So I'm new to the puppy world and all the EXPENSES :money7: that go with them. We now are the proud owners of a 5 month old basset hound named Piper. Anyhow, I'm wondering what the difference is between the $40+ frontline flea and tick stuff compared to some of the stuff like Biospot that is only $20. I'm also thinking I saw some stuff at the store...I wanna say brand name Hartz...that is less than $10. Anyone have any insight? TIA!!

(lurked for a bit but I saw this question and decided to register)

There is a huge difference. Hartz is dangerous: HartzVictims.org - One More Victim is One Too Many (http://www.hartzvictims.org/) You could end up spending a lot more money if you try it. I have made the mistake of buying it and I was lucky it did no harm (it also didn't kill the fleas). I haven't used BioSpot but a google search turned up some bad things there too.

IMO, I would only use medicines that are recommended by your vet. It is poison, so it's all a bit dangerous but Frontline, Capstar, Advantage, and Revolution are pretty trusted. I have used Frontline and Revolution and I think very highly of them. One thing you can do to save money is get the size for a big dog and divide it up by weight. I believe they sell starter kits that help you with it on ebay. You don't need to buy that but we did and it made it easier for me. You need to make sure you measure it right and store the leftover in an airtight container and get a stringe (no needle) to measure and apply it. When I treat my cats I use the size of Frontline for a big dog but I can treat them all, it's much cheaper than buying separate doses.
You also probably don't need to dose every month, unless you are using Revolution to prevent heart worm. Since it basically is putting poison on your pet you'll want to only apply it when they actually need it.
I'm sure someone would have come along with this info, but Hartz and the other OTC just make me so nervous. It's disgusting that they can keep selling that stuff.
congrats on your new puppy!
