbors who have theirs treated. You know what, my grass seems to be greener than theirs right now, even though we haven't had any rain. I think the grass gets dependent on water when you treat it. Not saying that mine looks terrific but it is greener.

We have a bit of nice, healthy crabgrass on our (treated) lawn.

We're having some landscaping done soon, so I may have Mike see if he can do anything about that, too. I don't ordinarily pay people to do yard work, but with MrPs back problem and my pregnancy, not a lot is getting done this summer.

If I tried to kill all the weeds in the yard...we wouldn't have much of a yard. LOL...ours was neglected for years before we bought it and we have had other priorities as well. We did a lot of tree trimming and cut down some as well, that should help get some sunlight on the ground. We have noticed the moss is dying back where the sun gets through now.
We have a lot of wooded area that is cleared of underbrush so the leaves naturally make a thick mulch layer. Still, we need to use chemical weed control or the brush would grow back very quickly. We use a 1 yr weed control on the cement (cracks) and gravel drive. But again, we have more weeds than grass at this point...

Crabgrass is simple, you just need to put down a pre-emergent a couple times a year (as I recall, in January & again in March). At this point, unless you want alot of chemicals & pretty much wasted effort (cuz if it hasn't bothered you too much by now, then 4 more months shouldn't make much of a difference), I would advise you to do nothing. It should naturally die off when the cold hits. It will then leave seeds in the ground. By using the pre-emergent (we used Scotts), it prevents the seeds from germinating. Imho, its the easiest weed to control, with the least effort.

Yeah, that's what I meant by treated. We used the pre-emergent crabgrass killer and it still showed up. Persistent stuff. I gave up.

Ummm...it could be for a variety of reasons. First, call you local cooperative extension office & confirm the best times to use it in your area. Verify the square foot of your yard to make sure you are applying enough. It usually did require 2 applications (Kurt might have put down a 3rd at a later date, I can't be certain of that). Finally, make sure what you are using is fresh. Not that I'm really certain that makes a difference or not; but if the same bag has sat in your garage for 5 years, it might make a difference.

Another thing, weeds need certain conditions for optimal growth. The more bare your lawn is, the easier it is for weeds to germinate and take hold. I'd suggest that you overseed this fall if you think it is necessary. You might even make a couple..humm..my mind just went blank on the word...you know, the grown grass you buy that you just lay down? Complete blank-lol! Anyway, then once the crabgrass dies, plant them in the bare spots. A nice thick (but not too thick), healthy lawn, is one of the biggest deterrants (sp?) of weeds.

Good luck.

Sod.

Our lawn is somewhat of a mess, not obviously, but we know it's not great. Lots of trees = lots of shade = lots of moss and such. I don't really care that much, to be honest. We may be moving in the not too distant future, anyway. I'll kill myself on the next lawn!

I agree that the best deterent for weeds is a good lawn. We area that needs to be reseeded since the dogs have dug it up a bit, and it gets tons of weeds. Thistle is the bane of me! We have a wild field behind our house and it blows all those weed seeds into our yard.
