View Full Version : Acme changing their coupon policy?????

I just got back from my last trip of the week and had an interesting conversation with the checker. I was in the Woodbury, NJ store (so maybe Pookie/Jen can weigh in....)

She said Acme will be changing their coupon policy in the very near future. The number of like coupons you can use will be limited to a certain amount. And, it will all be linked to your Acme card, so you can't just do multiple transactions. The card will know and the coupons will not be accepted.

She said the company has been thinking about it for a while, but will push ahead. Part of the reason they are doing it is the "cart full of mayo shelf cleaners". I'm assuming she was referring to the Unilever/GM/etc deal a few weeks ago.

So, has anyone heard anything? This will stink if it is true!

That's what I was thinking!

She was a grumpy cashier, so I'm hoping she was just being grumpy...and wrong!

I doubt it, if so I guess I will have to remember all my old phone numbers plus add some new cell numbers :giggle2:

One of the cashiers at Woodbury a long while back told me something similar and even said "They are in fact in a meeting about it right now!!" I was like OK. I think at that time it was only limiting the amount of like coupons because she had said that some people come in with like 50 of the same coupons.
Anyway like I said this was a long while ago and I haven't seen any changes. I hope not as well it is one of the reasons I really <3 Acme!! Also I would think the store would be doing a booming business since they changed there coupon policy, why rock the boat by changing it again? They get reimbursed for all the coupons.

I haven't heard of it but I also haven't been scheduaed as a cashier in a while just one of the ones they bellow for to come up from when they have lines. Where you in Jackie's line, Karen's and I can't think of the other ladies name?? I haven't had any trouble recently. Heck in the past didn't someone here say they were trying to do something to the card so you wouldn't get the cat?? This would be nuts if they do this as eveyone would have a few cards! Heck I would be getting one for the kids, hubby and maybe even the cat!
I realy hope they don't change their coupon policy that and before I worked their the reason I started shopping their was their meat/produce and deals! Heck good meat and produce is important where I buy them but everything else is sale price/promotions and coupon policy.

Jen - Keep your ears open - LOL!

I'm not sure of her name, I looked at her tag, but forgot it the minute I looked. She is one of the older - but not old - ladies.

OK guys,
I went into Woodbury yesterday and got told the same stuff. I bought 5 Total cereals and used 5 total coupons. I got the thanks to the "I won't say what she said blank customers" and their 50 q's they were changing their policy to limit the amount of coupons you could use per shoppers card. The cashier was Connie. I tried to question her as to when this change was taking place and I got after the renovation. I also asked to how many they were limiting to and I got maybe 2. I kinda laughed and asked how we where going to be notified of this change and was told the circular would have all the updated info when the change took place.

So I brought my butt home and called corp. and asked about the impending changes. The gentleman I spoke to was not aware of any change but submitted my questions and now I get to wait to hear back from some one in the know!!:giggle2: He did say the he had never heard of them being able to track through your super card though so I will let you all know as soon as I get the call.

well Connie doesn't know a thing about what's going on at Acme regarding changing of policies. She just thinks she knows! I asked Chris figuring he would know as he's fulltime and runs front/selfcheckout and he never heard anything about it.
Will be interesting to hear what corp. says!

Connie is very jealous of couponers and she has intentionally jammed the catalina on one occassion by yanking the tape. I don't think her story holds any water!!!

I was thinking that maybe she was irritated about having to deal with coupons at the register. She is getting paid to work there and if she does not like coupons/couponers then that falls under the category of too bad!

I had heard something similar last week or the week before when the clearance stuff was on the way in... They didn't like customers getting stuff for free so limiting coupons... I guess an extra card for the kids and dogs are in need :dog77: ha ha....

Connie just hates people getting great deals. She tried to tell me that they changed the policy too and I asked her to call Ed, the head manager at the store so he could verify her info. She never did. She hit the lottery twice in one week. $30,000 and $2,000 about a year ago. You would think she would appreciate a good deal. If I have a problem with a cashier I just talk to Theresa, Manager of all cashiers.

