Thank you so very much for the ad preview. I appreciate your efforts greatly. It looks like a ground sirloin week to me. I'll get the roasts that they have on sale and ask them to grind it for me. Learned that tip from a helpful poster. Most of the grocery budget will go there this week. Thanks again!

If you look at the Food Lion forum, you will see a preview for Food Lion that begins 10/14. At the very top front page is a sirloin roast on sale for 1.77/lb. You just pick one of those babies up and ring the little bell at the meat department. They will grind it for you at no charge. It's really good this way. Another poster got me started doing this and it really saves alot of money vs. buying ground round or ground chuck and I like the meat alot better. There's hardly any fat in it at all. I'm told that it is equivalent to 90/10. HTH, Necie

They will cut any way you want. I sometimes have steaks off large end, then maybe a roast, and then grind some of smallest end. Usually have smallest end ground as maybe a little fat or gristle there. Sometimes a couple roasts or all steaks except for small end or all ground. Depends on what I have in freezer. $1.77 is an excellent price!!!!!!!!!

I think I posted before about having the Meat dept. grind the sirloin for you.
I also have them cut some and run it through that "cuber" to turn it into cube steaks(you never get those for cheap) which I prepare with lots of sauteed onions and gravey(like liver and onions but NOT). I get some sliced into stir fry strips or soup chunks. Sometimes I freeze a roast for about an hour and slice it very thin on my meat slicer and make my own minute steaks.

Can you use this ground meat for hamburgers, or is it too dry for a good burger? Thanks!!
I have used it for hamburgers before but I usually oil my hands with olive oil when I'm making the patties. The meat is so low fat that sometimes the burgers can come out a little on the dry side.
Sorry I misled you guys in a previous post. The cut of meat I'm referring to and excited about it the "Whole Boneless Beef Sirloin" for 1.77/lb in my ad. The ad even states that it is good for ground sirloin and kabobs. Thanks to the OP (sorry I don't remember who you were) for this wonderful money-saving idea. I also appreciate the previous post suggesting that some of it be cubed (stew here we come) and asking them to slice and cube some of it (brilliant!). Anybody with any other ideas? I plan to get so much that my freezer will Moo when I open it :hysterical:

Thanks for the preview and all the ideas about the sirloin from the posters! What a fantastic way to save money!
I like getting those McCormicks steak montreal marinades and cube some sirolin, let it marinade, then grill on kabobs. So yummy!

Okay...I just bought a 10 lb sirlion and had it ground at FL. I seperated it into 1 pound Ziploc freezer bags and put them in the freezer...except for what is in the meatloaf in the over. How long are they good for in the freezer?
I am trying to decide if 10 pounds is enough. Thanks for the suggestion of having it ground...I can't believe I got such a good cut of meat for $1.77 per pound...

I believe they recommend 6 months for ground meats. I have kept it longer than that, I know.

:thanks7: I just have to say a GIANT THANK YOU to all of you who posted about the Whole sirloin tip that is on sale this week. I used to go to the commissary once a month to stock up on meat. It was always a HORRIBLE/STRESSFUL event. I never even checked ads for meat prices, thinking the commissary was the best price. After reading all the posts I realized just how much I could get for a better price without the overcrowded commissary where you ALWAYS get checked out by a cashier with attitude. I was able to get 9+ meals out of the sirloin I purchased. I had no idea they would cut it anyway you like. So, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I will not be shopping the commissary anymore!!!!!! How good of a deal is this ladies? Should I buy more or will a similiar deal come around in a month or 2...what has been your experience? I just got a freezer so don't have any back logged knowledge.

This is a pretty good deal. Ground Sirloin is like buying FL's 93% lean ground beef, but the flavor is going to be much better. If you think about it, you are having Sirloin steaks ground up. Steak burgers anyone?
As for waiting for another deal, next week FL will have gound chuck for $1.68lb. That's a little cheaper, but chuck has a 80/20 meat to fat ratio. And considering Sirloin is a much costlier cut of meat, I'd go with this deal...that's why we did. Only issue is that the smallest amount you can buy is going to be 10lb+...although our FL had it pre-ground in 4-5lb amounts. We had 2 $3 catalinas to burn, so we got 9lb+ for a little less than 10 quid.

It's being sold by the pound, so it should be fresh. I've never seen frozen meat sold by the pound.

I'm pretty sure these are fresh. Someone else may know 100%.
The tilipia fillets come in frozen, in individual fillets farm raised product of China in a ten pound box. They slack (thaw) them out as needed. Some customers prefer frozen because they can keep them longer. $2.99 is a great deal as they retail for $5.99 and are only on sale about 4 times a year. It is a mild fish, not a fishy tasting fish like tuna. This information comes directly from a meat/seafood assistant market manager (hubby)!

I've bought tilapia from Food Lion before. They come frozen in individual sealed packs. As needed, they would open each pack and put a few on a tray, wrap and sell. I would ask the meat dept. guy to leave them in the packs frozen. This way, I could thaw/bake only what I needed. FYI - many stores sell this in a 4 lb bag in the frozen seafood section. I was finding these on sale for $10 occasionally, so I started buying this way instead.

I went tonight and looked at the HUGE sirlion tip the smallest they had was 9lbs. I started to think it might be nice to have a roast...I can grind my own meat for the hamburger meat (because they had NONE preground) and the meat department wasn't open...but I look at that big honkin piece of meat and wonder how I would cut a roast out of that. I Guess I could always do beef chunks for beef stew too...it is just a big intimadating piece of meat!

I asked yesterday if I could do that because there was only 1 left in the store. They said they would rather give me a raincheck than have me bring the meat back. They had just gone through a big health department meeting about what should and shouldn't be allowed to come back in the store (as far as returns) and even though I was returning it, they would feel more comfortable with just giving me a raincheck. Good luck with yours!

I didn't read this until this morning. I went last night and couldn't find any cuts of the sirloin, and the butcher was closed, so I asked if they do rainchecks for meat and lo and behold, they do!! Learn something new every day! :giggle2:
