it's absolutely inappropriate for this site. Who do we contact about getting that taken off?

Now I am seeing IMVU and I have heard of that before but it looks like a girl holding up another girl getting ready to kiss her. It could be a boy but he looks like he has a bosom. I'm a little embarressed when someone see's my computer.

I agree. I am in no way oblivious to the ways of the world, but for goodness sake........I guess they are trying to put the HOT in HOTcouponworld.

I have also gotten lots of scummy little pop ups in the past 2 weeks. Any one else?

To the powers that be, could you please find a more suitable paying sponsor?

Wow!!! The 2 pics that popped up on my screen from this ad are like soft porn. I have left other sites for this type of stuff. Please tell me they will take it off of here. Totally inappropriate & offensive!

It has been reported to admin.
What she said.

Admin will take care of it as soon as they get the oppertunity to.

Admin does not pick the ads, and I'm sure they are completly (well, at least until the report was made) unaware of that one in paticular.

If you ever see anything inappropriate like that, please report it to us directly.

If you feel you can not wait for this ad to be fixed, there is an option for a no ads subscription. To access it, go in your user cp from the top left of your screen to paid subscriptions. It's a small yearly fee.

I've been getting more annoyed about the Ivony & IMVU for 2 days.
Just got the talking present one.
Thought it was my computer allowing these, but since several others are seeing it I guess it's not me.

Yeah I gotta say considering how "moral" this site is with regard to coupon usage..you'd think they'd filter the types of ads that can get through a little better...not something I want my kids walking in and seeing up on my computer!

bugface711

The ads run on a rotation and although the site ownwers are very specific that they want relevant, appropriate content, sometimes things get put into the rotation that should not.
The ads are one of the ways the site is able to be free for all of us. If ads in general bother you, you can get the no ad subscription like asweetheart said above.
If you see something that is not appropriate for the site, there are a few options. Use the contact us link or send a private message to our site owners queenofthehivemomof4 or hotcouponmama or send a pm to our admin SBP. They have now been informed of the issue with this ad.

For those of you who have been around long enough, I would hope you know that nothing innapropriate would be put on here on purpose.

I do pay for the no ad subscription and recommend it to everyone.

I don't like the Evony ad either. I've seen it somewhere else, but I don't remember where. I am glad to know, though, that others are seeing it so I know my computer hasn't been infiltrated by something.

Hey guys I am very sorry for any ads that have been displayed that are inappropriate.

We do not pick and choose most of the ads that are displayed on our site. We use a couple of ad networks and they automatically deliver ads based on the content of our site, also certain advertisers can bid their ads on our site via the ad network (google) and we do not get to approve them before they are shown. However we do have the ability to block the ads and I am trying to find these ads so that we can block them from the appropriate ad network. I have not seen any of these ads myself so am having a hard time finding out what they are.

If anyone can help me by sending me a private message that includes the link of the ad as well as the location on our site (top center, left side, bottom) that would be most helpfull.

Additionally if you ever see an ad that you think is inappropriate please use the contact us link found at the bottom of each and every page here at Hotcouponworld. That is the fastest way to bring something like this to our attention. Only one member contacted us this AM and I want to say thank you to her.

Heidi and Kristen,
As usual, you guys are the best! Thanks for replying, explaining and acting promptly. You could have easily just blown us off and said we should just get the paid subscription. This was handled in the great HCW way I've come to love and expect. Thank you for who you are and for having a safe site with integrity and high standards. Again, you are the best (and Julie!)!

I don't see the ad anymore and Smokey the Bear never looked so good!

Thanks guys for your patience. I think we have gotten them blocked now. We don't all see the same ads either I never saw any of the mentioned ads except for the talking box one. If you see something that is shady/too provocative or offensive PLEASE contact us and we will look into it. The ads keep HCW free for everyone but we sure don't want junk either.

I have no issue with the ads. But find it hard to believe that no one, of higher power, checking to see what the actual ads are. I'm surprised where they do and don't show up at.

???

Do you mean that you find it hard to believe that we don't check the ads?

For example on our google ad location...there is not like a list of all the ads that are running. That is not how google ads work. Other sites bid for that space on our site and we don't have any control over them except to block anything that we spot (or in this case our members spotted) that is not appropriate. Google delivers ads based on other things like locations, key words (ever notice that during the elections you would see Obama ads when you were reading a political hot under the collar thread?)

As far as where they do and don't show up at...perhaps you can elaborate.