A couple of stores in the Central Jersey area already have been limited the number of coupons for a while - Middlesex NJ for over a year. Milltown has had a sign limiting to 3 of any one coupons for a few months. So some of the stores are limiting already

When the $30 get $15 was going on on of the young girls was commenting on my $.11 total asking me to help her shop when she moves out Connie over hears this and comes over and starts ?? my coupons becouse they were the Spanish Ragu ones. I was ike you like my total I can show you how to do this. She just shut up. Heck I have given some of my coworkers my printables to do the deals to help them out and the same nite Irishsaver gave them icecream coupons. They still remember that!

NEWS!!

I just got off the phone with corp!! They called me back this morning in response to my inquiry on their coupon policy and any up coming changes. I was told as we already know of the policy in effect and that there is to be no change. He also said that there is no limit on the number of man. coupons you can double.
He will be calling the store in Woodbury and sending them a copy of the policy so the manager can go over the policy with his employees. He was very apologetic over the incident and said I would probably be getting a call from the store as well.

So there you have it, it looks like no change coming.
Also I read that some of you are experiencing the limit on coupons in some of your stores so you may want to call your selves and let the corp office know which stores because according to the gentleman I talked to that is not supposed to happen. He told me he was going to go over Acme coupon policy with the store so might be looking into.

One of my stores says they have a limit of 6 like coupons. There's another store where I don't believe they have a said limit, but have been told a few times I could only use a certain amount. Needless to say, Acme has no clue what they are doing!

Quick update, Ed Bond called me today from the Woodbury store, I didn't get the call till later and he was already gone for the day so he told my machine he would be trying to get me again tomorrow.
I will be sure to update after I speak to him.
I was kinda surprised he called, corp. said I might get a call from the store after they spoke with them but honestly I wasn't expecting a follow through.
So till tomorrow:)

Glad to hear this is not true. I have to travel to Bayonne (next town from me) to shop at Acme, so it is not a store I frequent alot. However, I love shopping there, and after reading these posts, I thought well, it'll be "hasta la vista, ACME"! Would love to know where this Connie person works. I'd go show up on her line with my nice neat stack of q's, just on principle!

Shoot, I'll drive from Philly just to go through her line. Snotty noisy kids and all. My 3 year old loves to do his own brand of shelf clearing while they are super-checking my coupons.

Honestly, what did she think she was going to accomplish? That you'd all just say "oh ok" and shop somewhere else?

My acme just started the whole tape/paper over the slot at sco.:rolleyes24: Noticed it today. I know I'm partly to blame:biggrin: but I don't do anything illegal or not specified.

The Acmes around here that do that (about half) have it more because coupons don't scan at SCO and it becomes a royal pain in the buttocks to tell everyone to cover the second barcode. In a couple of stores around here I just tell them I know how to scan them if they want to just push them through at their stand. Most of the time they gratefully agree.

Then there is the store that doesn't have the slot covered but once they see a coupon they come a runnin' to check them out. I guess they are bored or something.

~~Who,Me?~~

I've never had a problem with a coupon not scanning at sco. But lately with all the deals, I've been doing lots of back to back transactions and my final totals are frequently less than $1. So of course they have to override that. I think it has more to do with your latter scenario.

Hi!!
Not sure which store you are talking about here but the one in Mantua NJ just covered up their slots as well. When I innocently asked if it had to do with expired or what? I was told by a young guy in there that is often very helpful and could care less about how many q's or transactions I do (love him BTW) that it had to do with a theft problem in that particular store. I woman was scanning and putting in a q that either didn't match and also had some how gotten an employees over ride # and was overriding q's by her self.
Anyway that was the story I got:)

I can't imagine somebody using an employee number and then going into the special screen to input it. Is somebody really that desperate? I would think that would not go unnoticed at the store. Somebody is really asking for trouble. This goes beyond using coupons for wrong sizes, flavor etc, which could be an honest mistake. Once again a bad apple(s) ruin for others.

On a happy note, I was pleasantly surprised yesterday that the one attendant at the SCO station who usually makes things harder than they have to be and seems to over scrutinize coupons and what you are doing was very accommodating while I did 4 "soup" transactions yesterday. He's not too bad, but just enough to be a nuisance. Since the new coupons printed each time for the soup, I could go back and use them over and over along with the $5.00 catalina. He laughed when I said I could do this all day and when do I stop? He said that I can come back later in the week, as the sale lasts until Thur. I was surprised at his turnaround! It was very nice.

