Got the 4-1-1 from a local CVS store manager today. He said some e-mail came out about a promotion which he thought would kick in before the end of the month. The deal is the customer gets credit each time she makes a transaction and either provides her own shopping bag or refuses a bag (like just bought one item, don't need it) and for each 4 credits, a $1 Extra Care Buck is issued. He called it a Green Bag Tag and made it sound like it is issued to the customer but I could be wrong on that and it's just something the cashier scans.
I cannot say whether this is a test market thing, regional, or nationwide.
He told me because I bring in my own totes for bagging purchases all the time.

I took a cvs advisor survey about this a while back. Sounds like a really cool program and I hope its nationwide. I'll have to ask next time I'm there.

You will have to buy a tag for a dollar. Then each time you make a purchase ( limit once per day), it will accumulate a credit on your card. After 4 scans, an ECB will print out. You have to make a purchase, not just come in and get it scanned. The literature is specific on that .
Also , the tag will be card specific to the card that you purchased it with. It will not work on other cards.
This is set to start Nov 1st.

The manager was very clear to me that the credit would apply whether the customer uses a CVS green bag, provides their own or declines bagging their baggable purchase.

but you still need to have the tag that needs to be scanned. my store already has them up on the checkout on the magazine racks

CVS is going green! They have a new card called Green Bag Tag for sale in their stores. (Likely found by the registers. It should be on your store's truck this week) It retails for 99c. It includes a leaf shaped scannable card that attaches to your favorite reusable bag. Each time you visit CVS and bring your reusable bag, they will scan your Green Bag Tag. The 4th time they scan your tag, you will earn a $1 Extra Care Buck that will print on your receipt. Wow!
Fine print on the back of the display the tag was on states:
"To earn Extra bucks for a transaction in store, your Extra care card, green bag tag, and reusable bag must be presented w/ purchase at checkout. Limit of one green tag use/scan per day per household. Every 4th purchase your ECB will print at the bottom of your cash register receipt as a $1 coupon good for your next purchase. Extra bucks can be used until the exp. date shown on the coupon...."
How will this benefit you? Well if you only go to CVS once a week, you'll earn $13 a year just by bringing your bag! If you go 4 times a week, that's $52 in a year!
I am so excited about this promotion! A HUGE thanks to my friend Onemom2fourkids on AFC who emailed me this picture!

I guess they're figuring they'll make money off it because most people will forget to bring their bag. In fact, they'll probably at least break even on most people. I'll just use an ecb to pay for it.

This is awesome. You have been repped. I take my own bag everytime I go. Two of the cashiers have memorized the fact that I do bring my own bags. They leave the items on the counter for me to grab after they rung them up. I'll have to keep the tag in my purse or binder b/c I have more than one reusable bag. And I'm w/ a pp bout paying for it, but I guess ur first ECB pays for the tag. Way to go CVS. I hope mine has these.

The guidelines attached to the tag say the limit is one scan per household per day, so beyond that is between you and the store(s) you shop. It also says the promotion can end at any time, so we'll see if it stays around for a short or long time.
I broke down and bought mine today. The clerk stopped me right when I came in and started telling me about it because her manager (the one who told me about it initially) said to specially bring it to the attention of their special (bag toting) customers.

I'm not too thrilled over the one per day part of it.
I only shop about once per week and will make about three transactions then.
I am happy about it, though.

10-14-2009, 03:07:53 PM
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent! I will definitely purchase one of these. I understand Amys concern that you try to make only 1 trip there per week but may do multiple transactions so thats a bummer, but then again CVS figured if it was per transaction people would make sure they did more than one transaction per day and rack up on the extra bucks. Think about it, 4 transactions per day = $1 ECB X 7 days=$7 ECB X 52 weeks= $364 ECB per year per person for using your own bag. I could live with that but I don't think CVS could, lol. Would be a good idea though, hmmm, what can I buy with $364 ECB's!

I hope we do it, I have many bags, but never enough. Our church is selling a compactable one that goes in a little bag about 3 x 3 and slides closed. I have one on my key chain and one in my purse. I hate all the plastic bags.

Confirmed in my little town of 5,000 (Eureka, IL). I went in yesterday to burn some ECBs before they expire and the cashier told me all about the program & scan tag. She basically quoted the memo she was holding and it's everything that's already been posted about.
I smiled and nodded like I'd never heard about it, but after she was finished, I said, "yeah, I actually just heard about it online..."
Go Hot Coupon World!
This'll be a nice incentive. I already use reusable totes (got them FAR from Menards!) because they're stronger, hold more and it keeps the plastic bag count down in my house. I have some from occasional purchases, but I swear they breed under the kitchen sink...

You could at different stores, I guess, have more than one tag.
It specifically states one scan per HH per day, so at our store we will only do one scan for you no matter how many separate transactions with different cards.

CVS is not the first to reward you - I live in Richmond, VA and for years Ukrop's, a local grocery store, has given you a credit for reusing your brown grocery bags - before everyone had reuseable tote bags. They were actually the first ones in our area to offer reusable shopping bags. The Kroger stores in our area also offer a reward. Currently both Ukrop's and Kroger take 0.05 off your order for each bag you bring and use for your purchase. Ikea was also a leader in this concept. I don't have one near me, but they use to have (I don't know if they still do) a policy that if you wanted to bag your items in one of their plastic bags they charged you 0.05 per bag - or you could purchase (or bring your own) a reusable tote from them to avoid the fee. (Or just not use a bag at all)
Don't get me wrong - I think it is great to reward us with ECBs. That is a great incentive for me to remember to grab one out of the back of the car. Now I just have to figure out a way to keep up with another card. :)

Is the Kroger incentive regional. I'm in NC and they give u 10 extra points on ur store card for bringing ur own bags. Our Lowe's Foods gives u 10 pts per bag u bring in (even if u don't use all of them; or I just got lucky that day). Not sure if the same will happen at Lowe's now w/ the new reward program they have going on. Will have to ask if I ever shop there again.

Yes, NC Kroger is regional. Lived in NC before moving back to beloved TX. You guys get $ for spending $$, etc. Even your Kroger cards are different colors. Here DH was looked at like he was crazy when he asked for a new blue Kroger card :hysterical:
Now, I wonder if they will somehow link your CVS card with this green tag so that the ECB would work under a specific card with no beeps. If so, people who shop with multiple cards for multiple HH will be able to get more tags - one for each card...

This is a good point. If they are not linked to your card, you could use one at each store and they wouldn't know that it was the same person.
I suppose when the Extra Care card gets four "punches" with that UPC off the tag, then it will print the ECB.

It was only scanned once on each card and showed up the same way for both cards on the bottom of the receipt as:

Quantity Toward this Reward 1
Quantity Needed to Earn Reward 3
Does that make sense? Looks like all the tag bar codes are the same so you don't have to purchase multiple tags. HTH!

Now, why is it showing that the quantity toward the reward is just 1? If you scanned it twice, but on different days, you should have had the quantity of 2 based on the rules. Or does it take them 24-48 hours to process? Does not look like it, as the first use showed up immediately.
Moreover, when ECB prints, I wonder which card will be able to use it... Has anybody ever heard of ECB not belonging to a specific card? Ones that can be used under any card? Or will it be ECB for the card used last?

The best way to think about this to avoid confusion is to think of this bag tag as any other item that you would buy in the store. EVERYONEs bag tag has the SAME upc code. Just like all packs of Wrigley Spearmint gum all have the same upc code. As far as the cash register is concerned, when the cashier scans your bag tag, the cost is $0.00 and your ECB card that was scanned for this transaction is now credited to having "purchased" one bag refund. After the fourth bag refund is "purchased", you get an ECB -- just like all other ECB deals.
So think of it as any other ECB deal: "Buy" 4 bag-refunds for $0.00 and get a $1.00 ECB.
Therefore, you can use the same bag tag for ALL of your purchases on all of your multiple cards because there is nothing unique about the bar code on the bag tag. All of the bar codes on the bag tags are identical.

Yes it was scanned twice on different days. One scan on my card and one scan on DH's card so the quantity shows as 1 on each card.

Can you Buy a cheap gift card and still scan your bag tag - - and get credit? I think the cheapest amount you can put on it is $2 I think. ..
What about stamps -- not that I need any since I am still swimming in that deal from Walgreens - - -
Just a thought- - - so many CVSs nearby
Is it confirmed that all the green bag tags have the same UPC number on them? TIA

So we should think of it as you can have 1 scan per day per CVS account. You can use it twice if you scan 2 different CVS cards.

Did anyone see the news tonight? CVS is rolling out a plan to cut down on plastic bags. You have to buy one of their .99 reusable bags, and every four times you use it and don't get a plastic bag they'll credit your CVS card $1!! :BigHand::BigHand::BigHand: It says its rolling out to 7,000 stores over the next 3 weeks. Can't wait to try this one!!

Countrymom and Benz is right, it's the 99cent tag that everyone's been talking about. I FINALLY found one today, after 3 stores had no idea what I was talking about. You buy the 99cent green tag and they all have he same barcode, so you can use the one tag with whatever number of cards you have. I love this idea!! when I went to Target on Sunday, they gave me 5cent credit per bag. awesome idea!

Saw the leaf thing that costs .99 and every time you go to cvs you scan it and after 4 times you get 1ecb. I wonder if there is a limit to this thing. The manager scanned it when i bought it so my receipt shows green bag tag uses quantity toward this reward 1 quantity needed to earn reward. I could see making some ecb's this way if there's no limit.