I was just surprised that no one knows what ads are running. As I would assume yourself and Mods don't see any of the ads when they enter the site. That was pretty much it.

The explaination of how Google ads work was interesting. I always wondered about that.

I see ads, some of the mods see the ads. But some ads are different for different people. For example someone in the NW might see ads for Safeway on our site...

Not sure what the trigger was for the sexy ads but I never did see them myself. Like I said there is not a list that we can see what is running in our google spot.

thanks for letting us know that we can report ads that we feel are inappropriate. I wouldn't have reported it because I would have accepted it since I love this free site and thought that is the price I pay for it.

Just to echo what Heidi said, network ads just come on a feed to us. There are some we get to control - like some of the ones in the ad that runs horizontally across the top of the screen. We don't purposefully allow religious ads, political ads, or sex ads.

We get one line of code and then ads just stream in. When you see something you don't like, we also need the URL if it's a google ad so we can block it through a competitive ad filter tool that google gives us.

But unfortunately, like Heidi says, some of those ads come up via your location, and some based on interest. But otherwise, we'd never see everything that rotates through, but we're glad to do something about it if we know about it.

If you see something wonky, just hit the "contact us" and the emails come right to Heidi and I.

And then, if it's something we can easily block, it can take up to 4 hours for it to cycle out once we've updated the filter.

Thanks for being patient - we do want to make sure what you guys see is relevant and on topic for the site. If we wanted to have a porn forum, we certainly would have opened that instead of a coupon forum.

I would have reported it,but to tell you the truth, I know you guys work hard enough already. If I can't listen to the Killers for a day or two, so be it:hysterical:

I do appreciate you blocking that ad though as it scared the poop out of me the first time it started talking. I have about 8 windows open at any given time at work and had no clue where the crazy talking was coming from (I began to think it was in my head :whistle67:)

Not ALL mods block the ads, some of us are even too cheap for that :hysterical:

Hey, this looks like a good place to ask. I'm a cheapo, so I consider the ads to be the price I pay for being cheap (but thank you ever so much for getting rid of that talking gift!). However, I'm wondering if paying the subscription to ditch the ads would make page loading times significantly faster. I realize there are a lot of other resources going here (big site, database and all that), but at this time I can only really browse this site from one computer because the pages here load painfully slow on the other one with the slower connection, though that computer would be so much more convenient for me if I could use it for hcw. Do you guys think ditching the ads would make a significant difference? That might be worth it to me.

I noticed a slight differance with the speed. I've had the 'script since I found out it was available.

There is also an option in your user CP to chose how many posts you want to view per page. Unless I'm doing SP match-ups (and even then I forget to change it half the time) things seemed to load slightly faster for me with less posts per page.

Were I'm on here almost 24/7, I also like having no-ads cause there are less distractions when I'm reading/trying to do stuff.

Worth the $$ IMO. And considering how much HCW has saved me, I don't mind contributing a little $$ if needed to keep things going.

I thought I looked pretty good in that ad. I shaved all the hair off (even off my tail). I guess all those push ups are finally starting to pay off. I've got all of your attention. But, we can't see it on our computer, so I don't know what do you all think? Should I have put on more lipstick?

queenofthehivemomof5
10-06-2009, 04:17:07 PM
The site may load a bit faster without the ads. I don't know I don't block the ads myself and the site runs OK for me. A little slower when there a bunch of folks online at one time but not too bad.

I also make sure I am running the lastest versions of the browsers (Firefox is my fav. but I dabble in them all now from time to time)

To block the ads the fee is $10 for the year. I don't want to push it...but if you think it is something you would like to do feel free...

It only blocks the ads within the forum software parts of the site. It won't block the ads on the home page, articles, and certain extra webpages. But it will block them in the forums, blogs, social groups, coupon database, etc.

You could look at it from a different perspective. If everyone kept seeing those boobies hangin out they might remember to do their self breast exam or remember they needed to get their mammograms done. I mean it is Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Just a thought.

I wasn't bothered by it just thought it was odd for our site. Now that talking present thing scared the shrimp right outta me several times yesterday.

Thanks girls for taking care of that stuff so fast.

Yes !!!!!!!!

I did the subscription last year - it recently ran out & it only took me about an hour to renew it, lol. I have the same problem (slow connection) - and the pages took forever to load. With the ads gone, no problem. I would give it a try - it is worth the $10 annual fee.

to make the website load faster you can also go into your cp and turn off people siggys that will help a little also