The manager Mantua told me the same story. There were 2 ladies working together and they had a coupon for a free product and deducted their whole shopping order of $24.50. No one knows how they got an override code. When they left the store, management stopped them in the parking lot and told them they had to re-ring all their groceries because there was some mistake. The women did end up paying. I would have called the police.

our acme has theirs covered, as does the shoprite i work for-many problems with the coupons being expired, dates cut off(which we do not get paid for those coupons) same family group, but not right items....our s/c people are supposed to check every coupon before taking them....and since they turn them in at the end of their shift, and get written up if expired etc, they really seem to be checking...

The scanner can't tell if the date is cut off. It just reads the barcodes which do not have the expiration dates included in them... yet.

Also, someone might be scanning a coupon for an item that they did purchase, but are sticking a different coupon in the machine. Since the machine doesn't know which piece of paper was put intot he collection bin, it just knows that something was. That's how the "wrong" coupons end up in the collection bin. While the person keeps the coupon that should have gone in the bin.

At my store we give all of our coupons to the attendant for approval before scanning them. (And yes, they do watch us when we do.) Or they do them at their terminal or they come over and scan them at the check out lane themselves.

It's just the old adage of a few rotten apples spoiling the whole barrel.

Really? 'Cause I've had expireds beep at me before.

I could be totally wrong (please correct me if I am someone) but I heard the second set of barcode is the one that has the expiration date and other data. Some stores can read them, some can not. At one Acme I can scan my coupons through easy. In another I have to cover the second set of barcode because it beeps as unrecognisable. So, in my little world, the second store's computer would miss an expired.

My only experiance was once having a coupon that was expired and it beeped. It was at a store that I don't have to cover the second bar code. Then again, if I accidently used a coupon past it's expiration at a store that doesn't read the second barcode- I wouldn't know it anyhow.

Anywho:)

I dont mind that my acme has the coupon slots covered as I am always using the proper coupons so I dont give it thought. Now what I DO mind is being treated like a freaking criminal when I do go in for a deal. Mind you I have been off the coupon, snag the deals wagon for awhile so its not like the store has even seen much of me. Yet I was in one closer to work... LOVE that store... and I am looking around for someone to hand the coupons to. A guy is checking someone else out and asks what I need and I tell him I just need someone to check the coupons. He waves his hand and tells me to go ahead. Then when I go to pay he just double checks the coupons quickly on the computer and approves it. AWESOME and fast. Then I go to my n*zi Acme store. I swear I will never go there again and I truely do mean that. I head to self check out because the place is MOBBED and they have not enough help so I head to self checkout. I give the lady my coupons and she scans.... it doubles... scans.. doubles... she then cancels everything! OMG I am pushing it on time so I ask her why she did that. Well then comes the witch manager telling me "Oh its you again... you cant get everything for nothing" Um..... thanks.. was just asking why she canceled the coupon. She then tells me its not supposed to double. I didnt know this and it did at the other store so I asked to see the coupon and... she wouldnt show me! OMG Well I am sick and need to get out of there. 10 mins later of scanning 8 coupons I am done. I am so irritated. I then do another transaction quickly with the waffles. I bought 10. Used 5 of the 100/2 coupons and then handed over 15 in cats. balance is zero.... WHOA back up the bus. I look at the manager and tell her..."seriously, It looks like i CAN get something for nothing, as you put it. I am not asking for the penny back just total me out and let me go" she goes to argue and I point out that she is arguing at the fact i paid them too much just because I didnt have to pay with cash etc. That shut her up and I finally left. The irony of it all..... if i had waited for the cashier to check me out.... all those coupons would have doubled.

