I went to harris teeter and used a coupon that says do not double but they doubled it anyways. Should I tell them it should not double or is it the cashiers fault for not seeing it? Can I please get some input? I dont want to post what i saved on this website because I dont want to get in trouble for a cashiers error.

HT registers do not have the capability to stop a DND coupon from doubling. It would be up to the cashier to manually prevent it from doubling. Some stores are firm about this and will pull all DND coupons aside, other stores (most of them in fact) have no issue with it.
If your coupons doubled, don't worry about it. That is actually what HT advertises: "We double coupons to .99".
One year ago I had not heard of any stores that would give the DND coupons special treatment. Now it is becoming more common to find cashiers or whole stores that will not double them. But if your coupons doubled, just be happy. One day soon the coupon coding will become sophisticated enough that they just won't double at all. Until then, it is a YMMV.

Depends on the cashier. Some pull them aside and some don't. So this is a chance you take using them. But you can always say I don't want to purchase this item and they will pull it out of your order.

based on what I was told by several people when I had the same question you have, I was told: if the upc code starts with a 5 it will double. The scanner can not read English. The "do not double" is put there for the benefit of the stores that do not double. It allows that store and other stores like them, that do not double, to show the customer. I hand the clerk my coupons on the right product and with a non expired date and if it scans, it scans. They make the rules not me. If I think it should scan for some reason, I'll ask why it did not.

Yes, the "5" coupons should Double/Triple (whatever the case may be). Just give them to the cashier and let him/her scan the coupons. I usually paper clip my "weird" coupons and present them to the cashier separately. Same goes for rainchecks and BOGO(s) coupons, etc.
For example, if you have DND (Do not Double) coupons, I put them all together. I do the same for the coupons that are my Competitor Coupons, Coupons up to $.99 (that will Double, Super Double, or Triple--depending on the sales), Face Value coupons (over $1 that DO NOT Double, Super Double, or Triple), and Face Value coupons that I would use after my 20 limit coupons are reached--you can still use coupons after the 20 coupon limit--you just don't get the sales for doubling, etc.. I might also suggest this same procedure for BOGO sales and coupons related to other "special deals".
Also, I insist on speaking to a manager (higher up than the cashier or Customer Service Clerk) to have them override the DND coupons or issues that I may have. Actually the "white shirt" Customer Service Managers CAN override the cashiers and Customer Service Clerks' decision. Also, the Co-Managers, Store Managers, etc. can override the Customer Service Managers if you don't agree with their decisions on coupons. After all, it IS YOUR MONEY--right?n Just check at the Service Desk and be courteous and polite.
Just some tips that have helped me. It may be YMMV.

I'm not clear - if they don't double a coupon that states "do not double" then you ask for a manager? That doesn't make sense, I'm sorry. Maybe I am misunderstanding and, if so, please don't take it personally but that is completely ridiculous.
Asking for a manager and causing a fuss just causes stores to give couponers a hard time. Now, don't get me wrong, if there is a legitimate complaint then by all means ask for help but please don't be one of those people who makes a fuss for every little thing every time you go in the store - believe me when I say that stores do notice and discuss it at their meetings.

No, I meant that I only ask a manager if the coupons need to be overriden. Or if there is another question concerning coupons.

I'm not getting that. If a store does not double, then why don't ALL coupons have DND on them. Why are some coupons allowed to double and some don't. The manufacturer will only pay for face value + .08 handling, they will not pay the store the double or triple amount. It is absorbed by the store instead. If it's up to the store to decide if they want to double or triple coupons, then why does the manufacturer put a DND on the coupon? Why does the manu. care if the store takes a loss for the extra money if they double or triple it?

Exactly! It doesn't make any difference to the manufacturer whether they double or triple it, it's up to the store. I have no clue why they put DND on some coupons. I've heard before that it's so that stores know they won't be getting reimbursed for the extra double or triple value, but that doesn't make sense either--the stores know they only get reimbursed for face value.

My HT has gotten SUPER strict about this lately, with every cashier pulling out the DNDs for manual entry. I wrote to corporate to clarify the official policy because there is NO consistency about this, either at HTs or other stores that double coupons (Lowe's Foods, Bi-Lo). Coporate responded that they will not double anything that says do not double (they said this is covered under the clause "We uphold any purchase stipulations set forth by product manufacturer"), and that doubling these coupons would be fraud. They way I see it, there are three possibilities:
HT coupon doubling is actually done through an agreement with the manufacturers and clearinghouse, and HT actually gets double reimbursement for the doubled coupons. In this case, I fully understand and support why they wouldn't double the DNDs -- they'd lose money every time they did.
HT coupon doubling is taken from HT's profits, and not doubling the DNDs allows them to weasel out of some doubling and reap the rewards. Can't say I would be OK with this, as it wouldn't be any more fraud to double it than it would be to double any other coupon. This would allow them to not honor their double coupon policy just because "do not double" is printed on the coupon, even though it would be functionally the same on the back end.
HT corporate customer service and managers don't understand coupon doubling any better than we do, and they're just making up the rules as they go.
The doubled portion of a doubled coupon isn't taxed, which means it counts as a discounted price rather than a coupon, so I most strongly suspect it's #2. But really, there's no way to know because we have no way of knowing what kinds of agreements they have with manufacturers. I have seen a post on another forum (can no longer find it) where someone who talked to a store owner said it was #1.
