I need broadcloth for baby hats. Joann price is quite high and the online sites have high minimum purchases. Any ideas?

How do you feel about a trip to RI? There are 3 fabric mill outlets in the Pawtucket/N. Providence area. I'm sure there's some in Mass, but I don't know of any.

There's also a "chain" I've heard of called Rags something. And then there might be some kind of outlet in Maine. Unless you want to drive to Jersey, where I know of 2 outlets with the most incredible bargains! How many hats are you planning to make in order to make this trip worth your while?

If you live in or near a large city most have disount fabric houses try the yellow pages.

Otherwise I have found some good bargains on ebay. I once scored some Waverly home decorating fabric for $2.00 a yard on eBay, the stuff retails for like $17 a yard. The only fabric store we have here is Walmart... and I dont really sew. But I do some crafty type things from time to time and if nothing strikes my fancy at WM then I check ebay.

Thank you. I am making about 200 hats a month for a new business. If we are going to make any $ , we have to cut costs on materials. I will see if my partner is up to a road trip. I would be.

Jo Ann's is always sending emails with printable 40%off coupons. If you register on their site they also send you sales papers with coupons.

May not be good for this project, but- Sheets!
Sometimes at discount stores you can find sheet sets cheaper than fabric itself.
They're really just nice big squares of fabric!
Or curtains....or tablecloths.....

You really have to take gas into consideration. Also, like someone mentioned, you can get 40-50% off coupons from Joanns. Do a google & see if there is a printable online. If not, a little known secret is that JoAnns accepts competitors coupons. Michaels Arts & Crafts is considered a competitor, so use one of their coupons.

Hancock Fabrics (http://www.hancockfabrics.com)

I did a search by broadcloth and their prices are $1.79 - $1.99 per yard, and 35 colors to choose from. I think can order as little as 1 yard, and if you are a new customer signing up for their online newsletter, they'll give you a code for free shipping on your first order.

I was just going to suggest Hancock. We have one here, and it's the only place i buy fabric. They are by far the cheapest around, and they have a "40% off anything in the store" coupon in the paper almost every Sunday. They will also mail the coupons to you if you join their mailing list.

Don't know if you are still checking this thread but for anyone who is looking for fabric, go to your local upholstery shop. They always have leftover fabric from jobs. Most will either give it to you or sell it to you for almost nothing to get it out of their hair. They also have fabric squares from old sample books that make great picture frame backgrounds and other craft projects.