I feel everyone else's pain. Since I do the deals every week, I always thought it was easier to use self checkout. However, a few of the Customer Service People (not actual managers) have been hovering over me no matter where I go as of late. So tonight I decided to just go to the cashier because it was not busy. Well, I buy 6 Select Harvest soups and 1 goldfish..use 3 $.50/2 and $5 cat. My total is $.46. After the cashier scans the coupons, a red shirt CS comes over and totally checks over everything (claiming that the cashier had a phone call)...then gives me my change and cats. When I go in again I am treated like a criminal. The same cashier tells me that the Select Harvest Soups in the microwavable bowls are not allowed (I show her the ad where they are actually pictured) and named so she starts the transaction. Again use same coupons and pay same amount. Proceed to go in 3rd time (I couldn't bring DH because DD was asleep), and red shirt woman stands over the entire time. When I again get my cat it looked like she was going to tear it up...but she says Oh my gosh..not another one. I tell the Assistant Manager on my way out that I did not like this treatment. I only used coupons the correct way and am being treated as a criminal. I really need to start going to the other 2 stores in the area but this one is right next to Shoprite, Target, etc. and is the closest but has some, well almost all employees that don't seem to like a person getting a good deal.

This woman is treating the check out process like a battle between a customer and a store or store employee. This behavior is from a manager???? It sounds like she has a chip on her shoulder. Her behavior and comments are out of line. No store employee should even think of talking to a customer that way. Couldn't a store employee be disciplined or fired for this disrespectful and rude behavior? You may not want to spend any more time on this, but perhaps a call to corporate is in order. Store employees have to be accountable for their terrible behavior. If enough people complain, things will improve. It seems that the corporate office takes these things seriously. We all have our ups and downs with stores/store employees, but if I was treated this way, I would be fuming!
I am usually easy going and do not get irritated easily. I try to give someone the benefit of the doubt, but this is too much.

Good for you, for speaking up. Again, with all of the competition these days, stores need to make sure that their employees are behaving appropriately. Yes, Acme cannot give the store away, but customers should not have to put up with this treatment when they are doing nothing wrong. There are times when store personnel becomes too overly suspicious over nothing. Stores should save this kind of treatment for somebody who is truly cheating or stealing.

She's at it again! I shopped tonight not even in Connie's line and got the whole "your the kinda custumers who drive us crazy with coupons!". I said well if it wasn't for us couponers this store wouldn't be doing much buisness. Ugg what is wrong with her!

Jen,

I was hoping that the heart attack would have softened her a bit! I will make sure I avoid her register!

I have had numerous similar treatments like this lately. (at other stores) I am finding that there seems to be an increase in bad behavior over the last few weeks or so. You almost feel like reporting these people. I have received out of line remarks, rude tones, and out and out fibs, over the use of coupons. If there is a pattern with this type of behavior, wouldn't the employees be disciplined? Perhaps the employees are not concerned about being disciplined? I guess the employees think it is just fine to treat customers poorly?

I would think they employees would be at least tallked to about their behavior. I know Connie has been talked to. And if I see a manager when I'm working I might tell them what she told me. I can't imagine what she's telling custumers if she's treating a coworker like this. No one needs to be treated like this.
Heck I am always telling people about this site! It realy has helped me through some tough financial times the last few years with out feeling like anything was missing from my life!

I just got off the phone with corporate. Complained about "1 transaction per day per customer" that i got 2 weeks ago at Lincroft Acme. A very nice lady told me that they are retraining all stores and that it is now the corporate policy. She did not mention about # of Qs or anything else, but this is certain. She also said that it does not prevent any one from coming once a day to buy what you need and she also refered to the shelf cleaners ("store owners with 300 inserts/coupons") as the reason for policy change.
very sad

Sounds like Connie is full of soup.

Hmmm... I wonder if she used coupons on that soup. :giggle2:

That is soooo hilarious! :hysterical:

I highly doubt this is true. It's very unsensible. It sounds more like the cashiers who insist that you can only use one cat, only get pot stickers based on after coupon totals, that your cat didn't print because you used coupons etc...misinformed or making it up...only on the phone from Acme's Corp. Customer Service.

If this was the case they would lose a lot of business. Imagine not being allowed to shop at Acme and buy your groceries and your moms seperately. Or buy WIC check items and also regular groceries. Or Food Stamp items, and diapers seperately. On and on it goes.

Anywho... we shall see.:whistle67:

I went ahead and called Corp to confirm what the nice lady told you and they found nothing in their system about any such policy. So they said it's not true..

Thanks for checking. It sounded really silly. How can somebody from corporate make such statements? It is ridiculous to get two completely different answers. I can just hear the competition stating: Shop at our stores (walmart, shop rite, giant, etc) as many times per day as you like, since ACME only lets you shop once per day.:hysterical:
