We have $0 balance on both mine and DH's Capital One cards. These aren't used for anything and haven't been for awhile. Suddenly mine gets hit with a $5 monthly membership fee, and DH's with a $19 membership fee. On top of that, I was charged a $19 past due fee because I didn't realize that I'd been charged $5. I'm not PAYING a company to maintain a card I don't use. I have cards that pay ME to have them...not vice versa.

Long story short, they wouldn't drop the fees, so we closed the accounts. Funny thing is, upon closing the accounts, they had to drop the fees by law. Idiots.

It ends up being bad business for them...one card had a $5000 credit limit on it. Imagine their profits if we (like most of the rest of America) had a sudden emergency or were drooling over the latest plasma TV and whipped out their card. Oh well. I know your credit takes a small hit from closed accounts, but it's OK. We have no big purchases in our future and our credit is excellent. It's just two less accounts to worry about.

I just can't believe that with all the money they spend trying to get new victims that they would let two go over a couple dollars in fees.

Crap one is famous for this stunt. I will NEVER do business with them for exactly this reason. Back in college I had a credit card from another bank that got bought by them and I had the same happen but the fee was really big, like $75. I closed the card immediately and had the same thing happen, theey had to refund the charge. If you are looking for a card to replace them (if you plan to go forward by using credit cards and paying them off every month), I have had nothing but positive experiences with Citi and also like Chase and Discover. I'm a rewards card junkie!!

I had them about 7 years ago it was actually my first credit card. I had nothing but hell with them. I paid off the balance, then called and closed the card. They proceeded to charge me a $5 fee. I moved and didn't do a forwarding address because it was college and nothing important went there anyway except my bills and I changed everything that I still had open. Well Crap One kept charging me and since I didn't know it I was turned over to collections for $30 how nice is that? I will never do business with them again, and it just pisses me off that their banks are popping up all over Houston now!

Ditto here. I closed my account for the exact same reason years ago, and have advised my grown children to steer clear of that company. They are a rip off!!