I bought 4(I have many bags) on Sunday and didn't realize until I got home(again) that the dense cashier didn't scan it right then and there, even though I was using my own bag right then and there :(

Well, they are only supposed to scan it once per day. Not per trip through the register. As for limit... All I read was that the promo could end at any time.
And the other thing is that one tag can be used on ANY reusable bag. So unless it's a convenience thing I would only buy one tag and let those scans accumulate on the one tag, and get your rewards faster.

My point was that the cashier should have scanned it due to the fact that I used my own bag, not for just purchasing the tag.
I look at this as an extra bonus and will always use my own bags even if it does end.
My purpose of buying more than one is I won't have to search in vain for one particular bag, I will have multiple choices.

yes there is a thread about this here somewhere. from what I remember you have to buy a tag for $1. then when you go to cvs and buy anything and use a reusable bag have them scan the card. you can do it once per day, and the tag is linked to your card so no using one tag on multiple cards... use it 4 times and then you will get $1ECB

why not just attach it to your keyring right there with your cvs card instead of on the bag itself?

Sadly, after less than two weeks, the cord on my bag tag snapped in half today. I've been storing it in my CVS ECB portfolio, so it was never in danger of falling out somewhere. But I took it out to slip on my wrist, and it just snapped at the bend. Gotta find something elastic to do the same job.

Oh my gosh! You/they must be related to my husband. When we check out and only gets a couple of items, he tells them he doesn't need a bag, he's helping to "save a plastic tree".

While I was checking out today, I noticed on the counter, these "Green Tags" that you hook to your reusable shopping bag. For every 4th time its scanned you earn $1 ECB! It is in the shape of a leaf and would attach to your bag like a luggage tag. There must be a bar code on the back that is scanned every time you use your bag. The cost was just $.99.

I was using my own bags last night and the clerk showed me the green tag. I bought one and she scanned it so I already have one use credit. I think this is a great idea. I am forever forgetting to bring my bags into CVS (usually remember at the grocery) so hopefully this will help me. Anyone know if you can have say 2 or 3 tags? Assuming you are using that many bags in a transaction.

No, the tags are all the same--and it is only good for one use per day per customer.

I understand you can have the tag scanned for each CVS card you use or have. So you don't have to buy multiple tags. Barcode is on backside.
Can you confirm this? I bought one tag the other day and used it right there and then. Today I had my sister use it but when I looked at her receipt, I didn't see the "green bag tag use" at the bottom of her receipt.

Yes, I have one bag tag and 2 CVS cards and have been using it for the past week on both cards. It gives a count at the bottom of your receipt as to how many times it has been used on that card and how many you need for the EB.

I think the end date for the GBT is 12/31/09.
If you go to cvs.com, log in and look in the extra care section under "current balances" it lists how many times you have scanned your bag (it comes up as a $ amount, which is # of scans not ecb's earned). The end date for it is 12/31/09.

I bought one of the CVS reusable shopping bag tags which earn you an ECB after 4 uses. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether they work for any EC account...like if someone has two accounts, one for them and one for DH, can you scan the reusable bag tag when you make purchases on both accounts (at different times of course) or should you only use the tag for one account? I don't want to have red flags go up or anything so I will just use the bag tag on my personal card until I hear back from someone who knows! I don't want to have to keep separate shopping bag tags for each CVS card, that would be too much for my brain to handle.

Hi everyone,
Fairly new here but I haven't seen this posted yet. I was at CVS yesterday and on the register counter they had these tags that you could purchase for .99 cents (great filler!). You put them on your reusable bags (any brand/type reusable bag) and every time you bring them in they scan the tag and you will get 1 ECB every 4th visit.
If you got to CVS as much as I do, this could really add up nicely!
I hope this helps someone!

Look at your receipt:
It should show:
Green bag tag uses:
Quantity toward this reward #
Quantity need to earn reward #
Quantity toward this reward: this # should increase each time you have your tag scanned.

They should be hanging right by the register. If you don't see any ask the cashier for a "Green Bag Tag", the tag that rewards you for using a reuseable bag.

Based on previous threads here on Hotcoupon world people are saying YES! I was thinking that since I purchased it ($.99) on one card that it wouldn't recognize it on the other card. However, some people say it does work. Might as well try. Of course, 1 scan per household per day!

Then how does it know when you reach 4 what card to attach it to? Or do you need 4 scans per card? So if you use it twice on card A and twice on card B, you still wouldn't get your ECB until you use it four times all on one card. Does this make sense? :giggle2:

The latter part of your statement is correct. Its 4 scans PER CARD.
As a pp mentioned - Think of it as any other ECB item you would "buy" in CVS. If you have to buy 4 CoverGirl items to get a $10 ECB, you wold have to buy 4 on ONE card to get it. Buying 2 on Card A and 2 on Card B won't get you anything.
