View Full Version : Meijer's Markdowns Going Down?

It used to be that meat getting close to it's expiration date was marked 50% off. A while ago...I'm talking several years. More recently, it's been marked down 40% off. Okay, not as good, but I'll take it. Well, have any of you noticed recently the change that's taken place at Meijer?! Now it's 20%!!! UGH!
I asked a worker in the meat department if they would further mark it down as it got closer to that day's end. He informed me that no, whatever they don't sell at 20% off they have to throw it. He said, "Yeah, I just threw out about $4,000 worth of food not even an hour ago. It makes me sick." Yeah - me too!
So tell me - is it just my Meijer that has changed their markdown policy, or is it company-wide? I can still get great deals on discounted produce (at select Meijer locations) but no longer meat. I really miss buying whole chickens 40% off! =(

I've noticed that as well. But they still mark down all cut deli meat and cooked chickens 50% off when the deli closes for the night. They bag and tag it all and put it up on the deli counter for whomever wants it. I get the chickens a lot because I shop late at night so it's $3 for a whole cooked chicken.
I don't understand why they aren't marking the meat down faster and with a better discount. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

Yep my (gaines twp) store I usually only see 20%--but a few months ago I hit the JACKPOT & got whole chickens for $1 ea--They were all marked like 20 cents a pound, but when I went to check out, they were listed on my reciept as "pastries" lol so I think someone made a huge mistake-anyway haven't seen any good meat deals since that time...every once & awhile I find 40%-I shop in the early mornings....

I think the reason that they are reducing the reduction (LOL) is that they don't want people to wait for the clearance to buy their meat. If everyone bought it only when it was discounted, they wouldn't make as much on their regular prices. So while it does seem wasteful to throw out products, they are trying to keep people buying the full price items.

I wish we even had discounts. I have NEVER seen marked down meat at the two Meijer stores I shop at.

I normally shop Sunday mornings and for the most part at least 2 times per month I would get meat marked at 40% off, for the last 2 or 3 months it is only 20%.

I've only seen 20% in Columbus OH stores the past month or so as well. I was wondering about this too. So when I want clearance lately I look at Kroger!

I'm going to have to check with my husband on this one. He shops with me, and when we get to a certain aisle, he moves over to the meat counter, and meets me in the next aisle. He checks for deals...but to be honest, he hasn't brought anything to the cart for weeks! So...I'm thinking we're at 20% too.

I have noticed the same thing, thought it was just a local thing. Sometimes the markdown is more that the sale price so why bother. I miss stocking up on meat. It seems that as the economy gets worst the sales are also worst, just when you need them.

It's Meijer's new policy to only mark meat down to 20% off. Believe me, the meat dept at my store (Polaris - Cols area) was not happy about the change. Thankfully, Kroger is right across the street.
