Anyone else have a Lab, whose favorite past time is chewing??? I am trying to find that perfect toy for my lab, but he either loses interest, or has it completely to pieces in a matter of minutes. We just bought 2 toys, we thought he was going to love, a nylabone, (Which he loved for the first 10 or so minutes) then lost interest when it either lost flavor, or he figured out it couldn't tear it up. We also bought a dogzilla (I believe it is supposed to be like a kong) but it was chicken flavor. I thought this one is going to be great, he can't chew through a kong in a day, and it is chicken flavor, which he will love!! Well, he loved it alright, it lasted 5 minutes. Now I have a million red plastic pieces all over the floor I have to go clean up. These things are not cheap either we're talking 7-10 a pop. So, I was just wondering what other labs have enjoyed!!??!! (That doesn't cost an arm and a leg) TIA for any suggestions!!!

I have been very lucky with my girls. I have never had a problem with chewing.

Thank you
Oh yeah they shed, I am forever sweeping the floor. I have 5 all together. 3 Males 2 females.
Molly-Black
Dixie- Yellow
Pistol- Yellow
Sport- yellow
Diesel- yellow
The males stay at the hunting club until we can get the yard fenced in. Hopefully by next year I can bring them back home. My males used to stay inside when they was a bit younger but it was too much with all them inside. I have been very lucky . I do crate train and maybe that helped with chewing.

try an actual kong...my lab has not been able to chew threw that one....i also have found a "tire" at petsmart...it looks like a small mini tire...my lab at first couldnt chew threw it but it took him a couple months to break a piece off of it...just small ones...and they can use it as a tug of war type toy...
make sure you get a bigger kong...you dont want it too small that it can get stuck in the dogs throat. also they are nice because when they bounce, they bounce crooked and will give the dogs a good run
i also would go to garage sales and grab $.10 stuffed animals just to let them destroy them for fun...makes a mess but it is cheaper than buying a toy
my two dogs (lab and belgian malinois) can destroy any toy...except a kong

We have a chocolate lab....she has never been a huge chewer...which from what I have heard, most are....this is our first lab...and will probably not be our last....love these dogs. When she does chew, she will usually chew on a rawhide bone and she will eat peanut butter out of a kong...but even as a puppy, she would not chew up things....I think she chewed a pen, maybe 2 shoes, and paper....and that was about it....but she did destroy many stuffed dog toys....one night I sat for about an hour repairing her toys...gave them to her....she had them all ripped up in about 10 minutes....boy, did I waste my time.:giggle2:quit buying her stuffed animals after that....we have tug toys for her, and balls and she loves those....loves for us to pitch things for her to retrieve....guess thats why they call them labrador retreivers...:giggle2:....oh, and when we leave we never crate her....my dh things it is cruel, so we have never done that...glad she has been good ....she is about 3 and a half yrs now.

lol, yea, Midas goes through stuffed animals like you wouldn't believe!! We finally gave up on stuffed animal type toys, because he started stealing them from my girls:giggle2:They didn't like that too much!!! Peanut butter is the only way to go with the kong for us, (unless they have a flavored one I haven't found yet) He doesn't like the taste of rubber, so I put peanut butter in them, and once it is gone, just put some more!! That's the only way he will mess with it!!! As far as when we leave the house, we have to lock him in the bathroom, or he would tear up the entire house!!! If we had a fenced in back yard, he would probably stay outside while we were gone, but not that lucky!!!

Do you have a problem with her chewing the walls or anything of that nature in the bathroom? I would be afraid to leave both loose in the house if I was not home. I think Dixie would be fine, but Molly is a different story. They will knock over the trash can, and see if some goodies is in there for them.

So far we have not had a problem locking him in the bathroom, we always leave the light on, and leave him with toys to chew on, and try not to stay gone too long!! We've been lucky in that sense!!

Our lab...doesn't ever get in the garbage, and I don't even have a lid on it....and she could easily get in it....but she is so picky...I guess, she doesn't see anything she likes in it..:hysterical:....about a year ago, she got in some of my coffee grounds and just chewed the coffee filter....she's quite unusual....my dd has her sister from another litter, same parents....my neice raises purebred labs and gave us the dogs....my dd's dog is nothing like ours....her dog is about a year younger....she has a fenced-in yard...it ate ALL her shubbery....all the bushes, all the flowers and then started working on the house...:giggle2:...the heatpump, the gutters, the outside grill....my sil threated to get rid of the dog many times....thank goodness, she is out of that phase, but it was pretty bad....my dd just kept pleading the dog's case....she loves that dog and it loves her also...I guess the dog figured out who took her side.:giggle2:

Eclipse loves socks, it's his weakness!
So far his kong, and this stuffed football have lasted (i'm truly suprised he hasn't torn the football up since he HATES stuffed toys) and this mega rawhide he got after he got neuter as a downtime toy.
Oh and this really hard treat puzzle thing by some dog lady (clearanced to $4 at petsmart right now) he cannot get the treats out no matter what just yet and it's great to keep him occupied.
And he's not a big shedder :D

my chocolate lab loves to chew the 4 pk multicolored balls you can get at petsmart. He will retrieve them over and over again. We hit them to him with a golf club (less slimey). But he won't touch any other ball...no tennis ball, no foam ball, nothing but his balls. He's the funniest thing. He had a stomach virus last night so at 3 am my dh was up mopping the whole house and I was thanking my lucky stars we didn't have carpet anymore!!!

My dogs love
Brand NYLABONE they are very durable and they last forever. Believe me I have tried tons my lab is over 120 lbs so yes they chew up regular toys in no time. Get the hard ones and they also like the soft flavored but don't last as long.
This has been the best lasting for us. They look like this.

Wow, and I though mine was big (he is 100lbs) He seems like a horse!!! He reminds me of that show my girls watched years ago called Big Yellow Bear in the Little Blue House, (I think thats what it was called) I wanted to post a pic, but haven't figured out how yet!! He looks like the Big Yellow Bear though!!!
Thanks for that link!!! I have just discovered the Nylabone, for the power chewer, but I see that they are cheaper on their website!!! I paid $8 for them at our Walmart, it looks like they are 6 something on the nylabone website!! Thanks for that link!!

My Parents have two labs which, we grew up with labs, the two they have now Buddy and Tanner. Buddy is a silver lab and Tanner is a yellow, and for chews they both get marrow bones (soup bones). You can buy them at the grocery store and let them chew on them or buy them at Petsmart and they are filled with peanut butter/cheese instead of Marrow and dogs love to chew on them. They will go back to them over and over again.
Another new option is a product called Antlers, it is actually a Piece of Deer Antler and dogs love to chew on them and they last forever. Our labs have had them forever and haven't made a dent in them.
We own two puggles now who love marrow bones, please make sure if you buy them at the grocery store for your pups you don't cook them before giving them to the dogs because after cooking they become brittle and can break. It is perfectly healthy for them to have straight out of the package raw. Or if your not comfortable with that buy the ones at Petsmart/petco with other fillings.

Yep almost but the gentlest dog ever. If you want to post a picture use the paperclip next to the smiley and then it goes into your computer and you pick your picture ok.
I usually use a $2.00 coupon on the Nylabone there is a new one out google it. I would send you but cant find right now.. exp 12/31/09.

The only things our lab hasn't been able to chew up is a Kong and this "fluff ball" we bought at Food Lion - I also just bought one at Ralph's when on vacation in SanDiego - It seems to be just a big ball of strings.
Although not indestructible, I've had great luck at TJMaxx, Ross & Marshall's, finding rubber toy's for $2-$4 that last at least a couple months. Also, garage sales & thrift shops are great for stuffed animals for less than $0.50. I will never again buy a $7 duck that lasts all of 6 minutes!

I have chows, not labs but mine really like their nylabones, bully sticks, and homemade fleece braids.
I bought a bunch of fleece from the crafts store (like $3 worth and I still have more), cut it into strips, and braided the strips together. My two like to chew on it and they are actually quite strong. They also like to see how far they can pull the ends until it finally snaps. They did figure out that if they get it too wet, it snaps quicker which is no fun for them.
