If so, what are some good recipes? Not chapstick but lip gloss. I have heard you can save yourself alot of money by making your own and sometimes, if you have a good recipe, it turns out better than the expensive stuff. Anyone ever tried this before?

I've not tried it, but with all the lip gloss I get for free with coupons, I don't see the need.

What coupons do you have that you get it for free?

cvs and wags often have some free after ecb and rr.
Black friday is coming up and seems like I got pink shiny and white shiny last year from cvs. Don't who made it - something icious.
I also use the gloss from the covergirl outlasts. It has a gloss in a separate stick.
I got oodles free at publix.

I have never made any homemade lip balm before (for the same reason as the above posters), but I do have a link to a recipe for it, if you would like to check it out. I always hang on to it "just in case" I ever do need to make any.

I saw an episode of Creative Juice on DIY or HGTV where they turned old tubes of lip stick into tinted lip gloss by mixing it with vaseline. I haven't tried it, but it looked really easy. I looked for the episode or details on the DIY site and only found a description. I think it might have been 1 part lipstick to 2 parts vaseline....but not completely sure. on that.

I don't do this anymore because I have found with "power" couponing I never need to actually pay for health & beauty items.
HOWEVER, before I was "power" couponing, I was just extremely frugal and I was always reading books/articles/etc on how to save money. At that time I did make my own lip gloss using old lipsticks and chapStick/Carmex as described in the article in the link by the previous poster on this thread. HOWEVER, this works a lot better if you microwave everything for just a few seconds. This melts everything and allows you to completely stir everything together. Then when it cools it is all one consistency. Alternatively, you could probably melt everything by putting it all in some sort of container and setting that container in very hot water -- kind of like melting chocolate in a double boiler when you are baking.
I was doing this back in the day when Carmex was sold in little glass/ceramic "pots". Now Carmex is sold in little plastic "pots" which I would NOT microwave. Anyway, back then I would take a half used "pot" of carmex and add my lipstick scrapings and put it in the microwave for just a few seconds and then stir it all with a toothpick and let it cool. Voila -- now I had a little carmex "pot" complete with lid that contained homemade lip gloss.

I think even if you can get products for free, sometimes it's just fun to make your own.
I also have kids, so we have made Kool-Aid lip gloss before as a fun project.
I don't remember the recipe exactly, but you can melt a little petroleum jelly in the microwave, then mix in Kool-Aid powder (used the the small unsweetened packets)....add just enough to add some flavor & color to the melted vaseline. Then pour into something like a contact lens case (you can make 2 flavors, and put one in each side) and set out or in fridge to cool.
My 5 year old thought it was the best thing in the world !!!!!!!!

There are so many butters and oils along with waxes you can use to make your own gloss or lipsticks. Recipes are all over the internet. I was planning to have my own line of natural body products so I don't buy the store's unless it is free.
When I did mine, I cheated a little a bought premixed butter/oil/wax and then added my own micas, coloring and flavoring. It's fun and relatively easy. The initial investment I don't remember, but price per gloss especially equal to something like Burt's Bees is great. If you are just making it for yourself and a few friends and family you wouldn't need to buy a lot of tubes or even a specialized tube filler.
If you like liquid gloss, castor oil is the main ingredient for it, but once again you can add any other oil you like along with colorant and flavoring.

I was thinking about trying this. I've actually heard that they are good sellers at craft fairs!

I've been contemplating doing this as a Christmas gift project. I think it'd be fun to find neat little tins and decorate them somehow and make my own lip blam/lip gloss using different colors and flavors. I'm one of those crafty gift people, though... I always make everything!
One year I made some bath salts and they turned out really well. Maybe this could go along with that?

Neat idea that I've never thought of. I'm a lipgloss hussy though- I have tons of it but do not use drugstore brands. My fave runs $18 each and its the one thing I will splurge on.

There are some great recipes for lip gloss and lots of other homemade beauty and bath goodies in the book "Dinning On A Dime" There is also some homemade cleaning solutions. My family of 7 loves this book. The older girls have a blast making beauty supplies for their younger sisters and cousins for Christmas gifts!
